I woke up to voices.

Not loud enough to understand.

Just enough to know they weren’t meant for me.

At first, I thought I was dreaming. The kind where sound bleeds through before your eyes open. But then I shifted, and pain tugged lightly at my arm, the IV still taped there, the reminder that I wasn’t home, wasn’t safe in ignorance anymore.

I stayed still.

That was something I learned quickly in this house.

Stillness gave you information.

The voices came again. Male. Low. Controlled.

Lucien.

The house changed after the burial. Not in obvious ways. The walls didn’t shift. The furniture stayed where it was. The staff still moved quietly, efficiently, like ghosts trained to never disturb the air.But something essential was gone. Not Chase.Sound.Silence settled into the Sinclair mansion like a second skin. The kind that didn’t come from peace but from things left unsaid on purpose.Lucien stopped touching me.It happened so suddenly that at first, I thought it was temporary. A pause. Grief, maybe. Shock. The kind of emotional shutdown people talk about when something painful happens. But days passed. Then a week. And nothing. No hand on my waist when we passed in the hallway. No fingers curling around my wrist when he wanted my attention. No presence behind me at night. He slept in the same bed. That somehow made it worse. The first night after the funeral, I lay awake while he lay beside me, stiff on his back, staring at the ceiling like it had answers he wasn’t sharing.

The day came quietly. No rain. No thunder. They dressed me up without asking what I wanted.Black lace. Long sleeves. Modest enough to look respectful, expensive enough to look appropriate. I didn’t complain.Complaining requires energy and I didn’t have any left.Lucien was already downstairs when I came down. Standing by the entrance. Not a single crack in the image he had spent his life perfecting. He looked at me once.Just once.“Hold yourself together,” he said. “Today isn’t about you.”I nodded. It wasn’t about me.It was about the man being lowered into the ground. The drive to the cemetery felt endless. Trees blurred past the window. People slowed as our cars passed, drawn by the quiet gravity of wealth and tragedy intertwined.Lucien stared straight ahead the entire time.No sighs. No clenched jaw.Nothing to signal loss. The cemetery was already full when we arrived.Black umbrellas. Black coats. Black sunglasses hiding eyes that watched everything. The Sinclair name had d

I was sitting by the window in the small sitting room he had confined me to, watching the garden without really seeing it. My hand rested on my stomach without thinking. It’s more of a habit now. Then the silence broke, footsteps approaching fast.I looked up just as the door swung open.It was one of Lucien’s security men. Daniel. He never came upstairs. Ever. His face was gray. Not pale.Gray.“Mrs. Sinclair,” he said, trembling..“What is it?” I asked. He hesitated.Just long enough.Behind him, Lucien appeared in the doorway.Perfectly composed.“Speak,” Lucien ordered calmly.Daniel swallowed. “There’s been… an incident.”The word rang in my ears.Incident.“With who?” I asked almost worried.Daniel’s eyes flicked to Lucien. Then back to me.“With Mr. Chase.”The room blurred.I grabbed the arm of the chair, nails digging into the wood.“What about him?” I said. “Is he hurt?”Lucien’s jaw tightened almost annoyingly. Daniel took a breath. “There was a car accident. On the expr

“There,” he said calmly. “That solves that.”I stood in the middle of the room, barefoot, wrapped in a sweater that wasn’t mine. “What… does that mean?” I asked.Lucien straightened his cufflinks. Again. Always the cufflinks. “It means you won’t be wandering anymore.”The word hit harder than I expected.Wandering.As if I’d been reckless. As if the house hadn’t already been swallowing me the whole time.“I wasn’t wandering,” I said. My voice came out thin. “I fainted. I was sick.”“And you were overhearing things you weren’t supposed to hear,” he replied, almost annoyed. My stomach dropped. He knew.“How long?” I whispered.Lucien finally looked at me.His eyes were cold, not angry, not cruel. “Long enough.”I wrapped my arms around myself. “You can’t lock me in.”“I can,” he said. “And I have.”I laughed once. It cracked. “I’m not a child for God’s sake.”“No,” he agreed. “You’re a liability.”That word again.I took a step back without meaning to.Lucien stepped forward.“I’ve go

“Ophelia… Ophelia, can you hear me?”I managed to blink.Tessa’s face hovered into view. She was kneeling beside me, one hand hovering near my shoulder like she wasn’t sure if touching me would break something.“You fainted,” she said. Not panicking. But her eyes were different. “Don’t move yet.”I tried to sit up anyway. The room tilted hard this time. My stomach hurt.Tessa’s hand came down, firm now. “No. Please. Just…give it a second.”Please.That word landed strangely.I let my head fall back. The room smelled like too many people had been here recently. Perfume. Judgment. Silence left behind like fingerprints.“They’ve all gone,” Tessa said, like she knew what I was thinking. “Lucien too.”That shouldn’t have felt like relief. It did.I swallowed. My throat burned. “How embarrassing,” I whispered.Tessa shook her head immediately. “It wasn’t.”I let out a breath that sounded more like a laugh. “I collapsed. On the floor. In front of his family.”“They were already standing on y

Everyone was already seated. Perfect posture. Perfect silence. Too perfect, like a scene arranged before the actor steps onto the stage.I knew something was wrong the moment I walked into the dining room.Lucien sat at the head of the table.Waiting.I slowed instinctively, my body reacting before my mind caught up. My stomach tightened, not with nausea this time, but fear. The kind that starts low and spreads outward, like a warning flare.Tessa glanced at me first. Not with sympathy. With anticipation.“Sit,” Lucien said.No greeting. No eye contact. Just a command.I took the seat opposite him. Too far to touch. Too close to escape. The cutlery was already laid out. Breakfast untouched, the steam was long gone. This wasn’t a meal.It was a trial.Lucien folded his hands on the table. Calm. Composed. Deadly.“I’ve been patient,” he began.I swallowed.“That’s generous of you,” he continued, voice smooth, “considering the position you’ve put me in.”“I didn’t…”“Don’t interrupt me.”
