CHAPTER 18: THE FIRST CRY

The cry was small, but it filled the entire bunker.

It was not the squeak from before. It was not the tiny cough or the sneeze that EVA said was normal for a premature infant. This was a real cry. Angry, hungry, alive. It came from the food warmer in the medical bay, from a baby who weighed only 1.4 kilograms, who had stopped breathing an hour ago, who had been pronounced 24.8 percent Thorne, who had lost her father yesterday near the Seattle safe zone border without ever knowing his name.

Tiny Elena Thorne Cole was crying.

Bianca was frozen over the incubator, hands hovering in the air, afraid to touch, afraid not to touch. Her face was swollen from crying, her hair stuck to her forehead with sweat, her hospital gown damp. She had been in labor for nine hours during the worst solar storm in ten years, she had pushed a child out while the world burned outside, and now she did not know what to do with a crying baby.

"Elena!" she shouted, voice cracking. "Killian! She is crying! Real crying!"

I was already running. My belly made running hard. Two boys inside, both kicking at the same time whenever I moved too fast. EVA said twins kick harder when the mother is stressed, and I was stressed. My heart was at 112 beats per minute. Killian had one hand under my elbow, supporting me, half carrying me down the short hallway from our private room to the medical bay. His boots were silent on the metal floor, mine were bare. The bunker was cold, always cold, 19 degrees Celsius, because EVA kept it that way to save power and to slow bacteria. But the medical bay was warm, 26 degrees, for the baby.

We pushed through the door.

Damian was there too. He had come out of Storage Room B despite his fever. His face was red, eyes glassy, temperature 38.6 now. He leaned against the doorframe, breathing hard. He should not have been there, he was contagious, but no one had the heart to tell him to leave when a baby was crying for the first time.

Bianca looked at me, desperate. "What do I do? She is crying! Is that bad? EVA said premature babies should not cry too much, they lose energy!"

EVA answered before I could. Her calm, flat voice came from the ceiling speaker.

"Analysis. Infant Elena Thorne . Weight 1.42 kilograms, up 20 grams from birth weight. Heart rate 158 beats per minute, within normal range for crying premature infant. Oxygen saturation 94 percent, stable. Crying duration 42 seconds, intensity moderate. This is positive sign. Lung development improved since earlier apnea event. Recommend skin-to-skin contact with mother, Bianca Cole, to regulate temperature and calm infant. Recommend feeding attempt in ten minutes."

Skin-to-skin. Kangaroo care. I remembered reading about it before the fever, before the apocalypse, when I was still trying to get pregnant and reading every baby book in Seattle.

"Bianca, take off your gown top, put her on your chest," I said. "Direct skin. Your heartbeat will calm her."

Bianca stared. "But... I am not clean. I sweated..."

"You are her mother. You are clean enough. Wash hands and chest quick. EVA, warm blanket."

EVA lowered a warmed blanket from the dispenser. Bianca washed her hands and chest with the sterile wipes, hands shaking so hard she dropped two wipes on the floor. Damian bent to pick them up, but Killian stopped him with a look. Damian was too sick to touch anything sterile.

I opened the incubator myself. The warm air hit my face. Tiny Elena was red-faced, mouth open wide, fists tiny as blueberries, crying with all the strength her 1.4 kilogram body could find. She was beautiful. Even with the tubes, even with the too-big diaper, even with the hospital bands that said COLE, E - 1.4KG - FEMALE, she was beautiful because she was alive.

I lifted her. She weighed nothing. Nothing at all. Lighter than a book. Lighter than my own belly. I placed her on Bianca's bare chest.

The moment her skin touched Bianca's skin, the cry changed. It did not stop immediately, it softened, like a radio being turned down. Bianca's hands, large compared to the baby, cupped her back. Her chest rose and fell, and Tiny Elena's chest rose and fell with it, syncing. Mother and daughter breathing together.

"There," I whispered. "There you go."

Bianca started crying again, but quietly this time. "She is warm. She is so warm. I thought... when she stopped breathing, I thought I killed her. Because I... because of what I did in Seattle..."

