MasukI shifted and let Mara take control of my form as soon as we’re in the vastness of the White Woods.
She’s going faster day by day. That’s what my father and sister don’t know. They keep saying I am weak and slow, they don’t know that Mara has talents of her own.
With Mara running, we continued to channel all my anger and hatred and disdain by turning them into the strength we spent running through the snowy forest. It was a labyrinth of frost-covered foliage and frozen trees, but Mara’s icy breath didn’t stop her.
Now that I’m away from my so-called family, now that I’m as far from the Moonflame Pack as possible...I feel a little bit of a sense of relief. Not a little bit, but an absolute sense of relief. It was as if a large thorn that had been embedded in my side for years had finally been removed.
Mara ran and ran, letting the morning winter breeze caress our moon-white fur. It was also our companion as we traversed the white forest.
After hours of running, we heard the sound of flowing water. I do not know how it happened, that there are still parts of our country that remain as is, like the trees with their leaves intact and this running river, even with the Alpha King’s eternal frozen season. We looked beyond the trees and there, a river with its tempting fresh cool water made us halt. However, in the distance, some parts of the river are mildly frozen. We didn’t heed it.
“Let’s rest for a bit.”
Mara rested and shifted into me, our human form. I feel the softness of the winter wind and listen to the rustling of the frosty trees. “It’s peaceful here,” Mara claimed.
Alone and free. Finally, after eighteen years, I’m alone and free.
I bent down and scooped a handful of water on my open palms. The water tastes so fresh and cool. I also washed my face with it to continue the rest of the day not looking like one step closer to the grave. I don’t know where I’m going now. The moment I realize I’m alone and free, I also realize that I have no mate and no pack. I have no life being a wandering she-wolf.
Or maybe my father’s anger will eventually pass and will bid me to return...
I don’t care if he labels me as a pack outcast and stations me at the farthest edge of the packgrounds—
“It won’t happen,” said Mara.
Right. Maybe I’m not ready to be alone and totally free after all.
“Or maybe we’ll meet someone that fate has bestowed on us.” Mara’s right. Perhaps we’ll meet my second-chance mate along the way. There’s no harm in hoping. Besides, I’m an Alpha’s daughter—an Alpha’s blood runs in my veins. Surely the Moon Goddess won’t just abandon me that easily.
Half an hour later, I gave a simple prayer of gratitude to the Moon Goddess as I finally completed my rest and breakfast. One of the servants, an Omega, who packed my things made sure I had food enough to allow me to survive in the harshness of the White Woods.
I was about to shift again and run north when an arrow flew past me. It was too quick for my wolf sight to notice. Thankfully, the arrow only passed through my left shoulder. The sleeve there is the reason my skin remained unscathed.
“Tresspasser over here! Tresspasser over here!”
Out of nowhere, guards sprang out of the snowy bushes, the frozen trees, the tall icy grasses. I didn’t notice them earlier nor picked up their scent. It seems they blended with the snow-white fur cloaks that they wore. I was probably too preoccupied by the river to check my surroundings.
“Please. I didn’t do anything!” I explained, lifting my hands open to the air.
“You did!” The one in front of me growled. He’s wearing an armor with a black-and-gold insignia. I know that symbol. I’ve seen that before. “You’ve trespassed the Blackwind Pack territory, Rogue.”
“I am not a Rogue. I am an Alpha’s daughter. Alpha Marcus of the Moonflame Pack is my father!”
Mara started to snarl inside me. The mere sight of Blackwind Pack guards already sent us trembling. Indeed, the Blackwind Pack is the home of a cruel Alpha who even refuses to bow down before the Alpha King, my father once said.
And if they capture me and take me to their dungeons...I’m doomed. I can’t afford to be an enemy under the eyes of the Alpha King. No one lives when an enemy comes face-to-face with the Alpha King.
They all looked at each other, communicating silently through their minds.
“Alpha Marcus has only one daughter, and her name is Elodie with blonde hair and blue eyes. You have black hair.”
