“Margaret, I didn’t see you there,” I say with what I hope appears as a smile. “Charles said you sent him out on some errand. I have never seen him so in love before." "We are very happy. I'm a lucky woman." "Are you coming? You must,” she tugs at my hand. “To the garden?” She knits her eyebrows. “Yes. Are you sure you are okay?” “Sorry, perhaps later. I’m going out for a walk.” I manage a smile. Her shoulders sag. “Should I join you?” “I won’t go far. I just need to clear my head. Wedding nerves.” I dart out of the house without waiting for her response, wanting to get out before more nosy coven members appear and convince me to stay, or worse, offer to join me on my walk. When I've ensured that Margaret has left, I get my car, and I go back to the bedroom to get my 'food.' I lead them out, my body feeling a little exhausted as I use what's left of my energy to try to listen for any sounds of approaching vampires. I haven't hunted in days since I arrived here to visit Charles Du Pont and his family. "I'm going to enjoy my food outside. In the forest." I smile at the guards, and they nod in response. We get in the car, and I discover that Charles' victims are tourists who are visiting LA. I give them money and hypnotize them to forget about vampires and to never set foot in San Bernardino Forest before dropping them off in Los Angeles. I mindlessly drive to nowhere, thinking about how angry Charles is going to be. I park my car at Kings Canyon, and I run between the trees, the swooshing sound making me feel free. I pause when I suddenly feel a presence that makes my skin crawl. I prepare to turn around and go back. That’s when I come face-to-face with it, the large black wolf. I run with as much speed as I can master, and he follows, his growls getting nearer. I suddenly find myself lying on the ground on my belly, his paw resting on my back, and I know better than to move or think about getting up. I lie still, waiting for his next action. He is probably sending mink links to his warriors as I lie on the ground. The wolf shifts into a human and places his foot on my back. “What do you want in our territory?” He growls. “I was... I was running. I wasn’t aware that I had invaded your territory. I thought that this territory was unclaimed.” “Well, we just bought it. Princess Esther Carnegie, is it? I’ve seen you from a distance at some of these meetings, and I was told that you are a dangerous spy.” “So, are you going to kill me?” I ask. “I thought vampires were already dead. I don’t see any crime in getting rid of one of you, mosquitoes.” “Mosquitoes?” I growl. “You are fast, you suck blood, you are nuisances, but you are hot, I have to admit that.” I feel his foot on my back getting weaker as he goes on and on about how much of a nuisance vampires are. I roll over as quickly as possible, and I stand on my feet. The moment I move, he is fast enough to shift at the same time that when I’m standing on my feet, I come face to face with his wolf again. He snarls at me, his hazel eyes raging, and we maintain eye contact, both ready to attack. We end up moving in a circle until I feel the presence of more wolves, and decide to make a run for it. He chases me, and we jump between canyons and rivers. The wolf's claw tore at my back. I turn around, raging, and ready to attack. Another whitish grey wolf suddenly appears, its growls loud and dangerous. It passes me, its eyes focused on the black wolf. After five minutes, I hear the faint and slow footsteps of the wolf as it comes back. I scrunch up my nose to get a whiff of his scent, but I find it different and hypnotizing. I slowly get up, hoping to run if I can. The new wolf turns back to his human form, making it difficult to look away. “Are you okay?” he asks, his face marred with concern. “Just a little wound, which will close in a moment.” He nods and walks towards me, his hand reaching out. "You know what I am, right?" I eye him suspiciously. "I guess. Why are you reminding me?" "Because you seem a little too comfortable. Werewolves never relax around us, they hate us, and every time we meet, we secretly want to be at each other’s throats." He chuckles. "Your hand, please." He stands in front of me, his body sculptured like a work of art. I shamelessly gawk at him, my low beating vampire heart rate going up as if it’s a human heart. “You are naked, and you are distracting me,” I point out.EstherI'm sitting in the center of my bed, my arms around my knees, and I can't stop crying. I’m trying to think of a reason I feel this way. There’s this emptiness in me that I can’t explain, but I shrug it off as the loss of my family that I’m experiencing. It has been over 300 years, but this is new to me since I just woke up.I sigh at the irritating sound of the knock on the window. I already know who it is through the scent. When I finally open, Dominic gracefully throws himself into the room.“I’m back,” he grins.“My heart is overflowing with joy,” I glare at him.“I know,” he beams, and it transforms his face. I look away to try to get rid of the mental image, to remind myself that I’m married.“What are you doing here? You might get caught.”“You care about me?” He places a hand on his chest in mock surprise.“No,” I roll my eyes. “What do you want?”“My wolf thought we should see our mate. The least you could do is say hi.”“Leave.”“Okay,” he nods.I eye him expectantly,
