Chapter 5 Desperate

Zachary looked at Joey with a frown. Why was she here in the first place? Dealing with this service role and the scrutiny involved was a stark difference from her life with the Gray family.

He couldn't resist a taunt. "If you can't humble yourself, don't try to serve others."

Joey felt a slight sting from his words. These two were experts at twisting the truth.

She pursed her lips and said politely, "Fine, we'll find someone else for you. Hopefully, you can get Chloe's contact and bring us more clients."

Joey left the fitting area and called in an assistant. "Don't mention my identity when you're in there."

Then, she added with a touch of malice, "Tell them Chloe is grieving her late husband and has no interest in designing."

Meet Chloe? In your dreams!

The assistant walked in just in time to hear Julia complaining to Zachary, "Look at her attitude. I adore this dress and just wanted Chloe's contact.

"But why is she being like this? The service quality of staff these days is so poor."

Zachary was already having a headache from Julia's complaints. He sighed. "Why are you arguing with an employee? I'll have someone find Chloe for you."

The assistant couldn't help but roll her eyes. She thought, "Chloe is right here in front of you. You offended her, and now you want to get in contact with Chloe ..."

She calmly relayed Joey's message, "I'm sorry, but Chloe is mourning the loss of her husband and doesn't want to meet clients."

Zachary's eyelid twitched. "Well, then, let's wait." What a pity that she was recently widowed.

After all the hassle with Zachary, Joey was far from feeling tired. She called Selena.

"I made 7.18 million today. Come over, let's celebrate." Selena immediately guessed that she had sold the wedding dress.

The divorce was final, so selling it wasn't a problem. She asked curiously, "Who on earth would spend such a fortune?"

Joey sighed. "It was Zachary. I sold it to him for Julia."

Selena's voice raised in surprise, "You sold it to him?"

Joey's eyes teared up, and she blinked back the tears. "Well, it covers our expenses for almost a year."

She had spent three years designing a wedding dress just for someone else to have it. The 7.18 million dollars coincidentally matched their wedding date, July 18th, but Zachary probably had long forgotten it.

That evening, Joey had quite a few drinks. Being her loyal friend, Selena drank even more and ended up sprawled out on the floor. Joey hailed a taxi to drop Selena off at her place.

As she was about to return to the store, she suddenly remembered that Zachary hadn't seen the divorce agreement yet. She had to go back to fetch it and send it to him. She changed her route and headed to the apartment they had shared for three years.

The taxi stopped in front of the apartment building. Joey paid the fare and stumbled inside. As she entered, a strong force pushed her against the door, and Zachary's domineering kiss followed.

Joey's head felt heavy, and the familiar scent and warmth overwhelmed her, almost making her want to cry. If this were a few days ago, his enthusiasm might have made her ecstatic. But now, after witnessing him accompanying Julia to try on wedding dresses in the afternoon, all the heat had faded.

She pushed him away, wiping her mouth disdainfully. "Isn't Julia enough for you? You're so desperate!" Zachary had just returned and hadn't even changed out of his well-fitted suit.

His stern gaze was fixed on her. "And what about you? You talked about divorce, but rushed over here in the middle of the night. Can't handle the single life?"

Joey could sense the contempt in his words. She tightened her fist that hung by her side and retorted, "I might not have made as much money as when I was with you, but the single life isn't unbearable."

She walked past him and turned on the lights in the living room. She picked up the divorce agreement from the coffee table and handed it to him in one swift movement. "I came back to get this. Since you're here, I guess it'll save me a trip tomorrow."
