Chapter 9

Author: Ivy
The Saatchi Gallery's young artists' show opened on Friday evening.

The gallery was in Chelsea. Its high-ceilinged white rooms were packed with well-known guests, and the air smelled of champagne and lilies.

My two studies hung in the second-floor gallery.

One was an empty spiral staircase in a rainstorm, all dark gray except for a faint warm light on the banister. The other was the Thames at dawn, wide sweeps of cold blue and pale violet woven together, the brushstrokes bold and open.

  • On Our Wedding Day, My Fiancé Described My Sister's Birthmark   Chapter 11

A man was leaning against the car door.I hadn't seen Ethan in more than half a year, and he was so thin he barely looked like himself. His once handsome, proud face was hollow, and his black trench coat hung loose on him. He didn't have an umbrella. He just let the fine rain fall on his hair and shoulders. When he saw me come out, he didn't charge at me like last time.He just stood there like a kid who'd done something wrong, watching me carefully, as if one step forward might shatter the vision in front of him.I stopped about ten feet away from him."Can I help you, Mr. Green?"When he heard me call him "Mr. Green," he flinched hard.He slowly pulled a manila envelope out of his pocket and held it out with both hands. His voice was barely above a whisper. "Aria, I'm not here to make you come back to New York."I didn't take it. "What is this?""It's the transfer agreement for the Green Group's art foundation, and... a statement from St. Patrick's Cathedral," he said with difficulty

Everyone was stunned.Even Arthur was taken aback for a moment. Then he tactfully stepped back half a pace.I shook out my stinging hand and faced Ethan. His head was still turned from the slap."Ethan Green, don't judge everyone else by your own filthy mind." My voice was steady. "Four years ago, you married me to get back at Celina. Four years later, you chased me to London to feed your pathetic need to own something. From start to finish, you've only ever seen women as trophies with a price tag."A clear red handprint rose on Ethan's cheek. He didn't argue. He didn't even move. He just stared at me blankly as the color slowly drained from his face."You want to know why I won't go back?" I pointed at my painting of the Thames at dawn on the wall. "Because here, I'm Aria Linden, a painter. At the Green estate, I was only a substitute living in Celina's shadow."I spent four years paying off what the Linden family owed you. From the moment you described Celina's birthmark when someone

The other was the Thames at dawn, wide sweeps of cold blue and pale violet woven together, the brushstrokes bold and open.Professor Carter came over with two glasses of champagne and handed me one. "Congratulations, Aria. A Swiss collector just bought the first painting for £20,000."I was stunned. "£20,000?""For a first-year master's student who's only just started, that's an amazing beginning," the professor said with a wink. "And someone's made a big offer on the other one too. The buyer's a little unusual, though.""Unusual?""A young English aristocrat. Lord Arthur Howard, a director at the Greenwich Foundation." The

Aria's POV:Three days later, London got its first cold rain of the winter. The Royal College of Art's old red-brick building in Kensington looked quiet and solemn in the misty rain.Bundled up in a heavy black tweed coat, I carried the turpentine and linseed oil I'd just bought at the art supply store down a cobblestone path covered in wet leaves. The London air was cold and damp, smelling of earth and grass, but every breath of it was free.No sharp citrus scent. No custom suits to iron every morning. And no man always watching me with that critical look.My new advisor was Professor Carter, a renowned contemporary figurative expressionist painter. When I walked into the warm studio, students from around the world were mixing paint at their easels, absorbed in their work."Aria, there's real tension in today's still life," Professor Carter said, coming over with a cup of hot tea and glancing at my canvas. "Especially the way you handle light and shadow. There's a restraint in it, som

The gates of the Green estate swung slowly open in the dark. The butler and the staff stood waiting in the front hall, and the whole house was dead silent.Ethan took the spiral staircase two steps at a time and pushed open the door to the master bedroom.Everything was neat.On the nightstand sat a glass of water that had long since gone cold. Aria had poured it for him last night before bed. In the walk-in closet, all his shirts hung perfectly in order from light to dark, every one of them ironed without a single crease.Ethan yanked open the closet on Aria's side.Empty.Apart from a row of expensive evening gowns the Green family had ordered for her, everything that was actually hers was gone. The soft cotton sweaters, the faded jeans, the plain canvas tote bags. All of it.On the vanity, her priceless jewelry had been neatly arranged in its boxes, including the diamond necklaces and jade bracelets he'd given her every birthday and anniversary.Every box had a little sticky note wi

"Celina!"Aria's mother came clattering down the hospital hallway in her heels. The moment she saw Ethan, she burst into tears. "Ethan, how's Celina? What did the doctor say? She's always been so delicate. How is she supposed to bear this?!"Ethan looked at the woman in front of him, his face expressionless. This was Aria and Celina's own mother."Celina's out of danger." Ethan's voice was completely flat.Mrs. Linden pressed a hand to her chest and let out a long breath, then started cursing, her face twisted with resentment. "This is all Aria's fault, that little jinx! Why would she run out on her own wedding? Now the whole city's laughing at the Linden family! If she hadn't pulled this stunt, Celina never would have gotten so upset!"Ethan's eyes narrowed and turned cold. "What did you say?"His look startled her, and she shrank back a little guiltily, but she wouldn't back down. "It's true! I warned her in the bridal suite. I told her Celina was back and she'd better know her place
