Rui's grip tightened around my wrist as he leaned in, his eyes locked on mine.

"I can sue you for this," I said, my voice shaking more than I wanted it to.

"Oh, stop it, Emilia." He gave a short, scornful laugh. "You are nothing but a brat."

"What? Leave me alone!"

I couldn't understand it. We were divorced. Nothing I did with my life should have been his concern, and he had no right to come near me. Yet he was behaving as though I still belonged to him.

"You want to play games, huh?" He bit his lip, the way he always did when he was angry. "Let's see how well you play."

He let go of me and pulled out his phone, his thumbs moving in a hurry, as if someone on the other end were pressuring him. I seized the moment and slipped past him.

Just as I reached the door, I heard him say, "Hello. We should speak now."

I didn't care who he was talking to. I only wanted to leave, not just the restroom but the restaurant and everything that came with him.

I walked back to our table quickly. Ethan was still seated, his eyebrows drawn together as he watched me approach. The unease must have been written all over my face.

"Ethan, I think we should leave. I'm not comfortable here anymore."

Already? Your clothes are still stained." He glanced at them, then back at my face. "Are you okay?"

Before I could answer, Rui appeared behind me, standing still with that familiar slow movement of his fingers. The moment Ethan saw him, his expression darkened.

"What is he doing here?"

"I don't know," I whispered.

We stepped outside into the cool night air. Ethan asked me again, as if he suspected I had invited him.

"I truly have no idea."

He started toward the door, and I caught his arm and held on, begging him not to go back in. I had never wanted to speak to Rui again, and that waitress had forced the moment on me. I didn't want it to turn into a scene.

"He had the nerve to set you up just to talk to you?" Ethan said through clenched teeth. "Emilia, let me go and show him who I really am."

"No, please don't. You'll only give him the attention he's looking for." I softened my voice. "Just go home. You don't have to ruin your night because of him. Take a shower and cool down."

He studied my face for a long moment. "Okay. Make sure you're okay, alright?"

"Okay." I gave him a small smile, and he finally left.

When he was gone, I let out a long breath and went home. I climbed the stairs slowly, feeling the weight of the day in every step, until I saw Mia waiting outside my room with a pitiful look on her face.

"Emilia, can I talk to you?"

I was still angry with her for keeping secrets from me for years. But she was only eighteen, and I couldn't bring myself to look at her for long. I kept walking down the stairs.

She followed me, pleading. "Emilia, please."

"What, Mia? I just need to rest."

Her expression crumpled as she stared at me, and I sighed. "Okay. What do you want to tell me?"

"I just want to say I'm deeply sorry, and it won't happen again." Her voice trembled. "When Rui told me he liked me, I overlooked it. I didn't take it personally because he was drunk."

She kept explaining and apologizing, over and over. I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to hold on to my anger, but it slipped away. She threw her arms around me, and I let her.

That night I lay in bed and tried my best to sleep. It took a long time, but eventually I did.

---

Morning came again.

I was ready for work when my mother approached me, her hand resting on my shoulder and a gentle smile on her face. I had no idea why she was smiling, but I smiled back.

"You're ready? Going to work?"

"Yes, Mom." I kissed her cheek and tried to move past her, but she held me back and said the words I needed most.

"You will be happy again, Emilia."

They touched me deeply.

"Thank you," I whispered, and I excused myself before my eyes could betray me.

At the office, I was working on a task Steven had given me when a thought struck me. Rui's appearance at the restaurant had not been a coincidence. It had all been his plan, and he still had the audacity to speak to me as if I were the one who had wronged him. I kept turning the thought over in my mind, so lost in it that I almost didn't hear the voice beside me.

"Emilia. I have been calling you. Didn't you hear me?"

I jumped to my feet. "I'm sorry, Mr. Steven. What can I help you with?"

I didn't realize I was crying until a tear slid down my cheek. I looked up quickly, trying to blink it away.

"You don't have to hide it," he said quietly. "I understand if you're emotional."

I couldn't look at him. I had never heard that tone from him before, and it left me speechless.

"I heard what happened with your marriage, okay?"

I froze. I hadn't expected him to know, let alone say it so gently.

"You don't have to cry anymore."

Before I could answer, he pulled me into a hug, and I didn't pull away. I was stunned. Steven rarely smiled, and I had always thought of him as a strict boss, the kind who cared only about results. I never imagined he could be this kind.

For a moment, I let myself lean into the warmth of it, and the tears I had held back for days finally came.

Then I looked over his shoulder and saw Natasha standing at the end of the corridor, her eyes fixed on us with a terrifying stare.

I blinked, and she was gone. The corridor was empty. It had only been my imagination, but my heart pounded as if she had been real. The guilt of what I had seen in Steven's house came rushing back, and I quickly stepped away from him.

"Sir."

