The silence that settled over Vance’s executive office after Arthur’s departure was thick enough to choke on.
Kaelen remained frozen in his leather chair, the lingering heat of Vance’s hand still humming against the side of his neck. His pulse hammered against his ribs in sharp, erratic thuds, making it hard to draw a full breath. He stared up into Vance’s hazel eyes, searching the dark, unyielding depths for a sign of hesitation, a flicker of the arrogant, mocking stepbrother he had spent six years trying to endure.
There was none. Only a terrifying, absolute gravity.
"Let go of me," Kaelen whispered, though the demand lacked its usual sharp edge. His voice sounded soft, almost breathless in the vast, soundproof room.
Vance didn't release him immediately. His thumb stroked over Kaelen’s jawline one last time, a slow, agonizingly deliberate drag of calloused skin, before his hand dropped to his side. He stepped back, restoring a few inches of space between them, though his presence continued to command every corner of the room.
"Get back to the shipping ledgers, Kaelen," Vance said, his tone shifting effortlessly back to that cold, smooth executive register. "We have twenty minutes before the board meeting, and I expect those discrepancies to be highlighted."
Kaelen swallowed the lump in his throat, forcing his eyes down to the glass desk. His hands were shaking so noticeably that he had to press his palms flat against the cool surface for a moment before picking up his pen. Across from him, Vance settled back into his leather armchair, completely unbothered, clicking through files on his tablet as if he hadn't just stood up to the patriarch of a multi-billion-dollar empire for the sake of a captive.
For the next two hours, Kaelen sat through a masterclass in corporate warfare.
When Vance led him into Conference Room A, the tension was palpable. A dozen senior executives and board members sat around a massive oval table crafted from dark walnut. Arthur sat at the far end, his heavy silver cane resting against his chair, his expression an impenetrable mask of stone.
Kaelen took his place at a small side table directly behind Vance, pulling out his notepad as instructed. Throughout the presentation, as Vance dismantled a proposed merger with surgical precision and commanded the room with effortless authority, Kaelen felt the subtle, persistent weight of eyes on him.
It wasn't just Arthur’s cold disgust. Several board members cast curious, lingering glances at Kaelen, clearly wondering why the disgraced stepbrother, rumored to have been dragged into headquarters as a disciplinary measure, was sitting within arm's reach of the company's ruthless heir, wearing an immaculate bespoke suit that cost more than a mid-level manager's monthly salary.
Whenever Kaelen shifted uncomfortably under the scrutiny, Vance would subtly shift his posture, broadening his shoulders, leaning back just enough to block Arthur’s line of sight, or casting a sharp, warning glance across the table that silenced any quiet muttering among the executives.
By the time the meeting adjourned at three in the afternoon, Kaelen’s head was pounding.
The drive back to the penthouse was conducted in heavy, charged silence.
As the matte-black sports car glided through the underground garage gate and came to a stop in Vance’s private bay, Kaelen unbuckled his seatbelt immediately, desperate to put distance between himself and the man sitting in the driver's seat.
"Where do you think you're going?" Vance asked, his voice low as he cut the engine.
"To my room," Kaelen said, his hand on the door handle. "I’m exhausted, I’ve read five hundred pages of shipping manifests, and I want to take off this tie."
"You don't go anywhere until I tell you to, Kae," Vance said softly. The central lock clicked with a sharp, heavy thud.
Kaelen turned his head, a flare of anger breaking through his fatigue. "We are in your private garage, Vance. There are no board members here. No Arthur. You don't need to play the possessive warden right now."
"I don't 'play' anything," Vance said, unbuckling his belt and turning his body toward Kaelen. In the dim lighting of the subterranean garage, his eyes looked dark, almost amber. "You signed the contract, little bird. Thirty days of absolute compliance. Did you think that meant you only answer to me between nine and five?"
Kaelen’s jaw locked. "I worked eight hours for you today. I did everything you demanded."
"And you did it remarkably well," Vance murmured, reaching out. His long fingers caught the knot of Kaelen’s silk tie, loosening it with two slow, practiced tugs before unbuttoning the top two buttons of Kaelen’s shirt. His knuckles brushed against the sensitive dip of Kaelen’s collarbone, making Kaelen stiffen. "Which is why you get rewarded."
"I don't want your rewards," Kaelen breathed, his eyes locked onto Vance’s lips.
"Lie again," Vance purred, his grip on the loosened tie tightening just enough to pull Kaelen forward across the leather console. "I watched you in that conference room, Kae. Every time Arthur looked at you like you were garbage, you leaned into my shadow. Every time a board member stared, you looked at the back of my neck for protection. You like belonging to me. It terrifies you, but you crave it."
"You're arrogant," Kaelen choked out, though his chest was rising and falling in rapid, shallow hitches. The proximity was overwhelming, the heat radiating off Vance’s broad frame, the scent of expensive bourbon and amber lingering on his skin. "You set me up. You made Arthur think I was a thief just so you could leash me!"
"I leashed you so Arthur’s syndicate lieutenants wouldn't put a bullet in your spine," Vance snarled softly, his tone dropping into a dark, lethal register. His hand moved from the tie to the back of Kaelen’s neck, his fingers entangling in the soft, dark hair at his nape, holding him flush against his chest. "Do you have any idea what kind of men were coming for you at The Obsidian Vault? Do you think they were going to give you a contract? They would have dragged you into a basement and used you until there was nothing left."