Jane “Jane, what was that?” Dominic's tone is gentle but firm. “I don’t trust them. Okay? If by some miracle you and Esther ended up together…” “Given the way you hate me these days," he interjects. "I’m surprised that you were rooting for us when we were human.” I glare at him for his dramatic words. “You know how realistic I am, Dominic, and when we were human, the chances of our family accepting your relationship with Esther were pretty low, but I knew that it was possible for you two to be happy together. Right now it's different…” “How is it different right now?” “Do you think that if you two were together, the werewolves, witches and warlocks would jump with joy? You are a hybrid, Dominic, and Esther is a vampire. The werewolves can’t let you two rule. It will be like letting vampires take over.” “I can let all that go if she wants to be with me,” he protests. “I never wanted to be a Lycan king, anyway.” “Do you think they would let you? They might kill her to…” “I almo
Esther“Uncle,” I look from Uncle Felix to Louis, guilt gnawing at me. “I couldn’t do it.” I shake my head.“Not this again,” Uncle Felix mumbles under his breath.“Again?” I ask, confused.“Yes, again!” He snaps. “You do this every damn time! What was your reason for not rejecting him this time around?”“I, I just couldn’t do it.”“I can’t do this,” he says, getting up and pacing the room, pinching the bridge of his nose. “I can’t deal with any of it. I wish I were the one who had died so that your parents would be the ones to deal with this mess. Being responsible for someone as selfish as you is tiring.”“I will reject him.” I don’t care about the desperation in my voice. It’s hard to see my uncle’s opinion of me changing and him losing his trust in me. “I just need a little time and patience...”“I’ve been patient long enough,” he hits the table. Louis and I get out of the way in time. We watch the table crumble, causing the dishes and plates to scatter on the floor, some of them
HildaWe decided to stay in a hotel in London to avoid letting other pack members get attacked by Felix’s army. We are all silent and pacing back and forth in the living room of the penthouse when the elevator doors open and Alpha Dominic walks out of the elevator, his face marred with a look I cannot describe. “Dominic!” Jane rushes to his side. “Goodness! You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”“I might as well have.” He looks down at her. I’ve never seen Alpha Dominic like this before. It almost scares me. He looks broken and helpless. “You saw her,” Jane says. “I met her,” Alpha Dominic nods. “We are too late.”“We will find it,” Valerie says to him. He doesn’t reply. Instead, he sinks into the couch and glances at Aiden, who is sitting on another couch. Aiden’s eyes drop.“Don’t feel guilty, Aiden,” Alpha Dominic says gently. “I shouldn’t have left her,” Aiden says in a low voice. “I was supposed to protect...”“They would’ve killed you!” Alpha Dominic interjects. “I’m glad that
EstherI’m the one who stands on my tiptoes, and I wrap my arms around his neck. He kisses me back, but then I pull away. This feels wrong, even as I try to justify it by saying to myself that I’m doing this to distract him and weaken his defences. “I’m sorry,” he says. “No, I’m the one who kissed you first.”He puts his arms around my shoulders, holding me and kissing the top of my head. I don’t make any effort to move away. He is the first to let go. Then, he places his index finger under my chin and looks into my eyes. “What are you doing?” I try to snarl at him, but it comes out as a whisper. “Looking at you.” His eyes are dark, and there’s no smile on his lips. I have to kill him before it’s too late. He might be putting a spell on me through his beautiful eyes. I kiss him hungrily. He kisses me back, his hands on my waist, and I place my hands on his chest, ready to use this opportunity to get it over with. He doesn’t seem to mind, he pulls me closer. I have no idea how my
Esther“What do you think?” I snap. “I think you won’t succeed,” he vibrates behind me with a chuckle.“Let me go so that we can see if you are telling the truth.”“If you want me to let go, you have to promise to leave with me.”“You want to kill me.”“No,” he sighs. “If I kill you, I die.”I try to think of where and when I heard these words. I know I heard them somewhere, but I forgot where. “These words sound familiar.”“Because they are familiar,” he drawls. “Let me guess, we were together in a past life and you said those words?”“Something like that,” he chuckles. “This isn’t funny. I don’t know what I did to deserve you as a mate. You are one person I really hate.”I feel him stiffen, but he doesn’t say a word. “Please let me go.” I feel the energy of witches, warlocks and werewolves in this room, as if they are not far away. The room looks like a hotel room, and the white curtains are closed. “Where are we anyway?”“We are in a room in the forest. When they found out you
