Athena
The young boy gave me a nasty look as he spoke with urgency.
“I haven't seen this face around here…” The young man was immediately interrupted by who I just knew was a Shaman, “Tell the Alpha the enemies are stronger than we are but he can proceed if he believes in miracles. I'll be here if he needs my physical presence. Hurry now.”
“But the Alpha…”
“Do as I say, Charles. You may leave now”
The boy dashed out of the room after what seemed like a minute of confusion. My mind raced in panic as I heard about the presence of the Alpha. There was nothing that could convince me from thinking that it wasn't finally over. But did it have to be on my birthday? My whole body was shivering from the thought until the Shaman spoke, “you shouldn't be here, young man. Today's training is about to begin.”
I was caught between running away or telling the shaman the truth. But, what if the Alpha caught me on my way out? What would become of me? What if the Shaman hands me over to the Alpha himself. I stood there like a piece of dead bone afraid to be cracked by ferocious canines. I took the most irrational decision and confronted the Shaman who seemed to be deep in his meditation. “I want to train with you today” I replied boldly, swallowing the lump of fear settling in my throat. “I need your help. I want to be the strongest f…” I immediately corrected myself “…warrior in town. Please teach me yourself” I pleaded in the most convincing tone of a male while I touched the curved arms of the Shaman in order to force him to open up his eyes. Then I heard the growl behind me. One I was familiar with. We made a brief eye contact before he called out, “There's a thin line between pride and power, Shaman. I sent for you and you refused. What justification do you have for that?“ the Alpha growled. This was the first I'll ever confront the Alpha.
“Get lost,” the Alpha turned to me. Without a second thought, I dashed out of their presence. The growling of the alpha faded behind me as I ran past the corridor from which I came. The day was getting brighter over the expensively furnished structure. There was a synchronous chant from one of the doors. One should think I should be scared for my life, but I had the guts to wait. There was a large stage of young men about my age but they looked a lot bigger. My eyes watered in admiration. I was tempted to go in when I remembered how much I had trespassed.
“How was the visit?“ My mother asked as I returned home feeling half alive.
“I want to join the warriors. I want to train like the boys,” I persisted while my mother continued with the dishes.
“I was afraid this would happen. Let me have the tag.“
There was no point protesting. I handed it over to her and asked, “ why did you bother to give me if I was never going to use it?“
“It was a temporary gift, Athena. I only wanted you to have a look. Nothing More. That place is out of bound for us”
“But my father is now the Alpha's advisor. Why can't I become a gamma like him? Why do I remain an omega!“ I lost my voice on my mother.
She threw a sorrowful glance at me and shook her head. There was more to it, I could tell. “Get back to your room. You're not ripe for this conversation”
I slammed my door so loud and slumped on my bed. Who was I kidding to think my birthday would be any better than the previous.

“Do you mind telling me the occasion?“ My mother asked over dinner. It was few days after I turned fifteen. I smiled meekly as I rushed my meal and headed back to my room without a reply. My father has been busy with warrior duties ever since he assumed position but he came home sometimes. I didn't care less, since I was beginning to fulfil my dreams. The only two things that bothered me was my mother's constant swollen face from his hit and the day I would get caught. Somehow, I never forgot that.
“What happened to your hair, Athena?“ my mother squeaked the next day. I had forgotten to wear my head warmer. She had no idea I cut my hair to look exactly like a boy. I smacked my head in disappoinment as I scuffed.
“If the moon goddess wouldn't make me a boy, why can't I look like one at least” I snapped back as I rushed my breakfast.
“How long have you been sneaking out?“ She asked as though she had already caught me. I tried my very best to conceal my flights.
“Since you introduced me to it I couldn't take my mind off it,” I replied her without a a second look.
“Now that's the height of it young lady, “ she raged then she squinted squarly on my left palm, then I knew I'd given myself away. I was holding the tag.
She snatched the card from my hands and scolded, “why! Do you know how much danger you're in?“
“I don't care, mum” I reached out for the metal card that has my brother's name on it and took it back in my possession while I dashed out of the house. Without it, I couldn't gain entry into the school. It didn't matter if my mother knew. She would hide me from my father, I told myself as I headed for the school.
