“Oh man, we are sorry. We can come back,” Cyman said, putting Wren down.

She ran right over to me and climbed onto my lap.

“No Cy, we can stay. I need to hear this f’ing story,” Casey said, remembering not to curse in front of Wren.

“There’s no story. I got stuck in the blinds and Keegan heard me screaming and came to help me,” I said, cuddling Wren.

“Shirtless no less, Kee P.?” She asked.

“I just got out of the shower. Seriously Casey. Everything isn’t about some old relationship. Sometimes people move on and others don’t,” he said, nodding towards Cyman.

“Whatever Keegan. We have a child together in case you forgot,” Casey said.

“It’s beautiful. What the heck? I’m sorry Casey. I’m nervous about tonight. I didn’t mean anything by it,” he said, “Let me finish getting ready before Haven arrives,” he said.

I kept my eyes off of him the whole time he walked away. I didn’t want anyone to see me lusting after this man.

“So Case, you and Cy are a thing now?” I asked.

“We aren’t a thing. She is my everything. She and Wren are what I needed. I’m going to work hard to make sure I’m exactly who they need,” Cyman said, squeezing Casey’s shoulders.

“Daddy, you hug mommy,” Wren asked.

Oh my gosh! I hadn’t heard her call him that. It was the sweetest thing ever. He came and grabbed her off of my lap and lifted her in the air.

“Daddy hugs Wren too,” he said, bringing her down into a bear hug that only Cyman could give her.

I see it now. The way he is with Wren. The way he looked at Casey. Cyman had changed. I wanted what Casey had and found myself being envious of my gorgeous best friend.

“James, come here for a sec,” Casey said.

I walked over into the breezeway with her. Looking around and remembering this is where Keegan and I first kissed.

“What is going on with Keegan? Did you not see him all hugged up with Haven last night and this morning at breakfast?” She asked, accusingly.

“I did, but nothing was going on. He helped me get my hair out of the blinds. You wouldn’t want me to stay captive would you?” I joked.

Her face was serious. She hugged me gently.

“James, I get worried about you. I see you putting your entire heart into someone that could care less. He is probably going to the NFL next year. What would that do to you? He will be in another state. I doubt the Saints draft him. You need to think about these things,” she said.

“I told you, there is nothing there. I care for him, but it just isn’t the right time. Maybe in a few more years we will find one another again like you and Cy did. I love what you two have,” I said.

“Just take care of yourself James. Don’t let these boys knock you off your square,” she advised.

“I’m trying not to. I still can’t believe I broke up with Tate for Keegan and he was kissing another woman at breakfast,” I laughed.

It seemed so funny now that I gave up everything for him.

“You broke up with Tate?” I heard someone say quietly.

I turned around to see Keegan standing there. Before I could answer there was a knock on the door. Casey opened it to reveal Haven. She looked absolutely beautiful. She walked in as if she had been here before.

“Hi guys! What a warm welcome! Hey baby!” She said, going on her toes to kiss Keegan.

He looked at me as if to say he was sorry. Her fingers were interlaced with his already.

“Take these bags babe,” she said, holding up two shopping bags full of wine and food.

Keegan obliged and took everything into the kitchen.

“Casey right?” Haven said, reaching out to shake her hand.

Casey looked at me for approval and I nodded. She shook her hand.

“So does it feel weird dating Brees’ ex?” Casey asked.

I couldn’t believe she said that. I gave her the look of disbelief. My mouth sitting wide open, Haven turns to me and says, “Keegan always said you were like a little sister to him. I didn’t even know you two dated. Was it serious?”

Was it serious? He was the love of my life lady. Are YOU serious?

“It was short lived. Not much to report,” I said, ushering Casey away from Haven.

Casey smiled. She knew what she had done. In some ways I was happy she did. I hadn’t really heard much about Haven and if she even knew about me and Keegan. Clearly he hadn’t told her the truth. I was like a sister? I don’t think he would ever think of me in that way. Not anymore.

As everyone settled in, including my dad and Allison, we moved into the dining room. Haven had gotten a beautiful glazed ham, with mashed potatoes, green beans and sweet rolls. Everything looked amazing.

“It looks lovely, Haven,” I said.

She nodded, smiled, and began passing the rolls.

“So I’m excited to hear why you guys have brought us here,” my dad said, scooping a pile of mashed potatoes onto his plate.

Keegan cleared his throat. We all turned our heads in his direction.

