Esther
“Margaret, I didn’t see you there,” I say with what I hope appears as a smile. “Charles said you sent him out on some errand. I have never seen him so in love before." "We are very happy." "Are you coming? You must.” She tugs at my hand. “To the garden?” She knits her eyebrows. “Yes. Are you sure you are okay?” “Sorry, perhaps later. I’m going out for a walk.” I manage a smile. Her shoulders sag. “Should I join you?” “I won’t go far, I just need to clear my head. Wedding nerves.” I dart out of the house without waiting for her response, wanting to get out before more nosy coven members appear and convince me to stay, or worse offer to join me on my walk. When I've ensured that Margaret has left, I get my car, and I go back to the bedroom, to get my 'food.' I lead them out, my body feeling a little exhausted as I try to listen for any sounds of approaching vampires. "I'm going to enjoy my food outside. In the forest." I smile at the guards and they nod in response. We get in the car, and I discover that Charles' victims are tourists who are visiting LA. I give them money and hypnotize them to forget about vampires and to never set foot at San Bernardino Forest, before dropping them off at Los Angeles. I mindlessly drive to nowhere, thinking about how mad Charles is going to be. I park my car at Kings Canyon, and I run between the trees, the swooshing sound making me feel free. I pause when I suddenly feel a presence that makes my skin crawl. I prepare to turn around and go back. That’s when I come face to face with it, the large black wolf. I run with as much speed as I can master, and he follows, his growls getting nearer. I suddenly find myself lying on the ground on my belly, his paw resting on my back, and I know better than to move or think about getting up. I lie still, waiting for his next action. He is probably sending mink links to his warriors as I lay on the ground. The wolf shifts into a human and places his foot on my back. “What do you want in our territory?” He growls. “I was...I was running. I wasn’t aware that I have invaded your territory.” “Well, we just bought it. Princess Esther Carnegie, is it? I’ve seen you from a distance at some of these meetings and I was told that you are a dangerous spy.” “So, are you going to kill me?” I ask. “I thought vampires were already dead. I don’t see any crime in getting rid of one of you, mosquitoes.” “Mosquitoes?” I growl. “You are fast, you suck blood, you are nuisances, but you are hot, I have to admit that.” I feel his foot on my back getting weaker as he goes on and on about how much of a nuisance vampires are. I roll over as quickly as possible and I stand on my feet. The moment I move, he is fast enough to shift at the same time that when I’m standing on my feet, I come face to face with his wolf again. He snarls at me, his hazel eyes raging, and we maintain eye contact, both ready to attack. We end up moving in a circle until I decide to make the run for it. He chases me, and we jump between canyons and rivers and I feel more tired. Another whitish grey wolf suddenly appears, its growls loud and dangerous. It passes me, its eyes focused on the black wolf. After five minutes, I hear the faint and slow footsteps of the wolf as it comes back. I scrunch up my nose to try to get his scent, but I find it different and hypnotizing. I slowly to get up, hoping to run if I can but the new wolf turns back to his human form. “Are you okay?” He asks, his face marred with concern. “Just a little wound, which will close in a moment.” He nods and walks towards me, his hand reaching out. "You know what I am. Right?" I eye him suspiciously. "I guess. Why are you reminding me?" "Because you seem way too relaxed. Werewolves never relax around us, they hate us, and every time we meet, we secretly want to be at each other’s throats." He chuckles. "Your hand, please." He stands in front of me, his body sculptured like a work of art. I shamelessly gawk at him, my low beating vampire heart rate going up as if it’s a human heart. “You are naked, and you are distracting me.” I point out.Esther“You have no right to control my life,” I say between my teeth, anger rising in me. “I think I have every right,” he says calmly. “All vampires are my responsibility, and it’s my job to protect them from the likes of creatures like Dominic, and you are the only one with the ability to help. You are going to help me.”“What did Dominic do?”“He is trying to control us!” he snaps. “I can’t believe that he is a half vampire. An information that you and your family hid from me.”“I didn’t know.”“But you knew that she was your mate,” he glances at me, his face blank. “I found out recently.”“So, what did you do when you found out? You decided to abandon your duties?” he scowls. I feel ice under my skin, and not the kind that makes me happy.I roll out of the moving car and close the door before King Bernard can make sense of what is happening. I run, quickening my pace when I hear a screeching of tires in the distance, and then, the sound of movement that I know too well, the so
