MELANIE

I turned my phone back off the second I saw Reynold’s message. I couldn’t deal with his shit right now. Eva was probably going crazy trying to reach me, but I also wasn’t ready to face her disappointment or the lecture I knew was coming.

I showered quickly, letting the hot water hit my skin, then dried off and crawled naked under the covers. I just wanted to sleep—to forget everything.

But the second my eyes closed, my mind betrayed me.

It was on the one person I desperately didn't want

MELANIEWhat the hell was Cassandra doing with my father in a place like this?I stood frozen behind a cluster of flowering bushes, my heart pounding against my ribs as I watched them. They were sitting on a secluded bench in the quiet part of the garden, you know, the kind of spot couples went to for privacy. My father was leaning in close, gently brushing a strand of hair away from Cassandra’s face with a tenderness I had never seen from him before, definitely not with me, or with anyone else.Cassandra tilted her head slightly, smiling up at him in a way that made my stomach turn. They looked… intimate. Too fucking intimate.I felt a sudden knot twisting in my stomach.“Are you about to have a new stepmother?” Reynold whispered from behind me, clearly amused by the whole thing.I couldn’t bring myself to laugh. The situation felt so weird that my throat tightened, and a sick feeling spread through my chest. “That’s Gavin’s fiancée,” I said to him, my voice barely audible, trying

MELANIE“You’ve been avoiding me.”I stopped halfway down the stairs at the sound of my father’s voice behind me, and turned slowly to meet his cold, judgmental grey eyes.“Why shouldn’t I?” I challenged him.“I don’t know why you don’t get it, Mel,” he said, sounding exhausted. “I’m doing all this for you.”“Yeah, more like for yourself,” I shot back.He shook his head. “When I win this election—”“If.”“What?”“I was just correcting you,” I said innocently. “If you win the election, not when. You’re not God, Dad. You don’t control the future.”His face hardened. “I don’t know what to do with you anymore.”“Just leave me the fuck alone,” I muttered, continuing down the stairs.I had never seen anyone play the role of a victim like he did. Fucking pathetic. He followed me down the stairs and I groaned inwardly. “Where are you going dressed like that?” he asked, eyeing my bum shorts and tank top.“Dressed like what?” I flared my arms. “I’m wearing normal clothes. What’s wrong with it?

GAVINMy nails dug deep into my palms as I paced back and forth across my office. I could already feel the sting where my nails had injured the skin on my palm, but I didn’t care. I welcomed the pain because it was something I could focus on, compared to the anger I felt inside.I had never felt this powerless in my entire life.Six fucking years.Six years of my life poured into this case; all the sacrifices, lies, isolation, and now it has come down to this? Using her? Turning the one person who actually made me… feel something into a goddamn asset?I slammed my fist into my desk so hard the entire table shook with a loud crack that echoed around the room just as my office door opened.“Whoa… whoa, Gavin!” Joe rushed in, eyes wide. “What the hell are you doing? Are you trying to break your hand?”He hovered near me, obviously scared to touch me in case I swung at him next.I shut my eyes and tried to control my breathing, but it came out fast and harsh. My heart was pounding so hard

GAVIN“We need eyes and ears everywhere at Dalton Wealth’s campaign kickoff party,” I announced, standing at the front of the briefing room.Seven seasoned field agents sat around the long table, watching me intently as I laid out the plan for the high-profile event happening in one week.“This is our best shot,” I continued, gripping the edge of the podium. “The Rossis are almost certain to attend. We cannot afford a single mistake. So observe everything—who they talk to, what they say, any signals. This could finally give us the break we’ve been waiting for.”A few agents nodded. Everyone definitely understood what this meant and how critical it was. “Kline, Walker, and Ramirez, you three will be with me inside. You need to dress appropriately, blend in perfectly, and keep your covers airtight. We observe, we listen, and we document. No playing hero. Understood?”“Yes, sir,” they replied in unison. The door suddenly opened, and a junior agent poked his head in. “Agent Thorne, the D

MELANIEI scrambled up from the pavement like there was fire on my ass, my heart racing as I wet my swollen lips with my tongue. Derek rose beside me, breathing hard, one hand awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck like he didn’t know what to do with himself.“Can someone tell me what the hell is going on here?” Dalton growled through gritted teeth, glaring from me to Derek and back again. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you, Melanie, and I found you out here… doing this?”“Dad,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady even though my pulse was racing, “Meet my friend, Derek.”Derek stepped forward politely. “Good evening, Mr. Wealth.”My father completely ignored the greeting. His eyes narrowed on his face in recognition. “Isn’t this the clumsy server who caused that scene inside?”I rolled my eyes at him. “He's Eva's brother, and it wasn’t his fault. Reynold was the one who—”“Enough!” Dalton snapped, cutting me off. “Get back inside. Now!”I stared at him like he had suddenly gone

MELANIEThe night air brushed against my skin the second I stepped outside. It was cooler than I expected, sending goosebumps all over my body, making me shiver. I gathered the hem of my dress in one hand and walked faster across the manicured lawn, my heels sinking slightly into the grass as I scanned the area for Derek. He couldn’t have gone too far so soon.I finally spotted him sitting by the side of the building, away from the bright lights and noise of the party. He was alone, his head tilted back, staring up at the stars, completely lost in thought.I approached him quietly, careful not to trip in these ridiculous heels and fall on my face. “I didn’t know you were an astrophile,” I teased him.Derek jerked his head toward me, obviously not expecting anyone. When he saw it was me, his face softened into that warm smile that always made my chest feel a little lighter.“Mel… what are you doing out here?” he asked, sounding genuinely happy to see me.“I saw you leave,” I said, gat
