The first night in the mansion of that idiot and my new stepfather was pure hell.

Every time the hardwood floor creaked in the hallway, I froze in bed, staring at the ceiling with my heart in my throat, waiting for my bedroom door to swing open. It didn't, but Mateo’s warning kept echoing in my head like a persistent echo: “Whenever you want to pick a fight and talk trash to me... I’m going to shut you up with a kiss.”

«Arrogant bastard.»

By six in the morning, I couldn't handle the claustrophobia of my four walls anymore. I threw on a pair of athletic shorts and a loose gray t-shirt, set on heading down to the kitchen for a strong cup of coffee and slipping out for a run before the rest of the house woke up.

Big mistake.

As I stepped into the kitchen, illuminated by the cold light of dawn, I found Mateo with his back to me, leaning against the granite island. Wearing a full set of clothes seemed to be a concept he was allergic to in this house: he wore only gray sweat shorts, shirtless and barefoot. He was drinking water straight from a glass pitcher, droplets trailing down his chin and sliding across the ridges of his abs.

I froze at the entrance. I tried to turn around without making a sound, but the squeak of my sneaker gave me away.

—You're up early, “little brother” —Mateo said without turning around, setting the pitcher down on the granite.

He turned slowly, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. His eyes were half-lidded with sleep, giving him a dangerously lazy, relaxed look.

—I'm going out —I said in the coldest voice I could muster, avoiding looking anywhere below his neck.

—For a run? —He crossed his arms, accentuating the muscles in his shoulders—. How studious. I thought you preferred contact sports.

A rush of heat shot straight to my ears.

—Shut up, Mateo. My parents are going to come down any second.

—“Your” parents aren't —he corrected, taking a slow step toward the kitchen island, closing the distance—. “Our” parents. Get used to the phrasing, Lucas. Unless, of course, you want your mom coming down and catching us chatting... this up close.

He took two more steps. The kitchen was massive, but suddenly the air felt suffocatingly thin. I stood my ground, refusing to take a step back and show weakness, even though my pulse was racing out of control. Mateo stopped right on the other side of the island, leaning over the granite counter toward me. The scent of his minty toothpaste mixed with the warmth of his freshly awakened skin completely enveloped me.

—You have an infuriating habit of pushing my buttons —I muttered, clenching my fists at my sides—. Sofi was right. You're just an egomaniac who only thinks with what's between his legs.

Huge mistake. Dropping Sofi’s name in his face was like throwing a lit match into a gasoline tank.

Mateo's smirking smile vanished instantly. His dark eyes turned shadowy, hard as the rink's ice. In one swift, unpredictable movement, he rounded the kitchen island, grabbed the back of my neck with one hand, and slammed me backward against the stainless-steel refrigerator.

The metallic thud echoed loudly in the silent kitchen.

—I warned you yesterday what would happen if you talked trash to me again, Lucas —he whispered against my lips, so close I could feel the humidity of his breath. His body was pinned against mine, trapping me with zero room to maneuver. His thigh slipped between mine, establishing an absolute dominance that made me choke back a gasp.

—Let go of me... —I managed to say, but the threat held no real weight. My hands, instead of shoving him away, dug into his bare sides, feeling the searing heat of his tensed muscles.

—Or what? You gonna scream? —Mateo challenged, brushing his nose against mine, sliding his free hand down my waist and slipping it under my gray t-shirt. His rough palm brushed against my bare skin, making me flinch involuntarily—. Scream. Give your mom the perfect welcome to her new life.

He was about to kiss me. I could see the hungry, possessive glint in his pupils. My heart hammered wildly against his chest, caught between the sheer panic of getting caught and a sudden, paralyzing surge of desire that turned my legs to lead.

Suddenly, the sound of heavy footsteps and a dry cough resounded from upstairs, followed by Carlos calling out for my mother.

The spell shattered instantly.

Mateo didn't release me right away. He took two agonizing seconds to stare at my mouth, pressing the pad of his thumb firmly over my bottom lip—as if erasing a mark—and then pulled away with infuriating slowness, just as the footsteps started coming down the stairs.

He casually adjusted his shorts, flashed me one last look dripping with promise, and strolled toward the coffee machine.

—Good morning, Dad —Mateo said in the most normal tone imaginable as Carlos walked into the kitchen—. I was just telling Lucas that we should head to practice together today. You know... to start building some teamwork.

