I am standing outside, my phone pressed against my ear and my eyes scanning both sides of the road, when suddenly, he bumps into me, hard and fast.
The phone flies from my hand and lands on the ground in a clatter. The first thing I feel is anger, surging through every fragment of my being. I raise my eyes from my broken phone, my lips about to say the vilest words I can think of.
But when my eyes come in contact with a piercing sea of blue, staring down at me with concern etched into his features, I suddenly forget what I was going to say.
He narrows his gaze at me and leans in closer slowly. I take in his scent of cedarwood and earth, raw and masculine. My body jerks away, and my feet follow. Before I reach the ground, strong arms catch me, holding on to my shoulders.
“Breathe,” he murmurs, his eyes still on mine. “I’ve got you.”
I’ve got you. Those words sound so familiar. And the way he says it. It nudges softly at my brain, as if trying to bring to the fore something I’ve forgotten.
“I’m fine,” I blurt harshly. It burns where he touches me, like sparks of electricity running down my spine. He lets go when I find my feet again, my eyes returning to my phone.
“Why do you sound angry?”
"Angry?" I scoff disbelievingly. "I just got that phone last month, and now, it is on the ground, broken, because you decided not to look where you are headed."
He seems taken aback, his head tilting as he regards me. "Hey kid, weren't you taught not to be rude to strangers?"
"What?" My mouth hangs open. "Kid? I will let you know that I am a college student, okay? And on the dean's honor list as well.”
His lips raise in a smirk. “Kid.”
"Stop it!" I glare at him, but the amusement on his face only stretches wider. "Call me that one more time and I'll…."
“Scarlett, did you find….”
My brother stops at the steps of the diner, staring at the scene playing before him. And then, suddenly, he bursts out laughing.
“What did you do, Scar?”
My eyes widen in disbelief. Is my brother going to take his side over mine?
“Nothing, Spencer! I did nothing! This stranger bumped into me, broke my phone, and then turned around to blame me for it," I huff, folding my arms in front of me. "And he called me a kid, too."
“You are a kid,” the stranger says, amusement etched on his features. “The last time I saw you, you were barely twelve.”
And then he narrows his eyes. “How old are you now?”
I look at my brother and then back at the stranger standing in front of me. And then, suddenly, I made the connection. My cheeks go red at once, and embarrassment washes through me.
“Oh my God!”
Spencer laughs, the sound ringing in the air as he comes closer to us. “You could have been nicer to her, Ares,” he says, nudging him playfully on his shoulders. “You used to be close.”
Mumbling something incoherent, I rush back into the diner and head to our table, humiliation burning me.

Dinner with my brother, Spencer, Olivia, his girlfriend, and Ares gets awkward by the minute. At least to me. Both friends get on with conversations they haven't had in a while, their voices mingling in the air and reverberating around the space.
But all through it, Ares' eyes never leave mine.
“I think we can have the toast now,” Spencer says, wrapping a hand around Olivia’s shoulders. I can see how proud he is of her through the shine in his eyes.
Olivia has been working so hard for a promotion in her company for the past year, and Spencer has been working up about it as well. But now that it is here, they can both relax and celebrate.
"Not yet," Ares murmurs. “Can we wait…”
Just then, the door swings open in the distance, and a whiff of vanilla scent teases my nostrils. Her pretty eyes scan the room before landing on us. I notice the tense look on Ares' face as she waltzes over.
"Hello, everyone," she says in a false high-pitched voice that makes me almost cringe. And without waiting for a response, she glues herself next to Ares, her beautiful blonde hair whipping in his face. I wait for the apology that should follow. The dinner was supposed to start two hours ago.
But nothing else pours from her lips.
"Hi," Olivia chirps, always the peacemaker. "I don't think we've met before."
“Bianca,” she says sweetly, stretching her hand for a shake. “Ares’ fiancée.”
Oh. Right.
Her gaze travels down to me. “And you are?”
“Scarlett,” Ares mutters, his tenor striking a strange cord in me. “Spencer’s younger sister. She just got in from college.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Scarlett,” she says, leaning into her seat. And then, she whips out her phone, burying her nose into it.
Ares nudges her gently. “Olivia…”
“Hmm?”
“We were waiting for you all evening.”
She looks up. "Give me a minute, please. This is really important."
And then, she returns to her phone, giggling about something. Olivia's face drops, as if her night has just been ruined, and Spencer looks like he has just been thrown into an awkward situation.
My chair scrapes the ground noisily as I push it backwards, getting on my feet. Three pairs of eyes turn to stare at me.
“I have to use the bathroom,” I mutter, walking away from the group.
I take my time in there, washing my hands and staring at my reflection, wondering how on earth I didn't recognize Ares, the man I had a crush on for more than half my life.
Sighing, I turn around to head out when suddenly, the door opens and Ares strides in. I freeze as the door clicks shut behind him. His eyes wash through my features under the dim lights.
“You shouldn’t be here,” I whisper, my pulse strangely racing.
He takes a slow step closer. “Funny. I was about to say the same thing.”
