"Meridian Holdings Trust," I said, reading the name off the notepad where I'd written it the moment Gideon left the kitchen. "He panicked, Milo. A real panic. Took the papers back before I could ask another question."

"Read me everything he said, word for word."

I recited it, every line, the way his voice had gone hard when he asked who told me, the way his eyes had searched my face like he was hunting for a lie he couldn't quite locate.

"That's not a man protecting a minor subsidiary," Milo said. "That's a man protecting something that could end him. Send me every detail you have on that entity. I'll start tracing it today."

He called back four hours later, and the change in his voice told me he'd found something before he said a word.

"Elise, I need you to sit down for this."

"I'm sitting."

"Meridian Holdings looked clean on the surface. Registered two years ago, minimal activity, nothing that would draw attention in a routine audit. But once I followed the money moving through it, the structure stopped looking like a subsidiary and started looking like a laundering chain."

"Explain that in language I understand."

"Money moves from your father's company into Meridian. From Meridian, it splits into four smaller shell companies, each one holding the funds for a short period before passing them along again. All four streams converge into a single private investment firm. The kind that doesn't publish returns, doesn't take outside investors, and doesn't explain where its capital comes from."

My stomach tightened. "How much money are we talking about?"

"By a conservative estimate, based on what I've traced so far, upward of eleven million dollars over three years."

I sat with that number a long moment, unable to make it feel real.

"There's something else," Milo said. "One of the shell companies, the third one in the chain, lists an authorized signatory on its formation documents."

"Naomi."

"Naomi Reed. Her signature, her name, on paperwork tied to funds being laundered out of your father's company."

Anger flared before I could stop it. "She told me she didn't know about the fraud. She told me Gideon used her name without her knowledge."

"Maybe he did, on some documents. But this one has her signature notarized in person. That's not something you fake without her standing in the room."

"So she lied to me."

"Or she's been lying to herself for four years and ran out of room to keep doing it. Either way, you need to talk to her again before you decide which."

I thought of her on my porch, handing me the flash drive, her voice breaking as she told me she'd been used the same way I had. Maybe all of it had been another performance. Maybe I'd been foolish enough to believe her twice.

I was still turning that thought over when my phone rang.

Naomi.

I almost didn't answer. I let it ring twice before curiosity won out over anger.

"What do you want?"

"Elise, please, hear me out." Her voice shook, thin and fast, a far cry from the composed woman who'd handed me evidence a week ago. "Gideon knows someone accessed the financial records. He's furious. He told me this morning that if the fraud comes to light, he'll make sure every signature traces back to me. He's already talking about me taking the fall."

"You signed those documents, Naomi. I have proof. Your name is on a shell company at the center of this entire scheme."

Silence stretched on the line.

"I know," she said at last, her voice breaking. "I need to explain that to you in person. Not like this. Please."

We met that evening at a diner two hours outside the city, a place neither of us had ever been, chosen because no one who knew either of our faces would think to look for us there.

Naomi looked smaller than she had at my dinner table, her hands wrapped around a coffee cup she wasn't drinking.

"Start with the shell company," I said. "The one with your name on it."

"Gideon told me it was a consulting entity. He said signing the formation papers was a formality, that I'd be listed as a director in name only while the actual work stayed with his team. I believed him because I always believed him. I signed papers for him for four years without asking enough questions."

"That excuse is getting thin, Naomi."

"I know. But I'm telling you the truth now, and the truth is worse than what you already know." She wrapped her hands tighter around the cup. "The investment firm all this money disappears into, Gideon didn't introduce me to it. Someone else did, before Gideon and I ever became involved. Someone who told me the arrangement was already running long before I signed anything."

My pulse climbed. "Who?"

She hesitated, glancing around the empty diner like the walls themselves might be listening.

"Desmond Vale."

The name hit me like a hand closing around my throat.

"That's impossible," I said. "Desmond worked for my father. He ran half our overseas partnerships. He disappeared right after the funeral. No forwarding address, no resignation letter, nothing. My father trusted him more than almost anyone at the company."

"I know how it sounds."

"You don't understand. Desmond stood at my father's graveside. He carried the casket. And two weeks later he vanished without a word to anyone, including me."

"He's the one who set up the arrangement with the investment firm," Naomi said. "He came to me years ago, told me there was an opportunity to earn consulting fees for minimal work. I didn't know it was connected to your father's estate until much later. By the time I understood what I was part of, I was already in too deep to walk away without exposing myself."

I stared at her, my mind racing through years of memory, trying to reconcile the quiet, competent man who used to bring me chocolates at Christmas with whatever Naomi was describing.

"I need everything you have on him," I said. "Every document, every email, every account number."

"I don't have much. Desmond was careful, more careful than Gideon ever was. But I kept one thing, in case I ever needed proof he existed at all."

She slid a folded piece of paper across the table, an account number and a name written in her handwriting.

"That's the account Desmond used to move money before I ever got involved. I don't know what it connects to now. I never had access beyond that."

I sent the account number to Milo the moment I got home, and he called back before midnight, his voice tight in a way I hadn't heard from him before.

