Chapter 4

Author: Heart Echo
The moment the screen refreshed, my fingers shook uncontrollably. I scrolled all the way to the bottom, tracing his posts back to the very beginning.

One of his earliest captions read, "I came to find her after all. Turns out, she never let go of me either."

Attached was a photo of two hands, fingers tightly intertwined beneath the night sky.

That day had been my birthday.

In our seven years together, Kate never missed sending me birthday wishes right on time. But that year, I sat holding my phone, watching the minutes tick away into the morning without a single word from her.

It wasn't until the next morning that she finally messaged me. "Happy birthday. Work was crazy yesterday. I completely lost track of time."

Swiping down, I found another photo.

Two silhouettes stretched long across the snow, bleeding into one another.

The caption read, "She told me that since I got here, the stars look beautiful to her again."

I remembered that day vividly, too. I had just operated on an HIV-positive patient, only to realize my surgical glove had torn.

As I waited for the lab results, my mind went entirely blank. Fighting back tears, I called Kate, desperate just to hear her voice, but she never picked up.

When the results came back negative, I slid down a hospital wall and wept in the corner before forcing myself back to patient rounds.

It turned out that she hadn't been busy. She was just looking at the stars with him.

Further up was a video.

Kate stood before the camera in her heavy research gear, flashing a radiant smile. She said, "Thanks for doing the interview with me today. There's a reward waiting for you tonight."

On that exact day, Rosalie had wandered off again. As her Alzheimer's advanced, she had completely lost her sense of direction.

When the news reached me, I was in the middle of a department meeting. I had to swallow my pride, raise my hand, and say I had a family emergency. My department chief's expression darkened, but he gave me the nod.

I spent five agonizing hours scouring the streets, searching until my vision went blurry from sheer exhaustion.

By the time I found Rosalie, brought her home, and bathed her, it was nearly midnight.

Later, I got a text from the chief. My unauthorized departure had cost me my entire bonus for the month.

My thumb moved mechanically, scrolling down the screen. Soon, I reached the latest update.

"It's her birthday today. The present I got her is going to make her knees go weak. Letting her unwrap it all night."

As I stared at the words, a crushing weight tightened around my chest until I couldn't breathe.

I pushed myself up, opened the door, and stumbled out into the hallway.

Leaning against the wall, I gasped for air. The biting chill of the corridor finally brought a semblance of relief.

When I looked up, Kate was standing a few feet away. She stared at me, rooted to the spot.

Slowly, she walked over and rasped, "What are you doing here?"

"I came to spend your birthday with you."

Kate's lips twitched into a strained, unnatural smile. She led me back to her room.

Nathan was already gone. But as my eyes scanned the room, I noticed a stray leather belt sitting on the vanity and the faint scent of cigarette smoke in the air.

The picture frame on the nightstand was missing.

It used to hold a photo of us from our senior year of high school. Two awkward teenagers leaning into each other, smiling shyly.

Now, the space was empty, covered with a thin layer of dust.

Suddenly, Kate darted to the bed, yanked something from beneath her pillow, and shoved it hastily into a drawer.

Her movement was lightning fast, but I caught it anyway. That was a tiny, flimsy scrap of black lace.

I looked down and said nothing.

That evening, we lit candles and cut the cake, trying to mimic the routines of our past.

She handed me the first slice. I took it and forced a bite.

As Kate ate, she rambled about life at the station. She said the polar night felt endless this year, the data was better than last winter's, and it wouldn't be long before she could transfer back home.

I listened, nodded, and offered quiet responses whenever needed.

It sounded just like any of our conversations over the last ten years.

Then, her phone buzzed. When Kate glanced down, her expression froze instantly. She shot a quick look at me and cut the call.

But the phone rang again, the tone echoing sharply in the quiet room.

"Why don't you answer it?" I asked.

"It's nothing. Just a spam call," she replied, casually pressing the reject button again.

It rang a third time. She gripped the phone tightly, a subtle panic flashing in her eyes.

"Just take it," I said quietly.

She hesitated for a beat before answering. When she hung up, she looked at me anxiously. "There's a batch of observation data that needs verification. It's pretty urgent…"

Noticing that I remained silent, she turned toward the door.

"Kate," I called out.

She stopped at the threshold.

I stared at the familiar silhouette of her back. "Can you stay?"

She didn't turn around. The silence stretched between us for a long time.

"Don't be ridiculous. It's for work," she said, her tone dismissive.

My voice was barely a whisper. "If you walk out that door, we're done."

