Chapter 4

作者: Reneemoon
I forced my eyes open.

The first thing I saw was a hospital ceiling.

Vincenzo sat beside me. He grabbed my hand, relief filling his voice.

"Vivian, you're finally awake.

"Thank God the doctor says it's just scrapes and bruises. I was worried sick."

I met his red-eyed gaze and said nothing.

He looked away, his voice low and unsure.

"I'm sorry. It all happened so fast. I instinctively shielded whoever was closest. I was careless..."

Careless.

I shoved his hand away.

As he stared at me in shock, I pushed myself up to get out of bed.

But one sentence from him stopped me cold.

"Vivian, the nurse just ran some tests. You're pregnant.

"I know you're angry, but I'm going to make it up to you and the baby!"

I didn't hear a word he said after that.

Only one thought kept circling through my mind.

I'm pregnant.

For seven years, I'd wished for a baby more times than I could count.

But the fire had done serious damage to my body. The doctors said I was too weak to carry a pregnancy safely.

And Vincenzo, worried about my health, kept putting off trying.

Now, just as I was getting ready to disappear for good, I found out I was pregnant.

Vincenzo was about to say something else when his phone rang.

The second he picked up, Julia's tearful voice spilled out of the speaker.

"Don, what do I do... The doctor says my leg's going to scar."

Vincenzo's face tightened. He glanced at me and lowered his voice.

"Don't be scared. I'll be right there."

He hung up and gave me an apologetic look.

"Vivian, I ordered your favorite soup. One of my men will bring it over soon.

"Something urgent just came up. Be good and finish it, okay? I'll come see you tonight."

He tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear, then turned and picked up his jacket.

I watched him go and felt a sudden urge to laugh.

If this baby comes into the world and has to grow up watching this, will my child really be happy?

The thought had barely crossed my mind when a tearing pain ripped through my lower stomach.

With shaking fingers, I pressed the call button by the bed.

A nurse rushed in. When she saw the blood spreading beneath me, her eyes widened.

"She's hemorrhaging! She was already at risk of a miscarriage, and now she's showing signs of one! Get her to the OR, now!

"Where's her husband? I told him she couldn't be left alone. She's in critical condition. Page the on-call OB and prep the OR!"

Another nurse hurried in, her voice low and helpless.

"Mr. Moretti is in the private suite next door. We tried to notify him, but his guards turned us away. They said the Don ordered that no one disturb him. This hospital belongs to his family—no one here dares defy him."

His suit was hopelessly wrinkled, his hair a mess, his eyes sunken. He looked hollowed out.I looked at him, and I felt strangely calm.I tucked the blanket around Lorenzo. He gave me an encouraging look, and I left the room.I stopped in front of Vincenzo."Did you see that?" I said. "When disaster struck, he shielded me. You didn't."Vincenzo swallowed hard."So what do you feel for me? Is it love, obsession, or the need to own me?" I looked into his eyes. "Someone who would never leave you finally did, and now you can't stand it."His lips parted, but nothing came out."Leave us alone."Vincenzo stood there for a long, long time. He'd only meant to scare them.Jealousy had coiled around his gut like a snake. She'd moved into that man's house, called him her fiancé, and laughed so easily right in front of him.He couldn't stand it.He'd only wanted to frighten her, to make her understand that she couldn't just leave him.At most, he'd meant to scorch the living room and scare the kid

In the firelight, his bloodshot eyes looked raw. Then he turned his head. When he saw me, he went rigid, his lips trembling. The next second, he rushed toward me."Thank God you're okay..."The words were barely out of his mouth when I slapped him across the face.Smack! The crack split the night, louder than the timber snapping inside the burning house. His head jerked to the side. A thread of blood appeared on his lip, and my hand left a pale streak in the soot on his cheek. He turned back toward me. Half his face was swelling before my eyes.He just looked at me. He didn't flinch away."If anything happens to Lorenzo," I said, meeting his eyes, my voice cold, "I will kill you."When the firefighters carried Lorenzo out, most of his shirt had burned away. His back and arms were an angry red.The skin had peeled back and was still oozing blood. His eyes were closed, his lips pale. When they lifted him into the ambulance, I climbed in after him and held his hand. His fingertips were st

I was stunned.Carmen exchanged a look with a few of the kids, smiled, and quietly led them away. The door eased shut.It was just the two of us in the hallway."Vivian," he said softly. "I noticed you as soon as you arrived."Now I think I know why you always seemed so withdrawn."I blinked."That man acts devoted, but he doesn't really know you. He doesn't respect what you want, either, does he?"You lived like that for so long. That's why, when I asked you what you liked, you just froze."He paused, his eyes on my face."But when you smile, you're beautiful. It makes me think you must have really shone once, before something dimmed your light."Whether I'm asking you to marry me or just trying to be your friend," he said with a self-deprecating laugh, looking down, "maybe I'm just being selfish. It's okay if you say no. But please let me stay and keep looking out for you."I was quiet for a long time. Then I smiled."Okay."Over the next few days, Vincenzo followed me to and from wo

Vincenzo froze. His eyes slowly reddened, as though something deep inside him were tearing open. He'd probably expected me to push him away, maybe even say worse things. But he'd never imagined I'd take back my love.I had simply realized something: the man I'd fallen for, the man I'd loved in the beginning, might have been real. What had really trapped me, left me too numb even to cry, wasn't him. It was my own obsession.I'd tied every hope I had to one person, and I'd kept them tied there for seven years.I'd held on so tightly that I forgot what I liked. I lost the strength to cry. I began to think living meant enduring. But everyone loves freedom. If he could have it, so could I.Vincenzo, though, clearly didn't want to understand any of that.He spun around and pointed toward the classroom at the other end of the hall, his voice a low snarl."Is this because of him?"I was taken aback."What are you talking about?""Because of him!" he shouted, his eyes bloodshot. "You two looked

Lorenzo's brows drew together, his eyes darting between Vincenzo and me. He looked like he wanted to say something, but in the end, he nodded.I followed Vincenzo out the door. The hallway was quiet except for the kids' laughter in the distance. He stood at the end of the hall, staring at me hungrily, as though he were trying to burn every inch of me into his memory."Do you know how long I've been looking for you?" His voice was raw. "I've spent the past few days searching ballet schools all over Europe. I knew you'd go back to dance."I leaned against the wall, arms crossed, and looked at him."So? What's your point? That you know me so well?"He faltered."Vivian... I know about the baby." He stepped closer and lowered his voice. "But we can have another one. I'll make it up to you."We've had seven years together. I just lost my head for a little while."He paused and swallowed hard."And don't worry. That woman isn't carrying my child anymore."He sounded as though he were reading

He'd lost a lot of weight. His jaw was sharper than before, and dark circles ringed his eyes, as though he hadn't slept properly in days. His suit was wrinkled, and his tie hung loose around his neck.He was glaring at us.Lorenzo's hand was still raised, his fingers almost brushing my lips."Who is he?"Vincenzo's voice was rough as sandpaper. The warmth slowly drained from my face.I'd known this day would come.He was the head of the Moretti family, after all, and his reach was almost limitless. Finding me in Spain was only a matter of time.I just hadn't expected it to be now.He strode over and grabbed my wrist. His grip was so tight that his fingers dug into my skin.I didn't fight him.Not because I didn't have the strength. I just didn't want to make a scene here. The kids were still gathered around us, wide-eyed and confused.I looked up at him, my voice tired."Let's talk outside."I'd barely turned when Lorenzo stepped in front of me.He frowned, his gaze dropping to Vincenz
