Walking around the car, I took it from him and turned away.
One of the pride members had discovered a deserted car near the edge of town at a road that hadn’t been used in years. The back seat had blood on it that Devrim identified as Vanya’s.
According to the scents, Obsidian had been loaded into the back of the car where they stored the tools and spare wheels. Vanya was in the backseat, and the man who took them was the one who had driven the car.
Finding Vanya was much more important than worrying about Obsidian. The killer wouldn’t kill him, not yet anyway. But Vanya… he wanted her dead. He would kill her without a second thought, unless there was something else he had planned.
Like Devrim had pointed out earlier, the man smelled familiar, but I couldn’t place it either.
My eyes darted over to Devrim who was busy arguing with Reeves and Chief Curry. Some stupid human had called the police after spotting us sniffing around the car.
How could Devrim be so fucking stupid? He knew we needed to keep a close eye on Vanya after Betsy was kidnapped at the ball. I stilled as a thought hit me.
“Shit,” I hissed. “Fucking motherfucker.”
Spinning, I kicked at the car and then cursed some more as pain shot up my leg. Once the pain had faded, I stormed over to Devrim.
“It was a trap.” I gestured with my hand.
“What?” he questioned.
“Betsy. It was his fucking plan from the start. He knew we’d go searching for her. He knew that we’d leave Vanya’s side because Betsy was like a family to Vanya.”
Devrim’s brows dipped the longer he stared at me. I knew the moment he understood what I meant.
“You don’t think that he really took her?”
I shook my head. “He might have, but I don’t think he took her anywhere. I think Betsy’s still at the—”
“We searched the grounds,” Curry interrupted. “We searched every inch of it.”
“Do it again,” I growled. “He went back after your search was completed.”
“How do you know that?” Reeves took a step closer. “You’re part of it, aren’t you? Where’s my daughter?”
Devrim stepped in front of me and pressed a restraining hand to my chest when I moved. I sneered at him before I spun around and walked back to the car. As my hands curled into fists, I realized that I still held the camera.
I turned it over and over in my hands. There were a lot of buttons on it.
“Where did you find that?” Devrim questioned as he stopped next to me.
I nodded at the car. “I haven’t seen one of these before. The newer ones, yes, but this one is old.”
He took it from me and stared at it for a few seconds before he raised his head and glanced around.
“Find anything useful in the car?”
“Aside from the blood and this, nothing else.”
Devrim swallowed and ran a hand through his hair. “What you said makes sense, but how does Obsidian fit into all of this?”
“I’m not sure. Maybe he showed up while the human was busy kidnapping Vanya, but he got sedated before he could do anything?”
He shook his head. “But why take him with her? Why not leave him like he left the brothers?”
I shrugged and looked down at the camera. I had no idea why he’d take Obsidian with Vanya, but I had a bad feeling. A very bad feeling.
Devrim nodded. “I think I know someone who can help us with this.”

“Okay,” the youth muttered as he stepped back. “I’ve connected it to the TV. It was a bit of a struggle to find the right cables for it and figure out how it works since it’s older than what I’m used to.”
“Show me how it works and then leave us,” Devrim ordered.
A few minutes later, we were alone in the living room of the main house.
I pushed the troubling thoughts away and focused on the TV screen. There were a few meaningless videos of the sky and trees, along with some buildings in town.
But then, it got interesting.
The videos changed from nature to the town’s people, and then it changed again. Mayor Reeves and his Joy, followed by Vanya, lots of videos about Vanya.
Vanya at the hospital. Vanya returning home, and Vanya with Obsidian. It ended the day the body was found in her apartment.
We thought that it was all on the camera, but when Devrim accidentally hit a button, a few more videos appeared. Videos that made both of us tense.
“I’m going to kill him,” Devrim hissed.
“I’m with you on that,” I muttered. “But we need to find out if he posted this somewhere.”
Not only had he recorded us with Vanya, he had also recorded some of the couples breeding, and pride members as they shifted forms.
Before Devrim could utter a word, there was a soft knock on the door. He glanced at me as he made his way over to it.
“They f-found the woman, sir,” the kid stuttered. “You m-must come. She wants t-to talk.”
“Where is she?” Devrim questioned.
“T-the h-human hospital.”
“I’m coming.” He closed the door and turned to face me. “I’ll go question Betsy. You stay here and see if you can find anything else.”
I nodded. “Show me how this thing works first.”
We knew that the killer wanted Vanya dead because he thought that she would be able to identify him, but why had he kidnapped Obsidian with her?
