After Rachel said her father wanted her to leave, Jace took it off speakerphone and held the phone to his ear. I was curious about what she was saying, but since I didn’t have supernatural hearing, I couldn’t eavesdrop. Only getting a few short words from what Jace was saying, I couldn’t really follow along.

During the call, I could see his jaw muscles tighten and relax repeatedly. It didn’t take much to figure out that he wasn’t happy with what he was hearing. My heart sank to my stomach when he got off the phone because I knew I was going to need to let him go. It wasn’t because I had feelings for him, but it was because I viewed him as a friend.