I can’t believe it. Did my bitch of a sister tip off these guards?
“It’s possible,” Mara hissed.
“The Alpha of the Moonflame Pack has two daughters! I’m the younger one. My name is Evadne.” I pulled up my right sleeve. Every wolf has a tattoo of their pack’s insignia on their right arm. Those who don’t are the ones excommunicated and banished, the ones who became Rogues.
When their eyes landed on my right arm, their brows raised.
“I told you,” I smirked.
“Yeah you did,” said the one on my right.
I glanced at my right arm, and my eyes widened too. The tattoo was no longer there.
My father did really banish his younger daughter this time for their own good.

The dungeons here in the Blackwind Pack are more damp, a rotten scent mingling in the air as if someone died here and the guards just let their bodies decompose. The mixture of the winter air and mountain snow and decomposing flesh is extremely awful. I vomited after a minute they locked me up here.
I was forced to go with them. Blindfolded. As a trespassing ‘Rogue’ in the Alpha King’s enemy pack, either I die on the spot or they lock me up in the dungeons awaiting the judgment of their Alpha.
But at least the room where I am has cooler surroundings and not the ones which have a harshness to the cold that you’ll become like an ice statue the next day you wake up on the floor. And they provide food and water as soon as they lock me up too so that’s a bonus.
The only problem? I’m chained to the wall and can’t even reach the said food and water. It was a greater torture, I realized. To have something you need in front of you but you can never have it. You're only meant to stare and smell and lick your lips as if you can feel the cold water entering your mouth and down your throat.
And I guess I just escaped the torment of the Moonflame Pack, only to dive deeper into the tortures of the Blackwind Pack.
I am alone now. But I am certainly not free.
My father’s screams were nothing compared to Elodie’s wailing.“Well, well, well, sister,” I drawled as I entered her cell. “Your dress did not seem so lovely to everyone's eyes today.”She growled as her red-rimmed eyes studied me.“Liking your new room, Elodie?”“Shut up, bitch.”“Oh, I will. But I heard you have a new lover, and pardon my need to confirm the rumors because it’s so irresistible to know all about where the loyalty of your pussy lies.”Elodie straightened. And as if she had never heard the rest of my insult, she stood. “Is he here?” she whispered, her eyes appearing excited yet gleaming with insanity. “Is Marc here for me?”I snorted. “The only ones here for you are the vermin rats, Elodie. Although you can count yourself as one.” “Funny that you’re the one who used to catch them when you were a child.” “Oh? But I’m no longer a child now, sister. I’m now the Luna Queen." A smile lit up my face. "Your Luna Queen.”“And should I clap for you, the
Evadne’s POVThe sight of my father begging and pleading for his life was a portrait worth painting over and over again. I was once in his place. I was once like him, worse than him, actually. I have to beg for everything from my own father, even for food or the luxury to have proper clothes and a room during my monthly bleeding.“You bastard!” But Marcus cannot even stretch both of his arms to wrap his hands around the Alpha King’s throat as the shackles on his wrists and ankles, made from pure silver, made sure his suffering is tight and uncomfortable. The corner of my mouth twitched. It's time to squeeze my father for his secrets. “Where is he, Marcus?” He glared back at his only daughter. I simply glared back at him as he asked, “Who?” “Marcos, former Alpha of the Blackwind Pack,” Kallias replied for me as he’s sure that his mate is more of a walking blizzard than he already is. I let a little of Kallias’ icy stare reflect on my own.
