Flashback (1665)

“Esther, please,” Edmund holds my wrist.

“I’m serious. I’ll be okay here. You can go.”

“You really want me to leave you here?” His voice is hoarse.

“Yes, Edmund.” I look up and place a hand on his cheek. “Look, perhaps in the next life, things will be easier, and we’ll be together if we are meant to be.”

“What if there’s no next life?”

“Then, it’s okay. I think we have loved each other so much. I’ll cherish that while still alive. The love that you gave me is enough.”

“You have pulled me out of a dark place.” He cocks his head to kiss my palm on his cheek. “But that is not why I love you. I love everything about you.” He holds my hands and puts his forehead against mine.

“I know.” I close my eyes, letting myself enjoy his warm touch for the last time. “Let me stay here, please.”