He is defenceless. I could easily hurt him. To be honest, I had considered it, but then Devrim’s words flashed through my mind and pulled me out of my disturbing thoughts.Devrim had been right. But it didn’t make me fear Obsidian less.I sat in the chair a few feet from the bed, staring at the door as I waited for Devrim to return. Every passing second that he was away made my mind race with things that could go wrong.Darkness was creeping in on me, and I had no idea how to handle it.A whimper from the bed made my eyes snap over to it.Obsidian was on his stomach, clutching the pillow beneath his head as his big body trembled. The whimpers changed into growls that made my skin break out in goosebumps. The room suddenly fell silent again, but it didn’t last long.Rolling onto his back, Obsidian clutched at the sheets as his whimpers started up again. It got louder and louder.Tears filled my eyes.It sounded like he was in pain. What am I supposed to do? My eyes darted over to the
I think I’m going to pass out. After everything that had happened, I never thought that I would be returning to the cabin. My steps faltered when we reached the front door. Oblivious to my hesitation, Devrim opened the door and entered. As he turned to close it, his eyes locked on me. “Vanya?”When he told me that Obsidian was sick, the concern I felt had me agreeing to go with him, but standing outside the house made me second guess myself.I was about to face the man who had attacked me, the man who haunted my dreams, and not in a good way.Swallowing, I took a step forward, but my muscles tensed, preventing me from moving.“What’s wrong?” Devrim asked as he walked over to me. “You’ve gone pale.”“I…” My words trailed off when movement behind him caught my attention. My knees weakened when a wave of fear hit me. I wasn’t ready to see him yet!Panic hit next.If Devrim hadn’t grabbed hold of my arms, I would have run away.“Rosebud—”“I don’t want to see him,” I blurted.“Please, Va
What are monsters? The imaginary creatures we were sure hid under our beds? Were they the creatures that the authors and filmmakers created? Maybe the stories told to scare us were monsters in their own way? Or maybe the adults who told us those stories were the real monsters?A monster was cruel and evil.A monster was someone who found joy in hurting others. Like those men who hid in the shadows, waiting for a woman or man to come along. A monster was someone who killed without a second thought.I sniffed and reached up to wipe the tears from my cheeks. No matter how much I tried, I couldn’t pull my eyes away from the group of kids in the alley below me. I had spotted them the moment they entered. One of them had pulled out a knife and was busy dissecting a dead animal. Are they monsters? The moment the kid had pulled out the knife, I had thought of Obsidian, and then my mind had trailed to Devrim and Ezra.I hadn’t seen them in weeks. As soon as the doctor had given me a clean bil
“Get the fuck out!” Ezra sneered.I ignored him and made my way over to the bed, but he stepped in front of me and flashed his teeth. I growled at him, but he didn’t even flinch. My eyes narrowed and my fists clenched at my sides.“You’re not allowed in here,” he hissed.“I’m here to talk to Vanya,” I told him.He growled. “She doesn’t want to talk to you.”My eyes shot over his shoulder to her. Her head was bent, her hands clutching at the sheet. I sucked in a deep breath and closed my eyes. The sweet smell of her fear filled the room. She’s scared of me. “Vanya?”Her body jerked as if I’d struck her. Slowly, she raised her head, but she couldn’t look me in the eyes. Her eyes briefly glanced in my direction, then instantly lowered again. What little colour she had in her cheeks when I arrived was now gone.“Get out,” Ezra growled. “She doesn’t want to talk to you.”My eyes snap back to his. “I’m talking to her and not to you.”“She doesn’t want to fucking talk to you! What made you
There was no annoying beeping filling my ears. No machines attached to every possible inch of my body. Everything was silent which made me feel like I was alone, but I knew I wasn’t, because I could feel the comforting weight of another hand on mine.I wasn’t dead.I wasn’t alone. But I was in pain. The constant throbbing of my shoulder and the feeling of fire ants crawling all over my body was pulling me from my sleep.I didn’t want to wake up, because in my dreams, everything was okay. In my dreams, Obsidian was smiling at me, and Ezra had accepted the fact that Obsidian and Devrim loved each other. In my dreams, everything was perfect. But dreams only lasted so long before reality started creeping in and everything crumbled and the real world showed its ugly face.A soft sigh reached my ears, followed by the sound of a chair creaking. The weight on my hand disappeared, making emptiness fill me.I had fucked up and now I was all alone.“I know you’re awake, sugarplum.”I hesitated
It was all part of his plan.If Vanya died, I would be blamed for it. They’d kill me and every other pride member on the island. The humans would be turned against us by Reeves, because he was powerful enough to accomplish that.I knew he had been watching us. I knew he had seen me attacking Vanya.Small cameras had been set up in the corners. The entrance and exit had also been revealed numerous times when he entered and left. The gas he had used to knock me out in order to move me was something they had used in the facility. What was really worrying was the fact that he somehow got hold of the gas in the first place and that he knew so much about me.My eyes darted to one of the small vents I had seen hidden slightly from the human eye. It was how he was planning on knocking me out again.I was just waiting for the right time to strike. I paced back and forth next to Vanya’s unconscious body. Stopping, I licked at the deep wounds on her upper arms. A shudder raced through my body an