The three years of my fellowship passed in the blink of an eye, fleeting as a dream.Spring arrived late in Nivora. Even though it was already April, the wind still carried a sharp, biting chill. As I stepped out of the operating room, my phone buzzed with a new notification."Dr. Harvey, congratulations on winning this year's Nivora Young Medical Scholar Award! The ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon."I stared at the screen for three seconds before slipping the phone back into my pocket. A genuine smile finally graced my lips.A sudden gust of wind swept through the corridor window, catching the hem of my white lab coat.As I smoothed it down, my mind flashed back to a summer afternoon many years ago.The breeze back then had felt just as warm. Except the person who shared it with me hadn't crossed my mind in a very long time. The weather on the day of the ceremony was perfect.Right before I was scheduled to go onstage, a friend from Cormora shared some news with m

Caught in a whirlwind of demanding hospital shifts and rigorous coursework, I simply had no time to dwell on my heartbreak.Occasionally, on my way to patient rounds, I would see couples leaning on each other in the hallways. A dull ache would flare up deep within my chest. But the very next second, a meeting notification would flash on my screen, and I'd hurry off to wherever I was needed next.I began to get used to this exhausting yet fulfilling lifestyle.Through the endless process of treating patients and saving lives, I discovered something far more grounding than romance.I knew some wounds could only heal on their own.And conveniently enough, I was a doctor. Kate stood in the snow for a long time before finally sinking onto a bench. Slowly, she buried her face in her hands. How had everything fallen apart like this? She still remembered the summer right after graduation. The AC in our tiny rented apartment had broken down, and the electric fan creaked and groaned all through the night. I had held her close, both of us drenched in sweat. With my eyes closed, I had suddenly spoken up. "Kate.""Yeah?""We're going to be together forever, right?"She had kissed my forehead. "Yes. I'll love you forever."Back then, she truly believed that spending a lifetime together was the simplest thing in the world. But later, she went to Althoria. On the day she left, I had come to see her off. My eyes had been red-rimmed, but I had stubbornly forced myself not to cry.I had told her, "Just focus on your work. I'll handle everything back home."And I kept his word.As Rosalie's condition deteriorated, I went over every single week to feed her,

Kate lowered her head. A long, heavy silence stretched between us.When she finally looked up again, her eyes were completely red. "I-I don't even know what to say."She paused, taking a ragged breath. "I admit it. I messed up. I was alone out there for too long. The polar nights are endless. You never see the sun. He was always there at the observatory, talking to me, keeping me company…"She trailed off."Ruben, I'm sorry," she pleaded, leaning toward me. "I really am. But I do love you. You know I do."Kate stared at my face, looking like a drowning person desperately clawing at a piece of driftwood."You can yell at me or hit me. Do whatever you want." She reached out, trying to take my hand.I pulled away. Her hand froze in midair for a couple of seconds before slowly pulling back.A pair of small birds landed on the snow nearby, chirping quietly to each other."I truly know I was wrong. Can we please just start over?" Kate's voice was incredibly raspy. "It was just a te

After a brief period of recovery, I immediately set off on a new journey. As the plane broke through the clouds, everything about that city shrank into the distance. Thanks to the success of my recent research project and the buzz surrounding my newly published paper, I had been awarded a fellowship at Nivora Medical Center. It was an opportunity I had dreamed of for years, but one I had repeatedly hesitated to take. After all, it meant studying abroad for three whole years. I had been too worried about Kate's upcoming return and too obsessed with safeguarding our stable future. How incredibly naive I had been.Over the years, I had nearly lost myself entirely trying to accommodate her. This time, I was going to live strictly for myself. The day I landed in Nivora, the weather was beautiful.Winters here were usually bleak and overcast, but I happened to catch a rare, sunlit day.Sunlight spilled over the colorful houses, the masts of fishing boats in the harbor, and the cobble

Kate stared out into the pitch-black night, feeling uneasy. There was a dull ache blossoming deep within her chest, but whenever she tried to pinpoint it, it slipped out of reach.Suddenly, a warm arm wrapped around her waist from behind."What are you daydreaming about?" Nathan asked, his voice low and seductive."Distracted even when you're with me?"Kate stiffened. "Let go."Nathan didn't let go. Instead, he pulled her closer. "What's wrong?"His hands drifted up, beginning to undo the buttons of her shirt. "I didn't just bring that one outfit for your birthday tonight. Don't you want to see what else I have?"Irritated, Kate pushed his hands away a second time.Nathan looked up at her, his expression instantly crumbling into a pout. "Kate, I followed you all the way to Althoria and endured all these grueling polar nights with you. What do you think I'm doing all this for? I just want to be with you."Nathan lowered his head, his voice softening into a whine. "I know I'm no
