#Chapter Three My New Owner

The man led me gently by the leash across the bridge, the guards allowing us to enter without further questions. It was odd the way they dipped their chins as we passed, covered in armor from head to toe, but it was even stranger when the man led us around the side of the castle rather than enter through the front, where the other guests awaited inside.

It was forbidden to ask nobility questions, so I kept my mouth shut as I admired the ancient building before me. This castle was centuries old, belonging to the oldest known vampire family. The older the family, the higher their rank and power. Vampires of nobility were less reliant on blood and could remain in the sunlight completely unbothered, as the power running through their veins was stronger than most.

The man opened a side door that creaked on its hinges, dust fanning around us as he pulled me through. To the right, a small room awaited us. It was a simple sitting room with two velvet couches, an ornate rug, and vases with roses filling the coffee table.

“You need to undress,” he said, removing the collar from my neck.

My body stilled before I slowly turned to face him. Disobeying an order from nobility was akin to a dog being put down after biting a human. It was a death sentence, and yet, I couldn’t stop myself from asking, “This is what you brought me here for? To oggle me naked?”

The man scoffed as if he were offended. “It is standard procedure to conduct a health assessment on a pet I am considering to purchase. They taught you that in the orphanage, did they not?”

Steeling my spine, it was an effort to keep my knees from buckling. This man was interested in buying me as a pet. He wanted to become my owner, and I…

Well, it was either him or the other nobility that Mr. Cliff claimed was interested, and at least this man didn’t beat me for speaking my mind.

“I assure you, this is for your health and not for my benefit.”

It was an effort not to flinch at his blatant disinterest in my appearance, but it wasn’t anything I hadn’t heard before. The moment I undressed, it would only further his disapproval, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he changed his mind on purchasing me after analyzing the scars that peppered my flesh beneath the dress.

“It is against the rules to undress for another man until the one who first staked a claim in purchasing me has the chance to view me.”

The man leaned against the wall with an arrogant smile, crossing one foot over the other. “I’m not worried about the rules.”

“You should be,” I replied. “You’ll get beheaded for disobeying the royal family.”

Picking a piece of lint from his shirt, totally unbothered, he said, “I’ll take it up with the royal family if they have any issues with my choices. Now strip.”

My eyes shot to his, the demand sending a shockwave between my thighs that I wasn’t anticipating. It wasn’t like he meant it sexually, but the way it sounded coming off his tongue was…

His nostrils flared in irritation before he averted his gaze to the wall. “I am having a new gown delivered for you to change into for the Selection. You need to undress so I can inspect you. Nothing more.”

With shaky fingers, I shimmied out of the shabby dress and let it drop around my ankles.

I was skin and bones, my hipbones jutting out in an unhealthy way from the starvation I had endured at the orphanage. Scars from the lashings and deep bruises decorated my body, the man’s eyes narrowing as he inspected each one. My breasts were small, only enough for a handful, and from the gossip I’d overheard from the other girls in the orphanage, they desired more.

“Who did this to you?”

The cold, icy tone of his voice raised the hair on my arms. He was behind me now, so that could only mean he had discovered the open wounds on my back.

“M-Mr. Cliff,” I stuttered. “When he’s in a bad mood, he takes it out on me. He claims I’m disobedient. I…” Swallowing thickly, I attempted to hold back the tears. “I’m worthless, so I am treated as such.”

The silence that followed was almost too much to bear, but eventually, the man released a deep sigh and came around to face me again, pointing to the dress around my ankles. “Get dressed. I will have a member of staff tend to your wounds immediately. We need to heal those first before you are dressed in anything where blood may transfer.” He reached for the door handle before glancing over his shoulder and adding, “As my pet, you are required to keep yourself clean, and that includes refraining from any injuries. If one is elicited upon you by anyone, you are to report to me immediately. Is that understood?”

Member of the staff?

All I could do was nod before he disappeared and shut the door behind him. After being at the orphanage for so long, I never imagined a life outside of the abuse and misery Mr. Cliff provided, but now all of that was about to change.

Not that becoming a pet was any better. It was like jumping from one sinking ship to another. Regardless of the way I looked at it, I was still serving someone, whether that was Mr. Cliff or this man, whatever his name was.

He still hadn’t told me.

After a few moments, the door opened, and a woman with large hips and a round, cheerful face stepped into the room with a gown grasped in one hand and a tin of salve in the other.

The woman, who introduced herself as Janine, instructed me to remove my gown again, and like the obedient pet I’d officially become, I did as I was told.

I was instructed to wait on the castle grounds for my new owner to rejoin me. My gown was crafted of red silk, with a tight-fitting bodice and an A-line skirt. It was the nicest dress I had ever worn, and with the salve added to my wounds, they didn’t sting anymore, so the fabric felt like a gentle caress.

My new owner had allowed me to wait for him without any security. I didn’t understand why he had so much trust in me that I wouldn’t run at the first chance I got in an attempt to escape. Then again, with the castle rise surrounded by guards, I doubt I’d get ten feet before being beheaded for treason.

Suddenly, a large hand gripped my upper arm, squeezing to the point of leaving a permanent bruise. “Where the hell have you been?” Mr. Cliff sneered in disgust, whirling me to face him. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you! Do you understand how much money is on the line for your worthless life? You should feel honored he offered even a penny for your body.”

My face paled, and although I knew I’d be reprimanded for replying, I still tried to defend myself. “I—I didn’t! Someone found me, and he—”

The smack of his hand against my cheek caused me to bite my tongue so hard I feared it’d bleed. Mr. Cliff glared at my new gown in disgust. “What were you attempting to do? Steal a dress to pass as nobility and escape? You look like a whore. An undesirable one at that.”