Esther “Let me go,” I say between my teeth. “I’m afraid I can’t, princess,” Charles says, a little amused. “It’s either you go with him or me,” he turns around. I’m still in his arms, Felix is running towards us, and I’m grateful that we are in a city, so he can’t run at a vamp speed. A car stops next to us, and Charles motions for me to get in, a wide grin on his face. “I can’t leave Jane,” I shake my head. “Jane will be fine, I spoke to Logan.” ‘Jane?’ I try to reach her. ‘I’m okay. I’m hiding. Where are you?’ she asks. ‘I’m with Charles.’ ‘What? We can’t trust Charles...’ ‘I’m going to kill you! You, throne thief!’ Felix is only two blocks away, his eyes blazing with something I can’t explain. Something I’ve never seen before. I jump in the car, and Charles follows. As the car drives off, and I look back, watching Felix, who is standing on a sidewalk, his fists clenched. “If you are taking me away to kill me, I will kill you first.” I turn to face Charles, who s
Esther I stiffen, but Uncle Felix doesn’t let go of me, even when I’m not hugging him back. “I was really worried about you,” Uncle Felix says in a low voice, although everyone can hear him. I feel rage bubbling inside me, and the more I try to hold it in, the more I feel like I’m going to explode. “You!” I push him away. Slamming him against the wall. “You monster!” I scream. My father watches this with a frown on his face, but he doesn’t try to stop me. “What did I do?” Uncle Felix blinks innocently. “I understand that pregnancy hormones might be making you lose your temper, but...” “I hate you!” I punch him on the lip. “What are you doing, Esther?” My father roars. “When I wanted to disown her, you told me that I shouldn’t do that to my own daughter,” he says to Felix. “Look at what she is doing. After everything you’ve done for her, and I told you to stop treating her like an egg!” “Let me talk to her brother,” Felix says to my father. Then, he turns and faces me.
Esther“Why are we going to the hospital?” Josh asks me, his sudden change in attitude making me feel more suspicious. “To help out with surgery,” I reply. “But the blood...” he trails off. “You are a vampire.”“I can handle my cravings. It’s like working at a restaurant. You handle the food but you don’t eat them. Right?”“So, we are food to you?” Aiden chuckles. “Of course,” I roll my eyes playfully. “What do you think?”“I’m very scared,” Aiden grins. “I’m so ashamed of myself,” Josh says. “I’m really sorry, Princess Esther.”“There’s nothing to apologize for,” I smile politely. “Where’s Hilda?”“She’s at the hospital. She said she was going to check on you later.”I nod, giving him another polite smile. “So, how do you know about surgery?” Josh asks. “I was bored and ran out of things to study. I mean, if you’ve lived for as many years as I did...”“Makes sense,” he nods. “I don’t like this, Josh,” Aiden chimes in. “Princess Esther is my friend. You can’t just take her away
Esther “I’m so sorry,” I whisper to Dominic. “This must’ve been very hard for you. The werewolves and witches are like your children.” “They are,” he nods. “Which is why you can’t just leave them. You should let me go...” “No!” he interjects. “There’s no way in hell I’m ever going to let you...” “But you agreed.” “I didn’t want to argue. Yet.” “And now you do,” I roll my eyes. “I’ll try to make you see my reasons.” “Don’t, please,” I plead. “If you leave with me, you will not be happy, and you’ll always worry about the witches and werewolves. I told you that I don’t want you to blame me for changing your life.” “I lived without you. For 300 years,” he says in a hoarse voice. “Do you know how difficult that was? I had to stay away and watch you from a distance.” “Please don’t do this, Dominic. Not right now.” “But I want to protect you. I want to take care of you,” he protests. “But I can protect...” “I want to do it anyway! You can’t tell me that you don’t feel the way o
Esther The man in front of him fidgets. He looks like he wouldn’t mind if the ground swallowed him whole, in fact, he would appreciate it. Dominic’s eyes are on him, his face blank, but his jaw is tight. “Well, Alpha, you, you see...” he stammers. “The werewolves who are on your side think it would be best if the baby,” he clears his throat. Dominic’s eyes are still on him, the tension in the air palpable. “It would be best if the baby weren’t alive,” the man flushes when he says the words. “The baby will confuse things. We need to always draw the line, Alpha, you know that. We don't even know if he or she is going to be a vampire or a lycan.”“So, you want to kill my child?” Dominic asks, his voice dangerously calm. “That’s, that’s not what I meant,” he swallows, avoiding eye contact. “And I am a half vampire,” Dominic reminds him."But we have always known you as a lycan. You have always been on the werewolves side."“Like I said, anyone who wants to get anywhere near her,”
