When Charlene had mentioned the fact that the women in town had been spreading rumours about Ezra being hung, I never expected it to be true.
Shaking my head, I tried to focus on the current dilemma I was in; stranded on a rock near a massive waterfall, and I was sure that nobody would hear me calling for help.
Have I done something wrong? Is that why he had shifted and then took off?
I shouldn’t have kissed him, but I couldn’t resist. There was just something about knowing that no other woman had ever kissed him before.
But why had he run off? What if he was saving his first kiss for someone special and I had ruined it?
I sighed and lowered my head to stare at the small rocks below my feet. After another second’s hesitation, I slowly started to slip down the rock, but I had once again misjudged the depth because when Ezra was near, the water looked shallower.
I slipped right underneath the water the moment I was off the rock. Panic hit, but I forced it aside. You can swim, idiot!
I kicked toward the surface and reached it before my air ran out. Halfway to the edge of the pool, the depth changed again, making it possible for me to walk the rest of the way.
I had just stepped onto dry land when I heard a loud bang that startled the birds in the trees. I stood frozen, staring up at the sky as they flew away before I snapped into action.
Two steps later, a movement from the corner of my eyes caught my attention. I didn’t wait to see who or what it was; I instantly started running in the direction of the house. But wearing wet clothes made it hard. It slowed me down and made it easier for whoever was chasing me to catch up.
A heavy weight slammed into my back, sending me falling forward. My head slammed into something, knocking me out.

“Is she dead?”
“No.”
“I killed her, didn’t I?”
“Stop talking.”
“But I—”
A vicious snarl instantly silenced whoever was speaking. “One more word and I’ll cut your tongue off.”
The haze slowly cleared from my mind, making me aware of a few things. One was the fact that we were moving, and two was the fact that there was a thick arm around my back and one under my knees, and my right side was pressed against a warm, but naked chest.
“I’m really sorry. I—”
“Shut it, kid.”
I recognized the raspy voice as Obsidian’s. Where is he taking me? Who is the kid? And why is he talking to the kid like that?
Obsidian shifted me in his arms, making a moan fall from my lips as pain flashed through my skull.
His steps faltered, but he kept on walking.
“Am I going to get punished, Alpha?” the kid asked.
Obsidian growled and came to a stop. He turned, probably to glare down at the kid. His chest expanded as he sucked in a breath.
“I’m not your Alpha. I—”
“You should be,” the kid interrupted him. “You’re mean and scary. We need a leader like you. It’s not that Devrim isn’t a good leader, he’s just—”
“Enough!”
A shiver of fear raced down my spine. There was a thud and a whimper, followed by a few seconds of silence.
“Shake it off, kid.”
“I’m fine.”
“Good. Now get the fuck out of here and stay within your limits. If I find you here again, I’ll lock you in the basement for a week.”
The kid wanted to say more, but his words were cut off by the scary sound Obsidian made.
“Three seconds, kid. That’s all I’m giving you.”
There was a short lapse of silence and then the sound of branches snapping. Obsidian blew out a breath that stirred the strands of hair on my head.
“I know you’re awake.”
I hesitated, but then slowly opened my eyes and tilted my head back against his shoulder to look up at him.
“How do you know I’m awake?” I questioned.
His dark eyes darted over my face, but lingered on my forehead a bit longer. “Your heartbeat and breathing changed.”
“Oh.” I frowned at him. “You can hear that?”
Obsidian looked away from me and started walking again. He answered my question after a few minutes of silence, “We have very keen hearing.”
My eyes trailed over him.
I noticed that his hair was hanging loose and brushing the top of his shoulders as he moved, and his skin was covered in a layer of sweat.
Being so close to him, I had a clear view of the dark ink that covered almost every inch of his skin.
I reached up and pressed shaky fingers against a tattoo on his right shoulder. Obsidian tensed and sucked in a sharp breath. I ignored his reaction and traced the outline of a petal. The flower was one I hadn’t seen before, but like so many things these days, it somehow seemed familiar.
“Stop touching me,” he growled.
Instead of listening, I continued to trace his ink. On some parts of his skin, beneath the tattoos, I could feel the still raised skin of old scars. Obsidian, I realized, had a lot of scars. It was probably why he was covered in so much ink.
“Vanya,” he rasped. “Stop touching me.”
“Why?” I asked. “I like touching you.”
My hand slid over his shoulder and up the side of his thick neck and into his hair.
“I’m warning you.”
I tugged on the strands that curled around my fingers, earning a low grunt from him. Shifting, I wrapped my other arm around his neck to use as leverage to pull myself up so I could press my lips to the skin right behind his ear.
A shudder shook his big body. Obsidian muttered something under his breath when he stumbled.
I smiled and kissed the same spot again, but this time, I tasted his skin with the tip of my tongue.
It made him snap.
