Chapter 2

Penulis: Anonymous
I looked at the table full of dishes I'd spent the entire afternoon preparing for her. Steam slowly faded from the food until they were stone cold. Somewhere along the way, so had my heart.

My phone buzzed with a text from an unfamiliar number.

It read, "You don't know when to quit, do you? Did you honestly think you could compete with everything Kristen and I have been through together? All it would take is a single phone call, and she'd leave you behind without a second thought."

I couldn't help but laugh at myself.

Once upon a time, if anyone had told me Kristen would abandon me for another man, I would've called them insane.

Now the truth was right in front of me, impossible to ignore.

Kristen didn't come home that night, either.

The next morning, I walked into the kitchen, finding Kristen already eating breakfast. She was smiling at her phone, her fingers flying across the screen as she texted someone.

The smile vanished the instant she saw me.

"We're going to see Jake tonight," she said coldly. "You're apologizing to him. Do you have any idea what your comment did? He was miserable all night. I even saw him wiping away tears when he thought no one was looking."

A humorless laugh escaped me. "You want me to apologize? For what? For being upset that my wife spent our wedding anniversary celebrating another man's birthday?"

Her expression hardened as she shot to her feet and raised her voice. "Peter York, Jake and I grew up together! If there were ever going to be something between us, it would've happened long before you came along.

"His family's gone bankrupt. He's having the hardest time of his life, and I'm just trying to be there for him as a friend. Why do you insist on twisting everything into something dirty?"

I stared down at the table before quietly asking, "So when you and Jake made out in front of everyone at the bar… Was that just what friends do?"

Her expression faltered for the briefest moment before anger took over. "I've already explained that! It was a stupid party game, and that was the punishment. Why do you keep blowing everything out of proportion?

"If you don't trust me, maybe we should spend some time apart. Stay home and think about what you've become."

I watched her walk away.

At some point, we'd forgotten how to have a normal conversation. Every word between us turned into an argument.

I couldn't remember when the kind, patient woman I'd fallen in love with had disappeared.

Or maybe, she'd only stopped being that person with me.

I lowered my head, my chest aching with a pain I could no longer endure.

From that day on, Kristen never came home again.

That said, thanks to Jake's social media, it wasn't hard to keep track of what she'd been up to.

"My favorite beef taco in the whole city. Watching you painstakingly pick out every last piece of cilantro for me almost made me feel like we'd gone back to the good old days."

"My brave girl was terrified of the drop tower but still rode it with me. Seeing how pale you were afterward almost made me feel bad…"

"A little kid mistook us for a couple today and asked when we were getting married. I nearly died laughing."

It was less a social media feed than a daily reminder that he intended to stake his claim.

In every photo, Kristen looked radiant—laughing freely, with her eyes shining brighter than I'd seen in a long time.

I stared at the screen, lost in thought. I couldn't remember the last time she'd smiled at me like that.

Until then, I could remain in this world as a spirit. An hour later, Kristen arrived with a group of people. Kristen's expression immediately wavered.I spoke before she could make up her mind. "It sounds like things are pretty serious. You should go. If something really happens to him, you'll only regret it."She looked at me hesitantly. "What about you?""I'll be fine. We're almost home anyway. I'll call the butler to come help me with the shopping."Even so, she insisted on walking me to the front door. After helping me unload everything from the car, she looked at me earnestly. "Honey, go on inside. I'll check on Jake, then I'll come straight back. We'll celebrate Grandpa's birthday together."I simply nodded. Then I stood there and watched as she hurried back into the car. The vehicle disappeared slowly down the road until it was gone from sight.I bid Kristen a goodbye in my heart. The butler, Steven Kohl, helped carry most of the shopping inside. Before I even reached the front door, my phone buzzed with a text.It read, "Peter, do you really think you'll win Kristen back by

Kristen's voice instantly turned tense. "What happened?"Jake sounded panicked, almost on the verge of tears. "I… I was crossing an intersection, and I couldn't stop thinking about you. I was distracted, so I crashed into another car."The other driver won't let it go. They're demanding compensation. Kristen… they're not going to arrest me, are they?"The noise in the background was loud and chaotic enough to make the accident sound serious.I let out a quiet scoff.Jake recognized my voice at once. The line went quiet for a second before he spoke, his tone carefully subdued. "So you're with Peter. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have disturbed you."Forget I called. I'll handle this myself. My family's already fallen apart anyway. If they want compensation, I'll pay it. If they decide to press charges… Then I guess that's what I deserve."Just… Don't fight with Peter because of me anymore. I don't want to cause trouble for you. I never did."Every word was delivered with heartbreaking

Kristen and I went to the shopping mall together. It had been a long time since we'd gone shopping like this, just the two of us—not since Jake came back from overseas.I took my time browsing the aisles, picking out one thing after another—clothes, snacks, daily essentials… Anything I thought Austin Snowe, Kristen's grandfather, might like. Before long, the shopping cart was overflowing.Kristen chuckled. "No wonder Grandpa dotes on you so much. At this rate, you're going to buy out the whole shop."I just smiled and kept packing the trolley.Austin had always treated me like family. Out of everyone in this world, he was the one I'd miss the most.Since I was leaving soon, this was the least I could do for him.We finally finished shopping and got everything sorted.Just as we were about to reach the underground car park, I suddenly remembered something.I'd forgotten to buy Austin a pair of knee warmers.I immediately turned back, eager to head into the shopping centre aga

Back to the present day, I was half-unconscious when I felt someone trying to undress me. Instinctively, I caught Kristen's wrist and pushed her hand away."Don't… Only my wife gets to touch me."The hand froze. After a moment, a quiet voice asked, "Who's your wife?"I couldn't stop the smile tugging at my lips. "My wife is Kristen. She's the only one I want."But memories of the way she'd always looked at Jake came flooding back. A dull ache settled in my chest."But she doesn't love me. She loves someone else. If she ever had to choose between him and me, she'd choose him every single time."Silence stretched between us.When Kristen finally spoke, her voice was hoarse. "No. I don't love anyone else."Whatever she said after that never really sank in, for my mind was too foggy to follow. She just… kept talking.Groaning, I pulled the blanket over my head, shutting out her voice. At last, there was silence.…The next morning, I woke up to warm sunlight spilling across th