Tears pricked my eyes as he forcefully dragged me away. “Your new owner is impatient, and I’ll be damned if I lose out on this money.”

Dorian brought me into his bathroom and set me on top of the counter by the sink, his eyes focusing on the drops of blood from my nose that had accidentally landed on his suit jacket. With crimson-colored irises, he quickly stripped the jacket off, nostrils flaring when he tossed it to the other side of the room. It left him in a white dress shirt, the buttons straining against his deep breaths.“I…I need you to put this against your nose,” he ordered, holding out a towel. “Stop the bleeding.”I held the towel to my nose, watching as Dorian began to pace the length of the bathroom. His hands tugged at the ends of his hair, the slicked strands now sticking up haphazardly in an alluring way. Dorian looked wild, utterly feral for a reason I couldn’t understand. Was he that furious with me?Was he attempting to restrain himself from punishing me?“If you need to, I’ll understand,” I finally whispered, allowing my eyes to fall to the tiled floor.Dorian stilled his movements. “What are you

I stared at the woman who insulted me, shocked that she even dared to say that when she had to be aware I was the prince’s pet. Anyone who insulted me insulted him, and Dorian was clear he wouldn’t stand for it.Maybe that’s why I found the backbone to say, “Why can’t I be here?”My response prompted her to raise a perfectly plucked eyebrow. “I’m Olivia,” she declared, like her name should have meant something to me. “My master is the Vampire Prince. He won’t allow a pet like you to remain at the banquet once he sees you.”I blinked a few times to ensure that I heard her correctly. I hadn’t seen her since I arrived at the palace. To my knowledge, I was the prince’s first pet, so was there another prince? Did Dorian have a brother?“You should go,” Olivia said. “You aren’t welcome here.”“Why? Because I look different from everyone else?” I gestured to the other pets. “In case you haven’t heard, Olivia, I am the prince’s pet too, so that makes me just as important as you.”Olivia tosse

The temperature in the room dropped until it was nearly frigid.Dorian took a step toward Ellise, and almost as if she suddenly remembered who was in her presence, her gaze dropped to the floor.“Ria doesn’t need a whip to obey,” Dorian informed her. “Ria will never require a whip to obey. Is that clear?”Ellise straightened, plastering on a fake grin as if Dorian hadn’t just warned her within an inch of her life. She looped her arm through his, forcing him to escort her out of the room. “Of course,” she rushed to say. “Whatever you believe is needed, darling.”I followed behind them, feeling lost and nothing more than a burden. For the first time since being selected as a pet, I was granted alone time.My instructions were to prepare for the banquet, and I was surprised to find Dorian had requested Jenkins to bring me proper products for my hair. I took my time perfecting it, ensuring the curls formed perfect ringlets that landed at the middle of my spine.Makeup products lined the b

As if Dorian shared the same thoughts about the reality of our situation, he climbed out of bed and pointed to a stack of neatly folded clothes. “I…read up on some research while you slept. Humans require a routine, so I will wait here while you freshen up. I had Jenkins deliver some toiletry items to the bathroom.”Picking up the clothing, I bowed my head and shut the bathroom door behind me. It looked the same as the one in my room, except for a larger shower that had a bench.I removed my clothes, startled by the sight of myself in the mirror. My curls were unruly, a heap of spirals and frizz that made me look like a cartoon character the way my hair seemed to swallow my frail body.My golden eyes still had remnants of sleep coating them, a sign of how well I slept despite my nightmare. I had never slept in such a comfortable bed, and I certainly hadn’t slept with another holding me before. Especially a man.Color stained my cheeks at what the prince must have thought while he watc

A loud crash woke me from sleep.I rubbed my eyes, holding my teddy bear close to my chest when my mother entered the room with wide eyes. She padded quickly across the floorboards and gripped me by the shoulders. “I need you to get in your closet,” she whispered urgently. “I mean it, Aria. Don’t come out until I say so.”My chin wobbled, but I listened to Mommy’s instructions, crawling to the farthest corner behind the hangers of clothes.“Good girl,” she whispered with tears shining in her eyes. “I love you, my dearest Aria. I’ll be back soon.”My body trembled, my fingers gripped tightly around my teddy bear when more thuds echoed from below. I brought my knees to my chest, holding my breath until I heard Mommy scream. She told me to stay in the closet, but her screams made me stumble into my room on wobbly knees, inching cautiously towards my bedroom door.I stepped into the hallway, listening for other sounds, but Mommy’s screams had stopped. The stairs creaked beneath my weight,

The prince carried his new pet to his room, waves of reluctance and anxiety radiating from the unique girl in his arms. He placed her on his bed, promising to return in a few minutes before slipping away to the bathroom. He had to bathe again, even after he’d just bathed an hour before to wash the stench of her vomit off his skin. No matter how hard he scrubbed, it didn’t feel clean enough. He was certain some of it still lingered, hidden in crevices he couldn’t see.As Dorian cleansed his skin raw, shame overwhelmed him. It was his fault for not looking into her past abuse and how to move forward when it came to feeding her. It was his mistake, not hers, and his ignorance on the subject circulated through his brain until it was the only thing he could think about. He had to rectify it.He had to fix it so he’d never make the same mistake again. If he were to become an owner, he needed to act like one. After his shower, he returned to the bedroom in loose pants and a fitted shirt to
