"What are you doing?" Belle sounded defensive.

"We need to talk."

"I don’t want to talk to you anymore!"

Belle went to open the door, but Bastian quickly gripped her shoulders. He shoved her back against the wall, trapping her so she couldn’t move.

His warm breath brushed against Belle’s face, making her uncomfortable. They were way too close.

Belle immediately lowered her gaze, avoiding Bastian’s eyes. She was so tense she bit down hard on her lower lip.

"Why, Belle?" Bastian asked.

Another question. Bastian always threw out questions like bait, and she always had to answer. Belle hated it, as if she were being interrogated.

"I told you, I don’t want anything to do with you!" she finally snapped.

"You never see your brother. You avoid everything, don’t you realize that hurts Anthony?"

"Does he realize he hurt me?"

"Anthony is just trying to protect you!"

"I don’t need any protection! I’m grown up, I can take responsibility for my own actions!"

Belle’s feelings were torn apart. On one hand, she was deeply moved by Bastian’s struggle. But on the other hand, her logic kept pressing down on her. Was she really willing to watch Bastian get beaten bloody just to chase happiness with her?It was already clear that Bastian would marry Renee, that he had a future perfectly laid out for him. He would be happier living a more settled life.So what exactly was Bastian fighting for because of Belle?Nothing but suffering on his side; more pain, more wounds. Belle was not worth being fought for with sweat and blood. She didn’t want to hurt Bastian any further.“No,” Belle whispered softly. She pulled away from him quickly, even though it felt unbearably heavy. Belle shook her head weakly, swallowing the bitterness in her throat. What she was about to ask would hurt even more.“Go home, Bastian. Stop fighting. End it here,” Belle said.Bastian froze. He hadn’t expected those words from her. Hadn’t they promised to fight for each other, no

  • Owned by the Fighter   46. What He Fights For

A message came in on Belle’s phone. She had just been about to go to sleep when she turned the light back on. Belle reached for her phone on the nightstand, unlocked the screen, and saw a message from Eve.“Did you know Bastian is fighting tonight?” Another message followed almost immediately.“He’s lost his mind. Won’t that cause trouble with his girlfriend?”Seeing the word girlfriend made Belle sink again. Whatever was going on between Bastian and Renee was not Belle’s concern, no matter how anxious she felt about him doing something this reckless.“That’s their problem,” Belle replied.“Yeah, you’re right. I don’t even know why I sent such a cringe message. You’ve both moved on with your own lives.”Belle sent back a thumbs-up emoji and placed the phone back on the nightstand. But her thoughts didn’t stop there. Anxiety crept in, making her restless.“Ah, damn it,” Belle muttered. She pushed the blanket aside and hurried to the wardrobe. Belle changed out of her pajamas and start

  • Owned by the Fighter   45. Debt That Feels Like Prison

Bastian let out a long breath as he stood in front of the grand apartment building. Starting that day, he would be moving into Renee’s apartment and living the normal life Renee and her family wanted for him.The day after tomorrow, Bastian would begin working as a new employee at Renee’s father’s company. He did not even know what position he would hold yet. All he knew was that he would be working, and that fact alone made him feel even more uneasy. It felt as if Bastian had signed a forced agreement. Renee had saved him from the threat of prison, but now it felt no different. He had walked out of one set of iron bars only to step into another kind of confinement.“Bastian?”Renee’s voice snapped him out of his thoughts.“Yeah?” Bastian turned around.“Come on, let’s bring your things inside. I’ll ask the security guards to help with the rest.”“No need. I can handle it myself.”Bastian did not have much to bring anyway. Just one suitcase and three medium-sized boxes. There was no p

A surge of desperate longing washed over Belle and Bastian, making them forget about time entirely. They ignored everything that stood in their way. Their kisses grew wilder, hotter, tangled with hunger and need.Bastian’s hands roamed over Belle’s body, squeezing her in the most sensitive places, pulling soft moans of pleasure from her. But it still wasn’t enough. They both wanted more—until the sound of a door opening downstairs sliced through the moment.Belle and Bastian jolted apart. Bastian rushed to his feet and tugged Belle up onto the bed. Belle’s hands flew to her messy hair, trying to tame it.“Bastian?” Anthony’s voice echoed from below. Then came the sound of footsteps climbing the stairs, growing louder until Belle’s older brother appeared at the doorway. Anthony froze, startled to see Belle there.“What are you doing here?” Anthony asked, not suspicious, but concerned. “You could get into trouble if Dad finds out you came here, Belle.”Belle stared blankly at him. “You’

Eve shook her head more firmly this time as soon as Belle stepped out of her car.“Don’t tell Anthony anything. You will ruin a decade-long friendship, Belle. Remember that,” Eve warned.Belle nodded. “Okay, I won’t say anything.”“If Bastian isn’t there, you should go home right away. You could get in trouble again if you go against your father.”“I understand, Eve.” Belle nodded again. “Thank you for the ride.”After saying goodbye, Eve drove off from the front of Anthony’s shop. She actually wanted to stay and keep Belle company, but she held herself back. Eve didn’t want Belle to be even more restricted by Mr. Watson. At the very least, Eve wanted the situation to cool down. It was not wise to stir up water that was already muddy.Standing at the side of the road, Belle kept watching Eve’s car as it moved farther and farther away. Once it turned and disappeared from sight, Belle finally stepped into Anthony’s shop. The sign on the window said “Closed,” but the door wasn’t locked.

Seeing Eve run toward her, the emotions overflowing in Belle’s chest finally broke loose. Belle immediately threw her arms around Eve and burst into tears. Eve cried too, gently stroking Belle’s hair with affection.“Thank God you’re okay,” Eve whispered.Neither of them paid attention to the confused looks from the students passing by. No one knew what had happened to Belle. Everything had been tightly covered up by the Felix family. Renee’s family also played a role, so Bastian wouldn’t be exposed as a criminal. The case was shut down immediately. But the trauma inside Belle would linger forever. And now her heart shattered even more after hearing that Bastian was getting married.“I heard everything, Belle. This is so messed up.” Eve took a deep breath, tears already pooling in the corners of her eyes. “I’m sorry you had to go through all this.”“I don’t know what to do,” Belle sobbed helplessly.“It’s okay, Belle. Everything will be alright. What matters is you’re healthy and not