I was stunned as the woman continued. "And what are you still doing here? Are you trying to win my son back?" I stared at her in disbelief. Just then, the younger woman stepped forward. "No, Mother, she is not Natasha." She moved closer to her mother's side. "Have you forgotten what she looks like?" I let out a breath as I realized she had mistaken me for someone else. Steven appeared from the other side of the entrance. "Mother, welcome. This is Emilia, my assistant. Emilia, this is my mother, Mrs. Ivy, and my sister, Miss Sophia." I greeted them warmly and hoped they would be kind to me, especially after Mrs. Ivy had taken me for Natasha. Perhaps it was only her age. I watched as they carried their small bags upstairs, with the maid helping them. Later, I sat at my desk and gazed out of the window, at the right side, as I always did. My elbow rested on the table and my cheek against my palm. This time, I was not thinking about Rui. I was thinking about Steven's words

I held the necklace in my palm. It was definitely my sister's. I recognized the tiny scratch near the clasp. "But why didn't you give it to me sooner?" I asked. Ethan shrugged. "I forgot. Honestly, I could not tell you why." I studied his face for a moment, then closed my fingers around the chain. "Thank you. This means a great deal to my family." When I finally got home, I found Mia and placed the necklace in her hands. "Keep it safe," I told her. She nodded and held it close. I let the matter rest, though a quiet doubt lingered at the back of my mind. The next morning, I was standing in front of Steven's desk because he had called me in. I expected another task, another schedule change, another demand. It was something else entirely. "I heard about what happened before your marriage ended," he said. "I know I should not listen to other people's personal lives, but I think I should say this. Honestly, when I..." He paused and adjusted his tie, as though the words had caug

The words Steven had spoken echoed in my ears, and my eyes watered until the room blurred. Or are you the kind of assistant who believes she can get her way with her boss? My eyes moved restlessly across his face, searching for any sign that he regretted it. I stepped back, ready to leave, but Steven suddenly rushed toward me. "Damn it, I am so sorry. I did not mean it." I tried to break free, but he held on to my hands. When I turned my face away, he gently drew my attention back to him, pressing my hands together between his own. "I am truly sorry, Emilia. Please." It was astonishing. The man who had spoken so cruelly only moments ago was now pleading with me. "How could you?" I looked straight into his eyes. "Do you think that because I work for you, I am cheap? You are unbelievable." He did not let go, even when I pulled harder. "I was angry," he said quietly. "I had just realized that Natasha only ever loved me for my money. That is not an excuse. I know it is not

Ethan's eyes were hungry as he stared at me. He had no twin, and I was certain it was really him standing in front of me. "Stop it." I pushed his hand away, but he only stepped closer. Ethan had been my friend for more than twenty years, and I had never expected this from him. "I have always liked you," he said. "You are more than a friend to me. I was afraid to say it, but you don't have to be afraid of me." I backed away until my shoulders touched the door. My ears had heard the words, but my mind refused to accept them. Then, without warning, Ethan sank to the floor and knelt there with his head bowed, as though he were thinking. Was he telling the truth? I asked myself. I could not leave him like that, so I crouched down to help him up. That was when I noticed something was off. A sharp smell of alcohol reached my nose. I looked around the room and saw an open bottle on the edge of the table. He was drunk. I helped him to the sofa and stayed beside him until he fin

I sent a message to the unknown number. I wrote whatever came to mind, one thought after another, but there was no reply. The next morning, I went to work anyway. I walked into Steven's office already rehearsing my explanation, but I never got the chance to deliver it. Steven was already waiting when I walked in. He looked up, and his gaze sharpened. "Where is your phone?" he asked. "You haven't been picking up your calls." I hesitated. Without meaning to, I clasped my hands in front of me, as though that small barrier could shield me from his temper. "I lost it, sir. Last night. I promise I will replace it today after work." He studied me for a long moment, then leaned closer. I had been careful not to look at him; I did not trust my eyes . But when I finally glanced up, I found him watching them, unblinking, as if the truth might be written there. "Are you sure?" "Yes." He straightened and said, "Come with me." "Where are we going, sir?" "Just come. You will kn

  • PHENOMENAL: After Everything    Chapter 17:You Should Have Let Go

I was sitting outside on a wooden chair, a cup of coffee warming my hands, I felt peaceful. I took a slow sip and let my eyes wander over the garden. I had the whole day to myself. It felt like finally remembering how to breathe. On the other end of the chair, I found a small bag of seeds. I scattered a handful on the ground and watched two birds hop closer to eat. They stayed side by side, so close their wings almost touched. "Lovebirds," I whispered, and I smiled. I remembered something my mother used to say: when you accidentally see two creatures close together, eating or even mating, it means your own match is near. I laughed softly at the thought. Then a hand touched my shoulder. "Wow, two birds," my mother said, leaning over me. "They must be a male and a female." I looked back at them. They had moved even closer and were gently rubbing their necks together. My mother smiled knowingly at me, and I shook my head, though my cheeks felt warm. The peace did not last.
