Chapter 48

Daniella’s

Pov

Sitting across from Kent’s mother in the bright, quiet corner of the west-side café, I stir a spoon I don't need around a teacup I haven't touched.

My phone buzzes twice in my lap. I don't look at it. I already know Kent is standing inside the boardroom right now, staring down the lions.

Kent’s mother reaches across the small wooden table. Her warm, soft fingers cover my shaking hands, stopping the spoon from rattling against the ceramic. She has kind eyes, the same dark depth as Kent’s, carrying years of quiet survival inside a family built on stone and contracts.

"Breathe, Daniella," she whispers softly. "He walked in there because he chose to. Not because you asked him to."

"I know," I say, my voice tight. "That's what scares me. He's giving up a dynasty, his entire safety net, his grandfather's trust... and all for a scholarship student who throws up toast every morning."

Kent’s mother gives my hand a firm, grounding squeeze. "You think this is new? Kent has spent his whole life fighting just to breathe under their rules. They think money equals ownership. They think bloodline means they own his soul. When he chose you, he wasn't making a mistake. He was finally waking up."

She leans closer, her expression turning deeply serious. "Listen to me, child. Choosing Kent is going to bring a lot of noise. People in our circle—people who measure a man by his stock portfolio—will resent you. They won't understand love that isn't transactional. You need to make sure Kent knows something vital."

"What?" I ask, my heart beating fast.

"Tell him you want a partnership," she says gently. "Not a rescue. Men like my son and my husband spend their lives trying to fix things, save people, bear every weight alone. Kent needs to know you stand with him, not behind him waiting to be carried."

Her words settle deep into my chest, heavy and true.

An hour later, the café door chimes.

I look up. Kent walks in.

My breath catches. The hard, granite fury I saw on his face earlier is gone, replaced by a dark, simmering exhaustion that makes my chest ache. His tie is pulled slightly loose, his jacket unbuttoned, and his dark eyes lock onto mine the exact second he crosses the threshold. He moves fast, threading through the small tables, and drops into the chair right across from me.

Before his mother can even ask how it went, I stand up, walk around the table, and drop onto the chair right beside him. I grab his hand off the wood. His fingers are stiff, cold, and tense.

"Kent," I say, my voice dropping low. "Look at me. What happened?"

Kent turns his head slowly. He looks down at my hand holding his, then lifts his gaze to my face. The jaw muscle twitches once.

"They played their hand," Kent says, his voice rough like gravel. "Grandfather and my father. They offered a clean break from the merger contract."

Relief flashes through me for half a second. "That's... that's what you wanted. Freedom."

"Not freedom," Kent corrects, a bitter, grim smile twisting his lips. "Exile."

He leans forward, resting his elbows on the table, staring right into my eyes.

"They laid down an exit clause," Kent continues, his words coming fast and sharp. "I sign a release. I walk away clean from the civil injunctions. No corporate lawsuits chasing my personal bank account."

My pulse spikes. "Then sign it, Kent. Take the exit."

"Listen to the condition," he says, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "They aren't just stripping my executive board seat. They are demanding total severance from the family trust fund, all corporate equity shares, my inheritance, and every single position tied to the Kent name. Effective immediately. I walk out of that boardroom dead to the family ledger."

The air in the café feels like it turns to ice.

Total severance. Everything he was born with—gone in a single signature. Not just a minor pay cut or a lost bonus. Millions of dollars, real estate holdings, a safety net built over generations, wiped clean.

My mind spins. I stare at him, stunned by the sheer, terrifying magnitude of what they are asking him to surrender just to stop breathing their air.

"They wanted a poverty waiver on top of it," Kent adds, his dark eyes burning into mine. "They wanted proof you weren't coming back for child support trust funds. I folded the paper and walked out."

"Kent..." I breathe out, my chest tightening so hard I can barely pull air in. "You walked away from millions... for us?"

Kent doesn't blink. He reaches up, his warm hand cupping the side of my face, his thumb tracing my cheekbone with fierce, shaking tenderness.

"I walked away from a golden cage," Kent says softly, his voice thick with raw emotion. "Money is just numbers on a screen. Titles are just ink on paper. They can't buy one second of breathing room."

He pauses, dropping his hand slightly as his expression shifts into something deeply vulnerable, waiting for an answer I haven't given him out loud yet.

"Daniella," Kent asks, his voice dropping to a quiet, terrifyingly real plea. "If I lose every dollar my family owns... if we start tomorrow with zero safety net, rent due, and a baby on the way... will you still stay with me?"

I don't hesitate. Not for a single microsecond.

All the fear of wealthy families, high-society gala tests, and terrifying corporate boardrooms falls away like dust. I am not a helpless girl waiting to be rescued, and I am not a gold-digger running from a contract. I am his partner.

