The Grand Kingsland Hotel ballroom glittered like a den of wolves wearing diamonds.

Crystal chandeliers cast golden light over hundreds of the city’s elite — businessmen, politicians, socialites — all circling each other with fake smiles and real knives. Selena stayed close to Matthew’s side, painfully aware of how many eyes kept drifting toward them.

The deep burgundy gown fit her almost too perfectly, elegant enough for the ballroom but impossible to completely disappear in. Her curly hair was styled in an elegant updo, and the massive diamond ring on her finger caught every light.

Matthew looked unfairly composed in a black tuxedo, the kind of man people instinctively moved around with, without realizing it. Tall, commanding, and dangerously handsome. His hand settled on her lower back, firm enough to guide her through the crowd without ever asking where she wanted to go.

“Smile,” he murmured near her ear. “People are watching us too closely tonight.”

"I'm smiling," she said through gritted teeth. "Is this not performant enough for you?"

"Better," he said quietly, settling his hand on her lower back.

The approval in his voice made her briefly angry with herself for caring.

They made their way through the crowd, accepting congratulations and making small talk with various business associates. Selena played the part flawlessly—gracious, polite, exactly what a billionaire's new wife should be.

Then Victoria appeared, stunning in a backless gold gown, and suddenly the night shifted.

"Matt, darling!" Victoria purred, walking straight toward him. "You clean up nicely."

She didn't acknowledge Selena. She simply leaned in and kissed Matthew on the corner of his mouth, leaving a red lipstick mark.

Matthew didn't push her away.

Selena watched this with the kind of calm detachment that made it clear she wasn't emotionally invested. But she noticed everything—the way Victoria's hand lingered on his chest, the way Matthew didn't correct her, the way nobody else seemed to find anything odd about his ex-girlfriend greeting him more warmly than he ever had greeted his wife.

"You're late," Matthew said to Victoria.

"Fashionably," Victoria replied, finally turning her attention to Selena. "And look at you… trying so hard. Cute."

Selena smiled. It was the smile of someone who'd heard worse and decided not to waste energy on it.

"Thank you, Victoria. You look beautiful as always."

It was the kind of compliment that sounded genuine but was actually a dismissal—an acknowledgment followed by nothing else.

Throughout dinner, Victoria dominated the conversation, touching Matthew's arm repeatedly, laughing at inside jokes Selena didn't understand. The business associates kept glancing between Victoria and Selena, clearly confused about who the actual wife was.

Selena didn't try to compete. She just ate her dinner, answered questions when asked, and let Victoria have the spotlight.

Matthew kept glancing at her, waiting for a reaction.

Selena didn't give him one.

Later, on the terrace, Matthew guided her away from the ballroom noise.

"You're doing well," he said, his voice low and commanding. "But I need more. I need them to believe you're in love with me."

Selena turned to face him, her expression unfazed.

"You need me to be a better actress than I actually am," she said simply. "Because people with real emotions tend to react when their brand new husband spends the entire evening with his ex-girlfriend. But congratulations—I'm apparently a very good liar."

Matthew stepped closer.

"You're not bothered by her presence," he observed.

"No," Selena agreed. "I'm bothered by my own pathetic response to your indifference. And I'm bothered that I'm standing here in a dress that costs more than I've made in a year, playing a role in someone else's life. But Victoria? She's actually not my problem."

She studied his face in the dim light.

"The question is, why does it matter to you whether I'm bothered? According to our contract, my feelings are irrelevant."

Matthew's jaw clenched.

"You're my wife," he said quietly. "In public."

"In public," Selena repeated. "Not in private. Not when it matters, not when you're taking calls from Victoria on our wedding night."

She stepped back, creating distance between them.

"So let's be clear—I'll be your perfect wife for the cameras. I'll smile and look devoted and play the part flawlessly. But don't ask me to actually care. That's not part of the contract."

She walked back toward the ballroom.

Matthew watched her go, and for the first time, he realized something that terrified him:

Selena might be the one person he couldn't control through intimidation or money or charm.

Because she didn't need any of those things from him.

She only needed the contract to be fulfilled.

And that made her the most dangerous woman he had ever met.

"It means you can't go to a charity gala I'm attending and get drunk and start a fight with my business rivals," Matthew said. "You have to be able to smile and look married and not embarrass me. It's not complicated.""And the intimate relations clause?""Means we don't sleep together," he said. "We don't kiss unless someone's watching. We don't touch unless we're being photographed. You have your own bedroom. I have mine. We're roommates who happen to be legally married.""What about Victoria?" Selena asked, and she knew the moment she asked it that she'd made a mistake, because Matthew's expression changed slightly."How do you know about Victoria?" he asked."I researched you," Selena said. "Before I came here. There was an article. From a few years ago. It said you were serious with someone named Victoria Lang.""We were," Matthew said, and his voice was suddenly very neutral. "That ended.""Because—""Because it did," he said, cutting her off. "And it has nothing to do with this

You can call me that curvy girl — the finest in my family, with a mad sense of humor. By the way, I’m just a 26-year-old Canadian girl. On the 10th of March, one of my bitches rang me up. “Girl, get dressed! We’re hitting the club tonight. I need my ride-or-die with me.”It was Mila Anderson. Her dad is stupid rich, so when she says club, she means proper VIP vibes. We pulled up and the bass was shaking everything. That’s when I saw Jayson. He was so damn fine I couldn’t take my eyes off him. My knees literally went weak. I froze right there. Mila looked back. “Hey girl, what’s good? Who are you staring at like that?” I didn’t even blink. “That handsome, cute, sexy guy right there. You know him?” “Yeah, he’s a regular here,” she said. I spun around smiling. “And who’s that girl next to him?” “That’s his girlfriend, Cas

Here’s a dramatic romance chapter with emotional tension and a slow-burn attraction.Chapter 8: The Contract Was Never Meant for LoveThe rain drummed softly against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Adrian Kingston’s penthouse. From the fiftieth floor, the city glittered below like a sea of stars, yet his attention never wandered beyond the woman standing in front of him.Elena Hart.Six months ago, they had signed a contract. It was simple on paper: she would pose as his fiancée for one year to satisfy his late grandfather’s final condition before he inherited the Kingston empire. In return, she would receive enough money to erase her family’s debts and start a new life.No emotions. No questions. No falling in love. Those had been the rules.Yet somewhere between charity galas, fake kisses for photographers, and late-night conversations neither of them admitted enjoying, the lines had begun to blur.“You’ve been staring at me for five minutes,” Elena teased, closing the folder she ha

Matthew walked into the conference room where Selena was already working. And everything that had been separate for the past three weeks reconnected in an instant."We need to finalize the African property," Selena said immediately, showing him her latest design iterations. "The government wants cultural authenticity, but the operational complexity is—""Significant," Matthew finished. "But manageable if we think about infrastructure as part of the cultural story instead of separate from it."They spent the next eight hours in the conference room.No breaks. No breaks. No discussion of anything beyond the work. And by 2 AM, they'd solved the African property completely. Not by compromise, but by integration. And it was the product of Matthew and Selena's collaboration at their absolute best. And they'd created it while barely acknowledging each other as human beings.Selena went home to the mansion every evening.