Scarlett's POVLater, I find myself alone in the breakroom, rinsing out my coffee mug with more aggression than necessary. I sense him before I hear him, his cologne over powering my senses as his presence commands the spacious room.“Still mad?” he says, leaning against the counter lazily, he gestures at a scone, his fingers outstretched like a greedy child asking for candy.“Still arrogant?” I shoot back, drying off my hands as I pick up the scone, deciding if I should bite into it or hand it to him.He chuckles, and it does that thing to my chest I hate.“You’re good,” he says simply.I glance at him. “So are you. That’s the problem.”He collects the scone from my hand, chuckling, “You think I’m testing you…right?”I narrow my eyes, “Aren’t you?”“I’m challenging you,” he says. “There’s a difference. You don’t strike me as someone who wants to be handled softly.”I blink, stunned by the way his voice drops on the word “softly.”I mask it with a scoff. “Is that how you justify being
Scarlett’s POVI furrowed my brows in confusion, unconsciously rubbing the spot he had gripped me.The crisp navy blue of his suit disappeared as he rounded the corner, the air in the room suddenly becoming lighter. What exactly was his problem?I scratched my head absentmindedly, a fake cough breaking me out of my reverie. The guard awkwardly scratched his head, his other hand holding the steel doors open for me.I gasped softly, red creeping up my cheeks as I offered him a small smile. The elevator dinged again, the doors sliding open to reveal another floor.I craned my neck, admiring the architecture of this place. The floors were lined with polished hardwood, the floors so clear, the bulbs above reflected their light. The cream colored walls were lined with paintings and certificates, big redwood doors lining the winding corridor. The guard gestured for me to keep walking, his brown eyes sparkling under the passage lights. We rounded a corner, winding steps coming into view as he
Scarlett's POVI groan softly, turning in bed as streaks of gold tease my sleep ridden eyes, sneaking in through the blinds.I sit up slowly, staring at the neon green digits on my alarm clock which told me if I didn't get up now, I'd end up being late.Hopping out of bed, I ran my fingers through my tangled hair, stifling a yawn as I headed to the bathroom.I really was going to be working with my childhood crush.Against all better judgement, I let the butterflies in my stomach fester, let the crimson creep up my cheeks.Ares. My brother's best friend. My brother's best friend who was…engaged.Like water dousing a fire, platinum blonde locs flashed through my mind, her high pitched voice mocking me in my own mind, icy blue eyes staring at me menacingly. Scarlett’s POVI spend the rest of the day with Roman, but we do not go back to his apartment. Instead, after breakfast, we go to the movies to see a new DC production, then circle back to another restaurant for lunch, and then a little karaoke.Settled in a park and watching nature all around us as the sun sets, I turn to face him.“Paws Real Estate is good for you,” I murmur, trying to be diplomatic about it. “But they are also rivals of the Hawthorne Group.”“Hawthorn….your brother’s company?” He raises his eyes in genuine surprise."Didn't I mention it before? The CEO of Paws has been doing all he can to bring my brother down. He has been intercepting his deals, ruining mergers for him, and even going as far as spreading rumors. If Spencer hears ….”“I can search for another placement,” Roman says at once, shaking his head. “If I had any clue about this, I wouldn’t have even applied. I feel so terrible right now.”“No, Roman,” I chuckle. “You don’t have to feel some way about it.
Scarlett’s POVThe following morning, I got a call from my best friend in college, Roman, asking us to meet. I jumped excitedly at the message because I was so worried that the only people I’ll have around to hang out with were my boyfriend and his girlfriend.Ares is obviously out of the question. But now that Roman is in town, I feel so much better.Having a quick bath, I shrug into my favorite pair of jeans, along with a black tank top, a pair of Nike sneakers, and a baseball cap. When I saunter into the living room, I meet Spencer knotting his tie, a slice of toast in his mouth. His gaze drops on mine. “Where are you going?”“Roman is in town,” I reply, grabbing an apple from the table. “You remember Roman, right?”They’ve never met before, but because they are the most important people in my life, I tend to talk about them to each other a lot.A muscle works in Spencer’s jaw. “I don’t know him.”“Spencer…”“Scar, you have to be careful, okay? Nothing is as it seems these days, an
Scarlett’s POV“Ares,” I whisper, torn between pleading and pushing him off. But if I plead, what exactly will I be begging for?The knocking on the door gets louder, more insistent. But Ares' contact doesn't falter. His face is inches away from mine, the heat that has swirled around us all evening entrapping us both. I feel drowsy suddenly, the need for my eyes to flutter closed getting stronger.“You think you know what you’re doing?” His voice is barely a growl. “You don’t, Scar. If I touch you, if I let this go one step further, it won’t stop. And then, what do I tell him? What should I tell them?”Them. My brother. His best friend, who trusts him more than anyone in the world. And Bianca, his fiancée. I am rudely reminded of that fact again, and it slices through me.But the heat doesn’t waver, because even now, even with all the reasons listed, Ares still doesn’t let go.Another loud knock. A risky thought crosses my mind. “Maybe you don’t tell him.”For a split second, it feels