Kaelen’s breath caught in his throat. The memory of the gunshots echoing through the club’s crimson hallway flashed through his mind, cold and terrifying.
"I am the only thing standing between you and the grave, Kaelen," Vance whispered, his lips grazing the shell of Kaelen’s ear. "Remember that the next time you feel like fighting me."
Vance released his grip and unlocked the doors. "Upstairs. Now."
The penthouse was silent when they stepped out of the elevator.
Kaelen didn't wait for further instructions. He walked straight down the hallway toward the guest suite, stripping off his suit jacket as he went. He tossed the jacket onto the leather armchair, unbuttoned his cuffs, and reached for the door handle.
It didn't budge.
Kaelen frowned, jiggling the stainless steel handle. Locked.
"Looking for something?"
Vance stood at the end of the corridor, leaning casually against the doorframe of the master suite. He had already shed his navy suit vest, his white dress shirt unbuttoned halfway down his chest, exposing tanned, hard muscle. In his hand, he casually flipped a small electronic keycard.
"Why is the guest room locked?" Kaelen demanded, walking back down the hall toward him.
"Because you don't sleep in the guest room anymore," Vance said smoothly.
Kaelen stopped three feet short of him, his eyes widening. "We agreed…"
"We agreed to thirty days," Vance interrupted, his tone leaving no room for negotiation. "Last night was an exception because you looked like you were going to faint. Today, your training begins."
"Training?!" Kaelen gasped, incredulous. "I am not an animal, Vance!"
"No," Vance agreed, stepping forward until he closed the distance between them, towering over Kaelen. "Animals have survival instincts. You walked blindfolded into a dark kink club with zero protection. You need to be taught how to yield properly before your stubbornness gets you killed."
Vance reached out, grabbing Kaelen’s wrist and pulling him firmly through the double doors of the master suite.
The master bedroom was massive, twice the size of the guest room. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking, panoramic view of the glowing city below. A colossal king-sized bed draped in deep charcoal silk sat atop a raised platform in the center of the room. The air inside smelled distinctly of Vance, cedar, rain, and raw power.
"This is ridiculous," Kaelen said, trying to pull his arm back, but Vance’s grip was like an iron shackle. "I am not sleeping in your bed!"
"You're not sleeping yet," Vance said softly.
He pulled Kaelen toward the center of the room, turning him around until Kaelen’s back was pressed against his chest. Vance reached down with his free hand, unbuckling his own leather belt with a sharp clink that echoed loudly in the quiet room.
Kaelen’s heart slammed against his sternum. "Vance…"
"Quiet," Vance commanded softly against his ear.
He didn't use the belt as a weapon. Instead, Vance wrapped the dark leather smooth around Kaelen’s wrists, binding them firmly together in front of his waist. He secured the buckle with practiced, effortless efficiency, pinning Kaelen’s hands together.
"What are you doing?!" Kaelen panicked, twisting against Vance’s hold, but the leather bound his wrists tight.
"Setting boundaries," Vance murmured, his broad hands sliding up Kaelen’s waist, pulling Kaelen backward until his spine was curved flush against Vance’s chest. Vance’s face dipped into the crook of Kaelen’s neck, his warm lips pressing a slow, heavy kiss against the pulse point fluttering wildly beneath the skin.
Kaelen let out a sharp, breathless gasp. The sensation was explosive, the contrast between the cool leather binding his wrists and the searing, possessive heat of Vance’s lips against his throat made a wave of intense, liquid heat pool straight into his stomach.
"You spend all day fighting me with your words, Kae," Vance whispered, his teeth lightly grazing Kaelen’s neck, making Kaelen’s knees buckle slightly. Vance caught him easily, his arm wrapping like a steel bar around Kaelen’s waist to hold him upright. "So tonight, we take your words away."
"Vance... please..." Kaelen whimpered, his head falling back against Vance’s shoulder, his eyes closing as he fought the overwhelming, intoxicating wave of physical pleasure washing over him.
"Please what?" Vance purred, his hand sliding down Kaelen’s stomach, his fingers pressing possessively into his hip. "Please stop? Or please don't leave me alone in the dark?"
Kaelen couldn't answer. His throat was too tight, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. He hated how easily Vance dismantled his defenses. He hated that after years of cold glares and biting insults across the Sterling dining table, the touch of Vance’s hands felt like the only thing tethering him to reality.
Vance slowly guided Kaelen over to the massive bed, pushing him down onto the soft charcoal silk. Kaelen fell back, his bound wrists resting against his stomach, his dark hair fan out against the pillows as he looked up at his stepbrother.
Vance stood over the bed, his hazel eyes burning with a dark, unhinged satisfaction. He reached up, slowly unbuttoning the rest of his white shirt and stripping it off, exposing a sculpted, powerful torso lined with faint, pale scars, remnants of a life Kaelen was only beginning to realize Vance lived in the shadows.
Vance climbed onto the bed, crawling over Kaelen like a dark predator, pinning Kaelen’s legs beneath his weight.
"Thirty days, Kaelen," Vance whispered, leaning down until his lips were a hair's breadth from Kaelen’s. "By the time this contract is over, you won't even remember what it felt like to belong to anyone else."
Vance reached out, his long fingers cupping Kaelen’s chin, and brought his mouth down onto Kaelen’s in a deep, possessive, excruciatingly steamy kiss that consumed every last drop of Kaelen’s resistance.
