The next morning, when Celine awoke, Roman was lying on the couch, facing her, sound asleep. His arm was slung over the top of her torso and he was snoring gently into her shoulder. He looked peaceful as his eyebrows were relaxed and his mouth hung slightly open. For a split second, he looked younger and less exhausted than he usually did. His hair was disheveled, sticking out at odd angles and there was an obvious flush on his face due to the heat radiating from the heater. Her heart fluttered in her chest at the sight. Roman sat down at the other end of the counter, turning his head so that his eyes were looking up at her. He had a soft smile on his face and she was unable to avoid smiling back. Slowly and cautiously, he moved his gaze toward the direction that he thought he had seen the source of the noise coming from. And suddenly, he realized that the source of the sound had been Celine’s hand. She was clutching her left hand tightly in both of hers and she had begun rocking herself back and forth in a small circle. The movements weren’t violent, though, but rather rhythmic, and were definitely something that Roman recognized as something she frequently did when she was upset.It wasn’t that Roman was surprised that Celine was having trouble sleeping or that he was worried that she might be feeling uncomfortable. But what shocked him was that she was apparently doing it in the middle of the night instead of at the usual hour when he would normally be waking her up to ask her if she needed anything.