“You're late today,” the Shaman commented as I arrived at the training ground.
“I was avoiding danger as usual,” I replied breathlessly as I took my position amongst the group of boys around me. I was in level 3 and the shaman always complimented my speed and sustainace.
“There's a little change in today's training” the Shaman announced as we took our positions in the large training class. I tried to adjust my training suit to cover my already developing breasts. I was growing faster than I could imagine. Puberty was knocking. The other features that might have given me away was my hair, but I had it cut every two weeks.
“A new opponent would be joining us. Each of you would have to contend with him if you desire a promotion,” he continued as I stood eagerly, already anticipating my next victory. I was amongst the top students in level 3.
“The Alpha…” he announced, dramatically. Immediately, we made eye contact.
“The aim of today's training…” he continued, pacing slowly among the groups, passing through the rows between the queues as my mind raced. Only the Shaman knew of my identity. No one else knew I was a female.
“…is to test your defense. No one is expected to conquer the Alpha, of course. Whoever wins is assured a direct promotion to level six and a chance to be recruited into the Alpha's warriors. Head down to the forest ground, the Alpha is waiting.“
Everyone marched along but my limbs were glued to the spot. When half of the crowd had left I ran towards the Shaman and asked in a fearful whisper, “what do I do? The Alpha might find out about me”
“I warned you three years ago but you insisted on changing the world. What else do you want me to do? I gave you a chance to back out, I'm offering you another chance now” he remarked coldly without turning to look at me as he joined the troop marching out of the room.
“I need your help. Pair me with someone else” I pleaded.
“It's mandatory that every to-be warrior confronts the Alpha. There's nothing I can do, Styles,” he concluded and left. I had two options; to quit or to face the Alpha.
AthenaThe troop briskly dissolved while I paced, holding on to my hair like I wanted to yank them out. I couldn't let three years of hard training go to waste. It was the time I was waiting for yet I felt scared for my life. The time to prove the Alpha wrong about us—the feminine gender. We were stronger than what they thought us to be if we were given the chance. But, I was scared of being a scapegoat. A laughing stock. Worst of it all, what if he passes a death sentence? “Are you scared of getting your ass kicked, Styles?” One of the best at my level, Scott, scorned me as he approached the exit. It was pointless to respond to him but I was in a tense state and whatever he said made me angrier with myself. Although, he hated me for being one of his strongest contenders.“Of course not. I'm scared of no one, including the Alpha,” I replied angrily, telling that to myself rather than the nuisance in front of me. He laughed like a snoring pig. I guess that was the right amount of mot
AthenaAlthough I hadn't met him, I knew he would be just as heartless as the Alpha. I limped out of the school's premises hating my legs and the terrible pain in my abdomen. A random reptile crossed my path. It ran over my worn-out shoes. What a mistake it made. I crushed its head with my heels, stamping my feet aggressively until it was impossible to recognize its form as a once colorful spiky lizard. Countless times my mother had thought I needed a therapist after killing a stray cat the last summer. No one accepted the fact that it ate my pet fish, Goldie—the only loyal friend I ever had. How could I let that slide? I turned to continue my journey home, leaving the dead carcass for the swarm of flies settling on its bruised body. I strode down the almost deserted streets. It was one of those days I enjoyed the bliss of freedom and what it felt like to be part of a learning institute, though unwelcomed. I should be sorry for the Alpha's potential loss of his only son, but I wasn't.