I stayed glued to the fridge, trying to catch my breath, feeling the phantom heat of Mateo's thumb burning on my lip and knowing, with absolute certainty, that living under the same roof as him was going to completely destroy me.

“Not a chance in hell!” The scream burst from the depth of my lungs, bouncing off the dining room walls. “You're both completely out of your minds if you think I’m sleeping in the same damn room as this asshole! I’d rather pitch a tent in the backyard or sleep on top of the lawnmower!” “I don’t want him in here either!” Mateo snapped for the first time, yanking the ice pack away from his face to reveal his split lip. “I deal with enough of his daily drama as it is, without having him breathing down my neck while I sleep.” “That is enough!” Carlos slammed his hand flat against the table, making the coffee cups dance. “Neither of you is in any position to make demands. Mateo, deal with it. Lucas, go upstairs right now and get your stuff. This is my house, these are our rules, and if you can’t act like civilized human beings during the day, you’re going to learn how to coexist at night. You’re moving in together today, and that is final.” I whipped around to look at my mom, hoping f

The impact echoed like a snap in the hallway. Mateo’s head jerked back violently from the force of the blow, and he took two staggering steps backward, breaking his grip on me. He brought a hand up to his cheek, brushing his swollen bottom lip, and stared at me with wide, shocked eyes as the hot blood of a fight ignited in both our gazes again. I ran to my room, tripping over my own feet, slammed the door shut, and threw the lock with my hands shaking out of control. I slid down the back of the door until my ass hit the floor, burying my hands in my hair and gripping it tight, feeling like I was about to lose my mind. My chest was heaving, my lungs burning, and my brain was going a thousand miles an hour. *“What the fuck just happened to me? Why did I get so turned on? Why with a guy? And why the hell did I come so damn fast?”* The questions kept slamming against my skull like a sledgehammer. I couldn't wrap my head around it. My whole life I’d been into girls. I liked Sofi. I want

Mateo shoved his hand under my pants without asking for permission and with zero intention of stopping. His fingers, hard and rough from years of gripping a hockey stick, slid down through the fabric and grabbed right onto my erect dick. The touch burned me from the inside out; it was like an electric shock straight to my balls that completely paralyzed me. I froze. Feeling his massive palm wrapping around my dick made me flinch, but his whole body was crushing me against the cold wooden wall, leaving me trapped with no way out. I let out a choked groan against his neck, feeling my legs give out all at once. It was a dirty kind of pleasure, a high so intense that I had never felt anything like it in my fucking life. Mateo’s mouth dragged down my throat, sucking on the sensitive skin right above my collarbone while his hand stroked my shaft. At first he went slow, moving up and down with a calculated pressure, dragging over the sensitive skin and pulling every groan out of me that I t

I slammed into the mansion, the pulse pounding in my ears like a stampede. The front door shut behind me with a heavy thud that echoed through the marble foyer, and I took the stairs three at a time, feeling my blood boiling at a dangerous temperature. The vibration of my phone in my pocket was still burning against my thigh, as if that picture of Mateo and his brazen text had been branded into my skin. And there he was. Standing right in the middle of the hallway under the skylight, looking completely unbothered, like he owned the damn place. He was wearing my gray pajama pants—a pair that hung loose on me, but fit him outrageously tight around the hips and thighs—and he was completely shirtless. Drops of water from his recent shower were slowly running down the center of his chest, tracing the ridges of his abs before disappearing under the waistband of the pants. “I’ve had it with you, Mateo!” I yelled, closing the distance in long strides until I was less than three feet from hi

The drive from the mansion to campus felt like sitting inside a pressure cooker. Sofi was waiting for me at our usual spot behind the library, sitting on a concrete bench with her knees pulled tightly to her chest. She looked small. Vulnerable. Broken in a way that made a knot of heavy guilt twist right in the pit of my stomach. I had kissed her ex. Well, her ex had kissed me, but it made me feel like an absolute traitor either way. —Lucas… —she breathed out, her voice cracking as soon as I sat down beside her. Without a word, I wrapped my arms around her shoulders and pulled her close. For three years, this was the exact role I had dreamed of playing: her safe harbor, the guy who would pick up the pieces after Mateo tore her world apart. I pressed a kiss to the top of her head, trying to channel every ounce of warmth and comfort I possessed. —I’m right here, Sofi. You’re going to be okay, I promise. She buried her face in the crook of my neck, clutching at my jacket as she let
