Carissa's POV
After Dylan went out that afternoon, the house seemed more calm than normal. The night wind came in through the gaps in the living room window, bringing the smell of damp leaves and wet ground. Mom was in the kitchen, cleaning some cups left on the dining table. Dad had gone to his room before, maybe tired - or maybe just giving me space.
I sat on a step, arms around my legs, looking at the door that had just shut some minutes ago. The weight in my chest stayed—not only because Dylan was gone but also due to all the stuff left unsaid and everything that shouldn't have taken place.
Raihan came out of the kitchen, holding two mugs of hot tea. He gave me one without a word. The mug was a bit weighty, and its warmth touched softly on my face. I took it slowly.
“Thanks,” I murmured.
He sat a step under me, leaning his back on the wood railing. Quiet. But not th
Carissa's POVI sat on the side of the bed, looking at my hands linked together. The ring on my hand showed the soft light from the lamp in the room, making a small shadow on the ground. It was a long day and even if we took just a few little steps together, my heart still felt like a little boat moving on an easy lake! Quiet but shaky.Dylan had just gone out of the room a little while ago after phoning his mom. He said he’d return in five minutes but in those five minutes my mind had already floated far and wide.I leaned low and took a light blue box from the drawer next to the bed. Inside was a little pin—a plain frangipani bloom—that Mom had once gifted me. She said she put it on when Dad asked her to marry him. I wasn’t certain if I would wear it on my wedding day but for some reason today, I just wanted to open the box and keep that memory near again"You still like frangipani,
Carissa's POV"We got a lot of days coming," Dylan said. "Days when you may not feel like chatting too much. Days when I might want time alone. Days when we help each other out. And days when we just sit quietly... but now we’re still on the same side."I shook my head slowly. "You see? Today I don’t want long replies. I don’t want big promises. Just being here with you—like this—it’s enough to make me feel sure"Dylan tilted his head and gazed at me. “Sure of what?”“That you are home.”His grin showed up slowly. He held my hand more tight like putting his promise in our fingers. Not needing to say anything else I knew we had both made a choice. The day went on. Night came close with no sound, no fuss, and no shocks. Just two folks sitting in calm knowing, in a home not yet truly theirs but already feeling
Carissa's POVI looked at the piece of sponge cake. Like it was easier to answer than the question before."I don't know mom but if he comes maybe it's a good sign. A sign that he and I have ended things peacefully."Mom shook her head. “I just don’t want you to leave a part of your heart in the past when you're moving into your future.”I got what she said. And truthfully, I had already accepted it. The bond I once believed would go on forever just needed some time—time for me to really see it for what it was. Raihan wasn’t right for me. And I wasn’t right for him.“Did Dylan phone before?” Mom asked her tone lighter now.I smiled a bit. “Yeah. He asked which ring I want to wear he said he already picked a design but still wanted my thought.”“Hmm... nice idea,&rdquo
Carissa's POVI took a big breath, put my cup on the table by the bed, and slowly got up. My bare feet felt the cold wood floor. I liked that feeling—a bit sharp but true. Like a sign that I was still here in my life which had now changed... yet strange, I felt more at calm than any time before.I went to the window and mo͏ved the curtain a bit. Outside, the yard looked plain but my eyes spotted a little pot of lavender Dylan had put in two weeks before. “So a house smells good,” he’d said. I giggled softly, recalling the look on his face as he tried to seem serious while putting it in.Who would’ve guessed that the guy I once only saw as a chill and strange coworker would now be the person I think of first every morning?I went down to the kitchen and began to make something for lunch. Not since I was hungry, but more to fill the silence in my head. Sometimes, I look at the wal
I saw Dylan's writing on a little bit of paper.“For you Carissa. Because you're the light in all this uncertainty. I won’t say everything will be simple but I promise I’ll always hold your hand even when dark comes again. Until forever okay?”I stood still. My hands shook a bit as I felt the chain. Not since it was fancy—not at all. But since I knew Dylan wasn’t the soft-hearted sort, and this note… were his way of being strong“I have to wear this necklace,” I whispered.Raihan smiled. “Want me to help?”I shook my head a little so he could put it around my neck. When the tiny charm hit my skin, it felt like Dylan was holding me, even if he wasn’t really there .“Dylan has changed a lot, hasn’t he?” Raihan said after a bit.I turned to him. &ldquo
Carissa's POVI did not reply fast. But Mom always saw. I gazed down, slowly turning the cup in my hand."Dylan… he is nice. He tries to see me, even when I don’t know how to say what I mean. But, Mom, what if one day I can’t love him like he should be loved?"My mom sighed then got up and sat next to me. Her hand softly moved to my shoulder“You don’t have to know the answer now Carissa. Marriage isn't about full surety. It’s about wanting to grow together."I looked at her."Love ain't only about falling and feeling comfy always. Sometimes love is a tough job. Sometimes, you gotta wake up and pick love even when the heart feels uncertain."I took a big breath. Her words were nice, but they still left lots of quiet in my head. After mom went out of the room, I laid down, looking at the ro