“I came to get my girl,” he said. The words fell off of his tongue like sweet honey. His girl. That had to be the sexiest thing he has ever said. “Your girl? When did I become your girl?” I asked, breathing heavy. He lifted my chin and rubbed his thumb on my lips.“You’ve always been my girl. Even when you were someone else’s. I’ve always loved you and I always will,” he said. He leaned in and I knew he was going to kiss me.“Kee,” I said, softly and with no will power left. “Can I please,” he begged, rubbing my lips once more. A magnetic energy pulled him towards me and I let down my guard. Our lips softly touched. “How does this work though?” I asked. “Well that’s what I came to tell you. I stay about three hours from here now,” he said.“Huh? How? Why?” I asked.“I was drafted by the Tennessee Titans, Brees. I live here now,” he said. “Are you serious? Oh my gosh, Keegan! Congratulations!” I screamed, wrapping my arms around his neck.He lifted me onto the counter, so that

Three months had gone by since I had been home. I hadn’t seen or spoken to Keegan. He texted me and called me, but I never answered. To talk to him would mean I would have to tear the bandaid off of my heart and I wasn’t ready for that. I finished my junior year of college and I was preparing myself mentally to go home for the summer. Softball players stayed on campus for a month longer than other students, due to our schedules. Since Keegan was probably drafted already, he wouldn’t be at the house. I begged everyone not to tell me anything about him and I avoided social media and television. It gave me the perfect opportunity to get home and bond with the twins and my mom. Quinn and Baylen were moving into their house too, so I wanted to be there to support them. They were living closer to my dad though but it was only about a 20 minute drive. I also was eager to spend time with Wren and Casey. Since Casey had finally accepted Cyman’s proposal, I’m sure there was another wedding t

I sat up. “How can you say that? That was a goodbye kiss, and you know it. You going with her, knowing how she feels about you, isn’t something I can ignore. Am I supposed to wait while you play house with Haven?”I stood, stepping out of his reach.“Brees,” he pleaded, “I love you. Please come sit with me. I’m leaving in like ten minutes. I don’t want to spend our last moments together fighting. .”I shook my head. “I can’t be that girl anymore.”“Eight weeks,” he said. “We can survive eight weeks. I swear it’ll be worth it.”I wanted to believe him. My heart refused.“Let’s revisit this in eight weeks then. If you love me now, you will love me then,” I said.He reached for me again just as the door opened.“James?” Casey said. “You okay?”I nodded, then ran to her, burying my face in her shoulder.“Brees, please,” Keegan said behind me. “Not like this.”“Kee,” Casey cut in coldly, “I just saw Haven’s car down the street. She looked like she was freshening up for her boy toy. You sho

Casey was coming over to help me pack. Tomorrow, I’d be back in Tennessee. Today, Keegan was leaving with Haven.Nothing tasted right. Sounds I usually loved, the birds, the kids laughing outside, fell flat. Time moved without me, thick and slow, like I was watching my life through glass.Keegan had broken me again, and I didn’t know how to stitch myself back together. With both of us leaving, distance felt like the only mercy. I stayed out of the shared spaces, avoided the kitchen, the living room, anywhere I might run into him. I knew he’d want to explain. I didn’t have the strength to listen. I loved him, but what we shared the other night, made that door closed for good. I longed for him, but he had to live his life and I had to live mine. I told myself I was done. I’d moved on with Tate. We’d been good for almost a year. I hadn’t thought about Keegan at all. But the second I saw him, everything came rushing back: love, want, muscle memory. And sleeping with him again, made it im

She was being very weird this morning. “How did you sleep Keegan?” She asked.“Fine mom. The guest room bed is way more comfortable than the one in my apartment,” he said, grabbing the creamer from the fridge. “How would you know? You didn’t sleep in it,” she said, looking at him over her glass. We both turned to look at her. I’m sure my jaw was on the ground. “Mom, don’t start this. Not this morning,” he pleaded. “I didn’t say anything. I just want you to stay focused with so much at hand this year. I don’t want you to fall back into whatever this is again,” she said. Did she think I was a risk to his career? It sure seemed like that’s what she was saying. I’ve always felt like she never wanted me and Keegan to be together. It always sat quietly in the back of my mind.“Mom, what I do with Brees is my business. Her and I have a lot to figure out, without you meddling,” he said.“Just looking out for you. I mean look at Casey. Is that how you want to end up? With a kid while you

We lay together all night. He rubbed my back as I lay on his chest. I hadn’t even put my clothes back on yet. I was soaking in the moment. I couldn’t believe after four years I was back in his arms. The sun was coming up and I knew our parents would be up soon.“Kee,” I whispered, kissing his chin, “We gotta get up.”He opened his eyes slightly and looked at me. His face lit up as he realized what had happened was real. He wrapped his arms around me and kissed the top of my head. “Just lie here with me a little while longer. I’ve never spent the night with you,” he said.I obliged. I wasn’t in a hurry to let him go either. We didn’t speak. We just held each other. There was a deafening silence that I couldn’t help but notice. What did last night mean for us? Would we try to make a relationship work? What about Haven and his brand deals? There were so many questions, but I pushed them all away so I could enjoy this moment. So,” he says, “Last night.”I let out a short breath that’s
