I'm the fool, just like everyone calls me, the outcast, the one who isn't good enough to attend any special functions except today there's an exception and I'm here serving wine and food and also cleaning up after Sofia my cousin. The music was playing in the background song, so far I had made five trips back to the kitchen, two loads of slaps from Sofia and her mother. It's Sofia's wedding day to no other person but my mate, my own mate. What other thing is worst then heartbreak than this. “Come here,” Clarrissa, my aunt dragged me to the corner behind the kitchen and there was Sofia, pacing, her eyes filled with hatred for me. “You will abort that thing in your womb.” She snarled. “No,” I said in a small voice. “I can't have you ruin my marriage you twerp.” She said and slapped me. “Drake is my mate.” I sobbed, tears falling from my eyes. “He is mine now and I don't want anyone to find out that you are pregnant for him.” She said through gritted teeth. I shook my head slowly, my tears staining my cheeks. “You…you…” “Look here you cheap slut,” Clarrissa yelled, turning my head to face her and digging her talon like nails into my cheeks almost drawing out blood. “ You will do as my daughter said.” “This is my pup….my first child. I can't do this.” I begged. She came closer and her voice lessen to a conspiratorial whisper. “ And that's why you have to do it sweetheart, who says you can't have any child….” She smiled and looked at her daughter. “... With any man you so desires, you are good in opening your legs.” I gasped and look up at her. “ You said after the marriage I'll —” “And I'm saying Plan B is in motion. Things have changed child. You will take the child out a pill will do it. Clean and fast.” My heart was thumbing in my chest. Aunt Clarissa had said I get to keep the baby and tell Drake later after the marriage. I had found out I was pregnant three weeks ago and this marriage….this marriage was supposed to be mine but I had been labeled a thief two nights ago and Drake had chosen Sofia because she had seduced him and slept with him. “And oh, I forgot to tell you, I and Drake had been having sex for a long time and I'm expecting his twins.” She said as if reading my thoughts and rubbing her stomach. The door opened and Doctor Every walked in and I gasped. I should have known. She told them about my pregnancy. “Take this and flush that thing from your stomach.” Clarrissa said taking the small bottle and squeezed it into my palms. “Even a drop will flush it and you get to attend the marriage ceremony.” I stared at the small bottle shaking in my palm. The bitter taste of fear filled my mouth even before I drank it. Tears kept falling freely, burning my cheeks. I wanted to say no, I wanted to fight, but Aunt Clarissa’s cold voice froze me. “You have no choice, Layla. Take this, and this nightmare will end. Refuse, and we will let everyone know what a liar you are.” Her words dug into me like sharp knives. “What do you mean?” I asked, voice trembling. Clarissa’s eyes darkened with hatred. “We will say you slept with Drake’s stepbrother when he visited. We will say you are a liar, a cheat. And if that’s not enough, that you killed Drake’s grandfather.” She spat the last words like poison. I gasped. My heart pounded like a drum in my chest. I never did any of those things! But to them... to everyone else, who would believe me? I was just Layla — the fool, the outcast. No one would stand by me. Sofia and her mother laughed softly, their smiles cruel and full of victory. “You see, Layla,” Sofia said, her voice ice cold, “this is how the world sees you. They’ll believe us before they believe the likes of you.” I shook my head, desperate, tears blurring my vision. “I’m not lying. I’m pregnant with Drake’s child… please, don’t make me do this.” Clarissa stepped closer, her nails digging lightly into my cheeks again, making me flinch. “You think you can keep that baby? You’re just a mistake, Layla. A shame in our family.” “But it’s my child,” I whispered, clinging to whatever courage I had left. She smiled cruelly. “Plan B is better. Clean and fast. A pill, and you no longer ruin Sofia’s perfect day.” She dropped the empty threat in my palm again—the small bottle. My hands trembled uncontrollably as I held it. My head spun, mind desperate for a way out. And just then, the door slammed open. Two guards stepped inside, their faces stern and unreadable. One held a folded piece of paper. The air around me instantly changed—hope and fear battling inside. “Layla,” one guard began, reading the order aloud, “by order of the Alpha, you are under arrest. You must come with us now.” Arrest? My breath caught in my throat. “For what?” I whispered, voice nearly broken. The guards exchanged glances but said nothing more. Behind me, Sofia’s face was lit with a victorious smile. Clarissa’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction like they’d just won a game. They said nothing, but their cruel expressions spoke volumes. It wasn’t about the truth. It was about making me suffer. I looked down at the bottle still in my hand, then back at the guards. I was caught, trapped in their web of lies and cruelty. My sobs sounded hollow, like echoes in a cage. They reached for my arms, firm but not cruel. I let them lead me out, heart heavy and mind numb. As the door closed behind me, I heard Sofia’s soft laugh and Clarissa’s proud whisper.LAYLA Three years have gone by. Three years of power, pain and achievement.I still find it hard to believe how far we've come, sometimes, especially when I wake up to Adrielle's laughter reverberating down the hallway or feel Del's arms encircling me before the sun comes up. It feels unreal like waking up in a life that I was previously forbidden to have. After the truth was revealed after Kaelan and Faelan were engulfed by the very shadows they once controlled and after their own greed destroyed them, I did more than simply survive. I remembered how they had paid for their crimes, Kaelan had drunk poison, too proud to go to jail like his brother.Aurelia was never seen again, she just vanished.I never went back to the girl who had pleaded to be heard and seen. They couldn't stop me from returning like a storm. I didn't stop there either. I reshaped what they had burned, not just rebuilt it.All of the laws, customs and walls that once made me feel less than were destroyed and re
