BRABRA

My coworker finds me at my desk Friday morning, her phone already in her hand, her expression carefully arranged into something she's trying hard to keep neutral.

"You need to see this," she says, sliding into the chair beside mine. "Before someone shows it to you the wrong way."

She turns the screen toward me. A gossip website, the kind I've scrolled past a hundred times without ever clicking, loads a photograph across the top of the page. My stomach drops before I've even fully process

ANDRIY The question waits nearly two weeks before I finally ask it, and even then, it isn't planned. "I got a letter today," she says finally. "Forwarded from my old address. From the same office that called you by accident, weeks ago." My chest tightens. "What did it say?" "That the file's being closed. Officially. After all this time." Her hand tightens slightly against the windowsill. "I don't know why it hit me the way it did. I thought I'd made my peace with all of it years ago." I study her carefully, weighing the question I've been holding for two weeks now against the fragile, unguarded moment standing in front of me. "Brabra." I say her name gently, giving her every chance to stop me before I ask. "What are you hiding? Not the box. Not the journals. I'm not asking to go looking again. I'm asking because I think you're carrying something that's getting heavier instead of lighter, and I don't know how to help you carry it if I don't understand what it actually is."

BRABRAAndriy doesn't come by the next day, or the day after, though his message sits at the top of my phone screen every time I unlock it, patient and waiting, exactly the way he promised he would be.I read it more times than I'd like to admit. Not to push. Just to listen, if you ever want me to. There's no pressure folded into it anywhere, no reminder that he's waiting, no second message following up when I don't respond right away. Just the one, sitting there, patient the way he said he'd be.I don't reply right away. I need the space more than I expect to, sorting through the tangle of anger and guilt and old, exhausted grief the journals stirred loose in me. By the third evening, the silence has stopped feeling like protection and started feeling like something closer to loneliness, and I finally pick up the phone and call him."Hey," he answers, careful, like he's not sure which version of me he's about to get."Can you come over?" I ask. "I think I'm ready to talk. Not about e

BRABRAThree days after the shoebox, I come home to find Andriy in my bedroom, a stack of my old journals spread open across the bed, his expression caught somewhere between apology and fascination.Something in my chest goes cold instantly."What are you doing?"He looks up, startled by the sharpness in my voice, one journal still open on his lap, another stacked beside him on the comforter. His hand moves away from the pages slowly, guiltily, though it does nothing to slow the panic already rising in my throat. "I was helping you sort through the closet again, like you asked. These fell out of a box on the top shelf. I didn't mean to read them, I promise, I just — the pages were open when they landed, and one caught my eye before I could stop myself.""Which page?" My voice comes out tight, controlled, though everything underneath it is anything but controlled. He hesitates, and that hesitation tells me everything I need to know. "Something about a house on Miller Street. I only rea

  • PREGNANT WITH THE CEO'S TWINS   Chapter 27: The Woman in the Photograph

BRABRA Andriy shows up on Saturday with empty boxes, cheerful in a way that makes it hard to stay annoyed with him for very long. "I thought we could start slow," he says, setting the flattened cardboard against my kitchen wall. "Just the things you're sure about. No pressure to decide anything else yet." I still haven't given him an answer about moving in, not fully, but somewhere over the past week the question has quietly shifted from if to when, and neither of us has said so out loud yet. Sorting through what's mine feels like a smaller, safer step than committing to the whole decision at once. We work through the hall closet first, easy things — winter coats-----66------___"'bjh$$#34&-- I haven't worn in months, a box of mismatched kitchen supplies I'm happy to consolidate. Andriy hums something under his breath as he works, more relaxed than I've seen him in weeks, sleeves rolled up, a smear of dust already on his forearm that he doesn't seem to notice or mind. "You'd t

BRABRAI spend the morning refreshing the same three news sites, watching to see if the photograph resurfaces somewhere new, my stomach twisting a little tighter with every empty search. My coworker brings me tea I don't drink and sits with me through most of it, offering quiet company instead of advice, which is exactly what I need right now. She doesn't ask what Andriy's legal team has found. She just stays close, the way she has since the day I finally told her the truth."Any word?" she asks eventually, glancing at my phone."He's coming by this afternoon. Said they found who took it.""That's fast.""I guess money makes people move quickly when it's their reputation at stake." I don't mean it unkindly, not really, but the words come out sharper than I intend, worry curdling into something closer to bitterness by midday. She squeezes my shoulder gently before returning to her desk, and I sit there a while longer, one hand pressed against my stomach, waiting for news that might tel