Kallias’s POV (in 3rd Person)He heard his mate’s thoughts without her knowing: “I welcomed all of him into my heart.” “Me,” he said to himself in the quiet aftermath of their lovemaking. “She welcomed me into her heart.”It was more than Kallias could hope for. When he first saw her in the grounds of the Blackwind Pack amidst battle, she was cowering and helpless and hopeless. Now, he's her strength and hope and the reason she rose from that pit of helplessness. Evadne was asleep peacefully beside him, the clock striking noon. But he didn’t mind the time or the swelling emotion in his chest. He will protect his mate from her own father, her own sister, even from her own thoughts sometimes. He had never felt like this since he was a young boy, his heart singing with joy every time he was with her. Her—the friend he cannot remember the face or the name or even the scent. But he can remember the feeling, and he lets it wash over him. He surrendered to the feeling
Seeing the brewing drama that unfolded before us, my father slowly crawled away out of our sight— “Not so fast, Marcus!” My mate barked. Marcus whimpered like a cornered dog, ‘cause he actually is, and halted immediately. “We shall talk later about...this, Evadne.” And then Kallias picked up my father by the neck. By the way he said “this”, it seems like he’s confused whether to say this or us. He should have said, “We shall talk about us, Evadne.” But then again, just like what my mate said yesterday, we must not show everyone that we are each other’s strength and weakness. Kallias must continue and must always be seen as the cold and calculating Alpha King of Winter, because if his enemies see a crack in the ice...I don’t want to consider what will become of it.I touched my mating mark, and his eyes followed it. He knew exactly why I touched my neck. My mating mark is sort of a wedding ring that I have to show him every time we argue to remind hi
"Alright, first question: what makes you think that my father's mysterious brother will come for him in the Prison of Despair that everyone is afraid of?"Both of their mouths hung open; they never thought of that. I cleared my throat and pointed at Alpha Fionn. “I agree with Alpha Fionn. His entire plan could work, or at least half of it.”My mate’s bestfriend’s brother chuckled lightly. “Finally, you called me an Alpha, Luna Queen Evadne.”I winced at his words and at him calling me by my full title. I can just settle with everyone calling me Luna since I am the de facto Luna of the Nightblood Pack even without the mating ceremony yet, and I don’t need them reminding me that I am also the Luna Queen, the Luna of all Lunas just like Kallias is the Alpha of all Alphas.‘Of all Alphas’...I blinked at the words. The attack today that resulted in two deaths and one being tortured for information...I realized that this too, from the former Blackwind Pack’s Alpha, whose name Kal just revea
While my father slept, which is a nicer word for locking him as he passed out in his room while two guards watched over his chamber, Kal and I found ourselves arguing in the library. And by arguing, I meant discussing what to do with my father. As for my sister, the already confused emotions that I felt for her became even more confused.“Evadne,” he called to me as I paced in front of him, the bookshelves behind me seemed to judge my panic attack too.“Kal, no. Listen to me. He...he’s been sleeping with her and all this time I thought Elodie simply hates me because—because she—”“Evadne.” Kal stood and reached for my hands, caressing the back of my palms with his thumbs. “They deserve the punishment I have reserved for them.”I inhaled a sharp breath. “Elodie hates me because I’m Marcus’s biological daughter! And the least he can do is destroy me emotionally and physically, whereas she...she...” I sighed as I willed myself to take another deep breath and spill out the words, the trut
“Shit!” I cursed under my breath. I shouldn’t have lingered longer than ten minutes in that river.“Go send a mind-link to your father and sister. They probably heard you’re captured now considering it’s already sundown,” Mara said to me.“They will not answer,” I sucked a sharp breath between my teet
The Alpha King’s question puts a strain on me. A question that I know the answer to, but can never have the courage to give it as the answer.“You know. As your Alpha King.” He smiles casually as he caresses a frosty red rose in the middle of the table. “Don't you love me as an Alpha King?”“Oh!” M
When Kal noticed the gloom in my gaze, he clicked his fingers and Omega servants poured in out of every corner of the gardens and bushes and hedges.I was too busy with Kallias that I didn't realize their presence. They were bearing snacks consisting of plates of sweets and savory meals and bottles
Rarely do I see the sun's face, thanks to the harsh winter often visiting the Moonflame Pack. But here in the abode of the Nightblood Pack, sometimes winters are soft depending on the Alpha King’s mood according to Geneva. But there are times that it is as cold as his icy eyes per Caesar’s words.