LAYLA Aurelia was standing before me. She wasn't looking arrogant or smiling wickedly at me. She simply looks tired. Of what ?She sniffed and that was when I realized that she was crying too. Was this staged or something? Another of her stupid plans? How did she find me here? Her typically bold and sharp makeup was hardly visible. She appeared to have been crying for days because of the swollen red and puffy lids on her eyes. I remained motionless.with a wet cloth in one hand and my heart pounding in my ears.Neither the queen nor rival was making an entrance. This was a completely different matter. Aurelia took one trembling breath before falling to her knees before me on Mama Dena's creaking wooden floor.“I came to say I'm sorry.” She said in a whisper. My heart beat erratically. I was silent at first. I asked the only question I could think of.“What do you want?” I said in a low voice“To tell you the truth,” She replied in a raw voice. With wet lashes and glossy eyes she g
LAYLA I couldn't remember who came to my rescue. I had fainted from the cold that night in the blizzard following Adrielle's kidnap. With my body too weak to move, I had encircled my body with my arms. Half of my body, buried by snow. In the distance, I could hear wolves howling—low foreboding cries that rose and fell and in my unconsciousness I was wondering if they had come for me too.My breath had been coming in quick frantic gasps until it stopped. Then it was just cold. Then nothing happened. I was rescued though. Someone with powerful arms carefully lifted me out of the snow moving quietly and I didn't know why they chose to help me.“You’re safe now,” someone whispered as they wrapped me softly in thick furs and used trembling hands to brush ice from my face. Their faces were hidden from me. And I felt just warmth. Only safety. I recognized the voice but I trusted it out of instinct. The first thing that hit me with the pain, a stupid headache and I was wishing I had died
DELThe room was quiet, in fact the whole pack was quiet, just the way I wanted it. The quietness meant they I was getting ready to unleash my anger I was planning something that would make my enemies cry, one for which the components had been gathered over several months. And her face appeared each time I closed my eyes. Layla. The night I sent her away her eyes. The disbelief, the suffering. She must have felt so betrayed by this. I had allowed it to happen because I was unaware at the time. But now I did. It hadn't been a sudden revelation. Drop by painful drop, the poison had slowly seeped in. A maid, too inquisitive for her own good, had come to me and I had rewarded her just as we had planned and now she was far away, safe where they wouldn't find her.I had gotten a letter which had all the evidence I needed. A former guard who disappeared after Aurelia revealed she was pregnant reappeared months later, bruised half-mad and eager to tell what he knew. I didn't initially b
AURELIA Soon, it would be time and everything I desired would be mine. I smiled, sipping from my glass as father and his brother discussed. The wine's warmth melted into my throat as it moved down my throat. However, I continued to stare at the door. Holding my breath.Immediately after the door creaked open the room changed. The atmosphere shifted. They'd succeeded. Two men dressed in heavy wet furs came in. Everyone in the room gasped. From the bundle, a tiny muffled cry leaked out. My heart pounded. I stood up. I was afraid not because of the men or the cry but because it was perfect now. Everything was perfect now.Now the sweet plan we had woven together laced with deception and hidden motives was breathing for the first time. The bundle was gently placed in the cradle I had set up in the far corner of the room by the man who stepped forward. Royal crests carved into ivory wood with the finest silks lining the base befitting a princess. My princess. Holding hands behind
LAYLA The fire had long since subsided. The only sound left was the crackle of the final ember fighting for air in a frigid room. Adrielle was nestled against my chest as I sat there bundled up in whatever warmth I could find including the hem of my own dress, my cloak and a ragged fur. I was unaware that I had strength until her tiny breaths puffed softly against my skin, the rhythm of her frail life. The storm had slowed down outside. The thick strange silence that followed chaos filled the room and it seemed as though the world was holding its breath. And then I heard it. A pinch. Boots on snow. I went cold. One more step this time closer. And further. Multiple sets.m, consciously and heavy. I knew instantly that something wasn't right. I gasped. My arms automatically clenched around my daughter. After a sharp kick the front door which was barely supported by its rusted hinges shook and then flew open.Shadows appeared as the wind screamed into the space. A trio of them, f