He is defenceless. I could easily hurt him. To be honest, I had considered it, but then Devrim’s words flashed through my mind and pulled me out of my disturbing thoughts.Devrim had been right. But it didn’t make me fear Obsidian less.I sat in the chair a few feet from the bed, staring at the door as I waited for Devrim to return. Every passing second that he was away made my mind race with things that could go wrong.Darkness was creeping in on me, and I had no idea how to handle it.A whimper from the bed made my eyes snap over to it.Obsidian was on his stomach, clutching the pillow beneath his head as his big body trembled. The whimpers changed into growls that made my skin break out in goosebumps. The room suddenly fell silent again, but it didn’t last long.Rolling onto his back, Obsidian clutched at the sheets as his whimpers started up again. It got louder and louder.Tears filled my eyes.It sounded like he was in pain. What am I supposed to do? My eyes darted over to the
I think I’m going to pass out. After everything that had happened, I never thought that I would be returning to the cabin. My steps faltered when we reached the front door. Oblivious to my hesitation, Devrim opened the door and entered. As he turned to close it, his eyes locked on me. “Vanya?”When he told me that Obsidian was sick, the concern I felt had me agreeing to go with him, but standing outside the house made me second guess myself.I was about to face the man who had attacked me, the man who haunted my dreams, and not in a good way.Swallowing, I took a step forward, but my muscles tensed, preventing me from moving.“What’s wrong?” Devrim asked as he walked over to me. “You’ve gone pale.”“I…” My words trailed off when movement behind him caught my attention. My knees weakened when a wave of fear hit me. I wasn’t ready to see him yet!Panic hit next.If Devrim hadn’t grabbed hold of my arms, I would have run away.“Rosebud—”“I don’t want to see him,” I blurted.“Please, Va
What are monsters? The imaginary creatures we were sure hid under our beds? Were they the creatures that the authors and filmmakers created? Maybe the stories told to scare us were monsters in their own way? Or maybe the adults who told us those stories were the real monsters?A monster was cruel and evil.A monster was someone who found joy in hurting others. Like those men who hid in the shadows, waiting for a woman or man to come along. A monster was someone who killed without a second thought.I sniffed and reached up to wipe the tears from my cheeks. No matter how much I tried, I couldn’t pull my eyes away from the group of kids in the alley below me. I had spotted them the moment they entered. One of them had pulled out a knife and was busy dissecting a dead animal. Are they monsters? The moment the kid had pulled out the knife, I had thought of Obsidian, and then my mind had trailed to Devrim and Ezra.I hadn’t seen them in weeks. As soon as the doctor had given me a clean bil
“Get the fuck out!” Ezra sneered.I ignored him and made my way over to the bed, but he stepped in front of me and flashed his teeth. I growled at him, but he didn’t even flinch. My eyes narrowed and my fists clenched at my sides.“You’re not allowed in here,” he hissed.“I’m here to talk to Vanya,” I told him.He growled. “She doesn’t want to talk to you.”My eyes shot over his shoulder to her. Her head was bent, her hands clutching at the sheet. I sucked in a deep breath and closed my eyes. The sweet smell of her fear filled the room. She’s scared of me. “Vanya?”Her body jerked as if I’d struck her. Slowly, she raised her head, but she couldn’t look me in the eyes. Her eyes briefly glanced in my direction, then instantly lowered again. What little colour she had in her cheeks when I arrived was now gone.“Get out,” Ezra growled. “She doesn’t want to talk to you.”My eyes snap back to his. “I’m talking to her and not to you.”“She doesn’t want to fucking talk to you! What made you
There was no annoying beeping filling my ears. No machines attached to every possible inch of my body. Everything was silent which made me feel like I was alone, but I knew I wasn’t, because I could feel the comforting weight of another hand on mine.I wasn’t dead.I wasn’t alone. But I was in pain. The constant throbbing of my shoulder and the feeling of fire ants crawling all over my body was pulling me from my sleep.I didn’t want to wake up, because in my dreams, everything was okay. In my dreams, Obsidian was smiling at me, and Ezra had accepted the fact that Obsidian and Devrim loved each other. In my dreams, everything was perfect. But dreams only lasted so long before reality started creeping in and everything crumbled and the real world showed its ugly face.A soft sigh reached my ears, followed by the sound of a chair creaking. The weight on my hand disappeared, making emptiness fill me.I had fucked up and now I was all alone.“I know you’re awake, sugarplum.”I hesitated
It was all part of his plan.If Vanya died, I would be blamed for it. They’d kill me and every other pride member on the island. The humans would be turned against us by Reeves, because he was powerful enough to accomplish that.I knew he had been watching us. I knew he had seen me attacking Vanya.Small cameras had been set up in the corners. The entrance and exit had also been revealed numerous times when he entered and left. The gas he had used to knock me out in order to move me was something they had used in the facility. What was really worrying was the fact that he somehow got hold of the gas in the first place and that he knew so much about me.My eyes darted to one of the small vents I had seen hidden slightly from the human eye. It was how he was planning on knocking me out again.I was just waiting for the right time to strike. I paced back and forth next to Vanya’s unconscious body. Stopping, I licked at the deep wounds on her upper arms. A shudder raced through my body an
