Chapter 1

Alex's POV

I just moved to New York City. After just completing my PHD.

I know no where around this city. I haven't even settled in yet.

I'm excited but also kind of stressed out and anxious. After graduating from MIT a year early I immediately completed my undergrad degree and went into a PHD program which then led me back home to California to work in CIS which is a research institute for biological engineering. I then got a call from NYSCF; the New York Stem Cell Foundation a month ago asking if I would like to join them and continue a stem cell treatment I had worked on my PHD programme.

So I accepted the offer and moved here, thankfully my childhood best friend Mason lives here. I was practically glad to have Mason here in New York with me, we have lost a little touch over the years with him moving to New York immediately after college to work in his father's company Davis technologies.

I'm meeting Mason at a restaurant for dinner, he has been so helpful with the move and everything he even got me a place right in the building he lives so we're practically neighbors.

The drive to the restaurant was short, I thanked the driver before getting out of the car and walking in.

"Hello do you have a reservation?" The hostess asks me with a polite smile as I walk in stopping by her podium desk in the restaurant entrance.

"Yes I'm meeting someone, it should be under the name Mason Davis." I say to her while she checks through her book.

"Here it is, Mr Davis isn't here yet but let me show you to your table." She says as she walks me into the fancy restaurant.

"Would you like to order a drink before he gets here?" She asks as I settle in our table.

"No thank you, I'll wait for him." I say.

And suddenly I'm nervous, I haven't really seen Mason over the years since college practically. Our parents were best friends growing up so technically we became best friends too even though Mason is about 4 years older than me, he always treated me like his little sister while I always had a crush on him but that's another story for another time.

About 5 minutes later, Mason shows up flashing me his gorgeous beautiful smile instantly as he sees me.

"Alex!" He calls my name.

My head snapped up towards the sound of my name, and I did a double take as the man in question walked toward me. He was taller than I remembered, and had the type of body that was long and lean but also he had muscles that indicated he worked out and he can for sure carry up in his arms. There'd always been something about him, something magnetic and irresistible that was unrelated to classically symmetrical good looks.

I stand up and he engulfs me into a tight hug.

He grinned, stepping back as he looked me up and down. "You look . . . different, Alexis."

"Good different?" I ask blushing a little and silently scolding myself for blushing.

He continued to stare. He stared at my neck, at my lips, and then took time to inspect my eyes. The energy between us was palpable.

"Good different obviously, you look amazing Alex." He says with a smile and my insides somersaults at his words.

"I feel like I haven't seen you in years." He says as he watches me after we made our orders.

"Yeah me too, the last time I saw you was briefly Christmas like 2 years ago." I say.

"Yeah Christmas," he repeats with a smile.

"I'm so glad you are moving to New York, we can finally get to hang out like before." He adds.

"Yeah me too, I kind of missed you." I say with smile.

"Only kind of? C'mon Alexis say the truth, I know you missed me bad." He says smirking.

I laugh at that while I roll my eyes at him playfully.

"So how did you like your apartment?" He asks.

The whole building is actually owned by his family, when he heard I was moving he got me the place which I was particularly grateful I didn't have to go through apartment hunting.

"It's gorgeous, I haven't unpacked yet but I love it." I say with a smile.

"Great, I'll send my personal assistant to come help you unpack." Mason says with a smile.

"Really? No need, I'm kind of those weird people that like to unpack by themselves besides it's just my clothes and books." I explain.

"If you say so, I can help too." Mason says with a smile. "You're like a whole ass scientist now, I'm so proud of you." He adds which makes my heart wrench happy thoughts smiling at him.

"So when do you start work?" He adds again asking.

"Next week." I say with a sigh.

"Aren't you excited?" Mason asks noticing my non enthusiasm.

"I am, I'm just a little anxious." I explain.

"Don't worry you'll be fine, you're like the smartest person I know." He says reassuring me which eases my worry a bit making me smile.

"Thanks." I say feeling a little less awkward.

"We have this whole week to catch up, I feel like I know nothing about my best friend." Mason says. We were finally done eating and we're currently on our way home.

"Yeah we should definitely catch up, the only thing I know about you currently is what I hear from your mom." I say.

"Now we definitely must catch up, don't know what she has been telling you." Mason says. "Don't believe everything she tells you by the way." He adds with a sigh.

"Noted and also kind of intrigued." I say giving him a mysterious look.

"You know my mom, she likes to exaggerate. Also, tomorrow breakfast at my place, I'll come get you." He adds as we enter the elevator.

When we reach my floor, he hugs me before he says goodbye and goes up to his floor.

Immediately I enter my apartment, I dial my best friend Jessica technically my only friend back home.

"I miss you already," she says answering the phone.

"I miss you too." I say.

"So? How do you like New York so far? "How's Mason? Is he still so hot and yummy?" She asks ranting.

"Well I haven't really been out, just went to dinner with Mason. And to answer your question he's still so hot and yummy." I say sighing.

"I'm so jealous of you, you two should date." Jessica says and I can hear the excitement in her voice.

"Jess you know we're just friends, beside Mason thinks of me as he little sister." I say sighing.

"No he does not, he's just protective of you. I'm sure he knows how gorgeous you are, have you seen you Alex. You're such a gorgeous babe, you just have to let him know that." Jessica explains.

"No thank you, Mason is gorgeous and amazing but we have an amazing friendship and I don't want to lose that." I say as my heart tightens. "Plus we have kind of lost touch so it's kind of good to have him in my life again so I shouldn't mess anything up." I add.

"Well you should settle in so we can find you a NewYorker boyfriend then." Jess squeals.

I probably won't even have time for dating, I start work next week and I'm going to be very busy but I don't tell Jessica that, her main thrill in life is match making.

"I'm jet lagged, I should probably turn in now. Talk to you later." I say.

"Okay, I love you." She says before ending the call.

I sigh walking through my apartment, it's so chic and beautiful even with my millions of luggage all around. It's the kind of apartment Blair Waldorf would have, it also has a great view of the city and God everything is absolutely stunning though I do not particularly enjoy the noise.

I have lived in Los angelos basically all my life. Grew up in Beverly Hills which wasn't particularly noisy and I don't think there's actually a place noisier than New York.

But I have a feeling I'm going to like it here.