I slide my hand up his arm, wrapping my fingers around the warm cotton of his shirt right over his heart, feeling the heavy, fast thud beating just for us.

"I wasn't staying for your trust fund, Kent," I whisper, meeting his gaze with total, unbreakable clarity. "I was staying for you."

Kent lets out a long, ragged breath—the first real breath he's taken all morning. The dark storm in his eyes breaks, replaced by a blinding, fierce light. He pulls me hard against his shoulder, wrapping his arms around me in front of the whole café, holding me like I am the only solid ground left on earth.

"Good," Kent murmurs against my hair, his voice vibrating with absolute triumph. "Because we just bought our real life."

.Chapter SIXTY FiveDaniella’s PovMarcus’s words ring in my head all night: As soon as she’ll let me put a ring on her finger. My hand drifts to the silver jade bracelet on my wrist. I am ready. I don't want a stage, I don't want cameras flashing red dots, and I don't want high-society wives whispering over champagne flutes. I want quiet, private, and real.Next morning, Kent acts weird. He checks his phone twice while making coffee. He taps his screen with a tight, focused thumb, then slips it into his pocket fast when I walk into the kitchen.Old instincts twitch. Is Robert pulling another supply line? Did Dean Holloway reopen the review?I catch myself. I am not living in paranoia mode anymore. I lean against the fridge, sipping black coffee, and watch him zip a small leather folio bag."You're acting like a spy trading secrets in a alley, Vance," I tease, raising an eyebrow.Kent pauses, turning around with a slow, faint smirk touching his mouth. "Just organizing workflow. Put y

My name at the bottom of the dean's footer? Still locked in limbo. Formal department review. Corporate compliance shadow trailing my syllabus like a ghost.I pull open the heavy double doors of the economics department hall. Daniella walks beside me, carrying a fresh leather notebook, looking sharp and clear-eyed.Dean Holloway intercepts us by the faculty mailboxes. Her expression is granite-tight—not hostile, just heavy with institutional gravity."Dr. Vance," Holloway says, looking between us. "Miss Vance is cleared of the extortion conspiracy trace. Her roster stands." She turns her sharp gaze to me. "The board review regarding your faculty standing remains active. We cannot have a direct instructor-student dynamic in upp

"I don't doubt your heart, Kent. Not anymore."We sit back down on the weathered porch bench, the ocean roaring low in the dark. My fingers touch the silver chain and white jade resting on my wrist. I look up at him, moonlight cutting silver across his sharp jaw."How we started still messes with my head sometimes," I admit quietly, staring at the grain of the wood. "A setup office, a blackmailer in the dark, a cold professor who didn't want messy feelings, and a baby making choices for us before we even knew how to talk."Kent covers my hand with his big, heavy palm. His eyes are dark, deep, and steady. "The start was a wreck, Daniella. I won't lie about that. My grandfather built a cage, Gareth set a trap, and I walk

Chapter Sixty TwoDaniella’s PovMorning light hits the cheap kitchen blinds, and I lay the cold truth out on the table like open blueprints."Zero trusts," I tell Daniella, tracing a finger across a pad of yellow legal paper. "Gone. The family real estate portfolio in the valley—revoked access codes. The sovereign equity line through grandfather’s syndicate—locked out. Dividend distribution rights from the baseline parent trust—terminated."I look up, waiting for her shoulders to drop. Waiting for the realization that she chained herself to a sinking ship.Daniella sits cross-legged on the chair, sipping black coffee, her dark eyes steady and unblinking. "What’s left in your name alone?""My independent stock portfolio from pre-venture advisory advisory fees, two hundred thousand in liquid cash sitting in a clean credit union account, and Vance Advisory Group intellectual property rights," I say, laying out the exact math. "It’s enough to cover payroll, office rent for six months, an

The tiredness on his face turns into hard stone. "What did she say?""She said you sat with Robert. She said there's a paper copy sitting in your briefing folder right now tying my enrollment audit clearance to your wire release." I cross my arms, forcing my legs steady. "Tell me straight, Kent. Did Robert put an exit clause with my name on it?"Kent stares at me for two long seconds. Then he lets out a heavy, ragged breath, running a hand down his face. He walks past the kitchen island, dropping his heavy leather portfolio onto the table with a dull thud. He flips the brass latches, pulls out a single thick sheaf of cream legal paper,

I look at Kent standing tall in his dark jacket, ready to walk into a shadow trap for four million dollars of bridge liquidity. My throat tightens. Every instinct tells me this isn't an investment meeting—it's an ambush wrapped in a wire transfer. Robert wants Kent crawling back to the family tree, humiliated and broke.I open my mouth to warn him, to beg him to skip it, then catch myself.No. I am not playing the frantic, controlling high-society wife who tells him how to breathe.I step across the floor, reaching out to rest my palms flat against his chest, right over his steady, heavy heartbeat.