Athena “What’s the whole noise about?” he roared. I paused, still facing the white wooden walls that were oozing out termite eggs on the floor due my impact as the voice probed behind me. I gulped down my dry throat. The sight of my mother’s pain had clouded my reasoning. “What is that thing you’re wearing?” he asked with his usual monotone. I could feel every sound of his footsteps as the aura in the room intensified, but I stood still without the slightest attempt to face him. My heart raced, ceaselessly as I remembered his last warning. I looked down at my training suit and realized how screwed I was.“Are you deaf? Where did you get that!” he roared behind me. At this point, I was beginning to tremble but I fixed my gaze on the three-year old me smiling at me from a picture frame sitting on the shelf in front of me. I smiled back at my younger self and turned to face my father, I mean, Mr. Styles. I retained the smile on my face as I looked into his eyes. All my aim was to make
(an omega curse)Athena I blinked rapidly unable to fathom what was before me. The girl that responded to me earlier left my side as soon as a hefty-looking man approached me. His chest was bare. The only clothing on him was the hide of a leopard around his waist, such that a flimsy view of his muscular lap was exposed. The beards on his face were so much that his mouth was almost invisible.“When did you arrive?” the husky voice inquired. I used to think my father had the scariest voice but I was proven wrong right on the spot. I began a tireless palpitation as I struggled to crawl away from him, moving on my already-bruised elbows. Sporadic coughing flew out of my mouth in replacement for an answer to his question. He pulled me by my hair towards what seemed like a thatched house in the midst of forest ground. The chaotic noise diminished as we approached the onlookers—a large group of young females and a scanty number of males. All looking unkempt and scrawny. I could tell I was t
AthenaI ran into one of the scrawny-looking souls scattered at the front of the building. Surprisingly, he was a male. “Watch where you’re going,” he protested as some others grumbled from the impact as I unintentionally made a few of them trip.“Who are you?”“she’s one of us now,” the fat woman responded for me as I pulled myself back to my feet.“In that case, you need a change of clothing. You cannot hunt dressed as a clown. The man who seemed to be the leader stepped close to me as the crowd surrounding me dispersed. I saw a heap of old clothing drop before me. They were faded camouflage trousers and a bralette.“Hurry up,” the man commanded as I picked up the piece of cloth that looked like my perfect fit. Maybe this was a chance to finally get to learn the martial arts without having to hide, I said to myself, as my new outfit resembled the ones used by the warriors, except that they looked old. I crawled until I got to my feet. I searched around for a place to change when th
AthenaWe retired back to the omega’s quarters, which had soon become a home I was not ready to accept. We all marched along in our numbers into the thatched house. I didn’t acknowledge the massiveness of the house until that night. There was a large hall behind the masters’ lodge. Old rusty bunks with tattered beds were scattered all over the place. It was like a heap of organized mess, with a stench of rotten food hanging painfully in the air. Everyone slumped onto his or her bed. I looked out for an empty space for myself. Luckily, I found one at the extreme corner, close to the only tiny window in the room. It was no surprise that everyone took off their clothes immediately after they got in—there was only one source of ventilation. I was still fully dressed, still in shock that such a place harbored living beings. It looked exactly like an abandoned store room for unused household items. I slumped on the bed, as my body wanted. I sneezed for a minute stretch before I could adjust
Athena“Who else knows about this?” I whispered eagerly, looking around to be sure there were no eavesdroppers around.“Just you and I, for now.”“What do you mean for now?” I asked desperately, already losing my cool. Her smile was sickening. “Answer me,” I urged.“I don’t know either, but I’m sure they will never find out soon if…” she looked around her before leaning forward. I could feel the warmth from her mouth as she whispered hurriedly,“…if you help me.”She lost me at that point. It was as though there was more she wasn’t saying. Something I had to find out soon.“Follow me,” she said. At first, I felt infuriated to be ordered around by a small girl, but I was ready to let go of my pride. The unknown can be too scary to be left to chance. I followed her out of the thatched house. We headed towards the back, very close to the blacksmith that made the nametag.“I know how to get us out of here and we both need our help.”“What on earth are you talking about?” I questioned alre
AthenaI had to stop. It felt like I was reliving my nightmare. The same cry. I looked around in search of the young girl until I heard the cry again. I was convinced she was the one. She needed me. I ran back towards her. Not because I felt strong enough to overcome the attacker but because I wanted to do something different. I always ran from the scream in my dreams. I chose to face it. I didn't consider the fact that I could lose my life in the process. She was laying helplessly on the ground when I found her. The attacker didn't stop hitting her even as he pulled her towards the route where we came. She seemed too weak to defend herself from the slightest hit. It was clear that he was one of the guards. I pounced on him with all the strength I could muster and yelled at the top of my voice,“Run and don't look back!” He wasn't in his wolf form but his human form was hefty and strong— just the right size to snap my bones into pieces. I sustained several injuries until I fell weak.