"Elise, I traced the account Naomi gave you."

"And?"

"It belonged to Desmond Vale. Three weeks before your father died, he transferred a large sum from that account into an entity connected to Gideon."

The room tilted around me.

"Three weeks before," I repeated. "Gideon didn't know my father back then. Not according to what we found. That email about the ownership structure was dated four months before we ever met, and this transfer happened even earlier than that."

"I know."

I stared at the numbers on my screen, at the date stamped beside the transfer, and the shape of everything I thought I understood collapsed into something far larger and far older than I'd imagined.

"Then Gideon didn't start this," I said.

Milo's voice turned serious.

"No. He joined something that was already happening."

"How long have you been standing there?"Gideon didn't answer. He crossed the study in three slow steps, his eyes dropping to the open folder on the desk in front of me, my father's letter still visible inside it.I closed it before he reached me, my hand moving faster than my thoughts could catch up to."What are you doing in here?" he asked, his voice even, a question with no heat behind it yet."Looking for the restructuring papers." I kept my hands flat on the desk, steady, though my pulse was anything but. "You said you left them for me.""Those are on the kitchen counter. You know that." He studied my face the way he might study a contract with a clause he didn't trust. "Why are you going through my father in law's old files, Elise?""They're my father's files," I said. "In my house. In my study.""That's not what I asked."I made myself hold his gaze instead of looking away. Looking away was what a guilty woman did. A woman with nothing to hide looked tired, a little annoyed at

*Whatever you do, do not trust the man you married.*My hands shook so hard the phone almost slipped from my grip. I set it flat on the table, both palms pressed against the screen to hold it steady, and forced myself to keep reading.*I know how this sounds, coming from a dead man you trusted to warn you too late. But I need you to understand one thing before you decide I've lost my mind. This isn't jealousy, and it isn't paranoia. Weeks ago, I found money moving through the company that shouldn't exist. Accounts I never opened. Transfers I never approved. Someone inside Delaney Holdings has been building a plan in the dark, and I don't yet know how deep it runs.*I read that line twice, my pulse a drumbeat in my ears.*I trusted very few people with what I found. Gideon was one of them.*My stomach dropped.*I know what you're thinking. If I suspected him, why would I let him near you, near the company, near anything that mattered? Here is the truth, Elise, and I need you to hear al

  • Once Bitten, Twice Shy   CHAPTER 5: THE WOMAN HE MARRIED

I sat in the dark of my bedroom, the laptop open on my knees, the photograph of my father and Gideon still glowing on the screen, and watched every excuse I'd made for my husband collapse at once.I had told myself the affair started after the marriage went stale. I had told myself the fraud grew out of ambition, a man who got greedy after years of success. Somewhere underneath the anger, I had told myself Gideon once loved me before he decided I was worth more as a target than a wife. The photograph erased that last comfort.Eight months before we met, my husband already knew my father.I thought back to the night we were introduced, a charity gala my father hosted every autumn, the kind of event where half the room wore borrowed confidence and the other half wore old money. Gideon had approached me near the bar, charming in a way that seemed effortless at the time. He told me later he'd noticed me across the room and couldn't stop himself from crossing it.Now I wondered if he'd cro

  • Once Bitten, Twice Shy   CHAPTER 4: THE MISTRESS

"I invited Naomi to dinner tonight."Gideon said it while tying his tie in front of the bedroom mirror, casual, the way he might mention a meeting moved to Thursday instead of inviting his mistress into our home."Naomi Reed?" I kept my voice light, my hands steady on the necklace clasp behind my neck."She's been carrying most of the restructuring work. I thought it would be good for you two to know each other, since she'll be around more once the consolidation closes."I watched him in the mirror, the careful way his eyes avoided mine as he said it. This wasn't a courtesy dinner. It was a test, and I already understood what he was watching for."Sounds nice," I said, and smiled the way a woman smiles when she has no idea her husband is testing her.Naomi arrived at seven, a dress too fitted for a casual dinner, a smile too rehearsed to be comfortable. Gideon greeted her with the polite distance of a man greeting an employee, a handshake, a gesture toward the living room, no trace of

  • Once Bitten, Twice Shy   CHAPTER 3: THE WARNING

"Milo, I need you to look at some documents. Today, if you can."My voice came out steadier than I expected, considering I hadn't slept more than two hours since finding that photograph. I sat in my car outside a coffee shop three blocks from Shaw Holdings, phone pressed to my ear, the folder of images still open on the passenger seat beside me."Elise, it's seven in the morning." Milo Grant's voice carried the roughness of a man who'd been my father's lawyer for twenty years and had learned to answer his phone before he was awake. "What kind of documents?""Restructuring paperwork. Some transfer agreements I don't understand.""Send them over. I'll look before my nine o'clock."I didn't tell him where I'd found them, or whose signature I suspected was forged, or which name kept turning up where mine should have been. I forwarded the photographs one by one and kept the rest to myself. He called back forty minutes later, and his tone told me everything before he said a word."Where did