"Stop," Killian said, low. His voice made Bianca flinch, but he was not angry. He was tired. "My brother made a choice. You made a choice. The child did not make a choice. She is here. She breathes. That is what matters."

Damian from the doorway said, "Keon... Keon Thorne... did he... did he suffer? When he died yesterday?"

Killian did not look at him. He kept his eyes on the baby on Bianca's chest. "Drone footage shows he was bitten three times. Leg, arm, shoulder. He ran 200 meters after. He was trying to reach the old highway to the bunker. He fell near a burned car. The infected left him. He bled out. It took 11 minutes. EVA timed it."

Eleven minutes. I closed my eyes. Eleven minutes alone on a road in Seattle, bleeding, knowing you have a daughter you never met.

"He knew about Bianca?" I asked.

"He suspected. He said the woman at the bar told him her boyfriend left her for his pregnant wife, but actually the wife was not pregnant, it was lie. He remembered because she cried for an hour. He felt guilty for leaving her in the room even if he did not touch her. Then three weeks ago he called me, said his fever came back, and said, 'If a woman named Bianca comes, with a baby, it might be mine. Don't punish the baby for my mistake.' He made me promise."

Bianca sobbed louder, holding Tiny Elena tighter. "He remembered me? He remembered my name?"

"He remembered you cried. He said you wore a blue dress. He said you kept saying 'He said I am barren, he said his wife is barren.' He did not understand. He thought you were the wife."

I remembered that blue dress. I had seen a photo of Bianca in a blue dress on Damian's phone a year ago, before everything broke. She looked happy then.

The baby stopped crying. Completely. She was asleep on Bianca's chest, mouth open, breathing fast but steady. Skin-to-skin worked.

EVA spoke again. "Vital signs stabilizing for both mother and infant. Bianca Cole heart rate decreasing from 108 to 92. Infant heart rate decreasing from 158 to 142. Recommendation: Maintain contact for minimum one hour. Damian Cole, your fever is 38.7, you need to return to isolation. You are risking infection to newborn."

Damian nodded, but did not move right away. He looked at the baby on Bianca's chest, then at my belly where two boys kicked.

"Elena," he said to me. "When your two boys are born... will you let me... will you let me stay to see them? Even as worker? Not as father, not as anything. Just as... as man who wants to see what a real family looks like? Because I never saw it before. My mother told me family is about blood and name. But here... here family is about who stays when baby stops breathing."

My throat was tight. Two boys kicked hard, as if they heard him.

Killian answered for me, hand on my shoulder. "You stay 30 days. You work. You take antibiotics. If after 30 days your fever is gone and you work hard and you do not cause drama, you can ask Elena again. Elena decides family. Not me. Not your mother. Elena."

Elena. Me. Deciding family.

Six months ago I was the woman who could not get pregnant, who sat in a doctor's office in Seattle while a doctor said "unexplained infertility," who watched her husband leave with her friend because her friend was pregnant. Now I was the woman who decided who stayed in a bunker during the end of the world, who carried two sons, who held a niece named after her.

"I will think about it," I said to Damian. "But first, you need to live. Go back to storage, take medicine, sleep. If you die of fever, you cannot see anything."

He smiled, a real smile this time, weak. "Yes, ma'am."

He left. Door closed. Isolation light turned red.

Bianca looked up at me, baby asleep on her chest. "Elena, thank you. For letting Damian touch her bear. For not hating me. I sent you terrible messages. I called you barren on your birthday. You should hate me."

"I did hate you," I said honestly. "For two months I hated you so much I could not eat. Then the fever came, and the world ended, and I learned hate takes too much space in a bunker. We have only 200 square meters. I need that space for my two sons. So I leave hate outside. Outside is full of infected. Inside, we try."

Bianca nodded, tears falling onto Tiny Elena's head. "I will earn it. I will work. I will tell truth every day. I will tell Tiny Elena when she grows that she is named after a strong woman who forgave her mother."

Killian squeezed my hand. "My sons kicked again," he whispered. "They heard you. They know their mother is strong."

EVA interrupted, as always, with data.

"Update. Seattle safe zone radio signal increased by 14 percent in last hour. Message repeating: 'Cure research phase two complete. Safe zones expanding. All survivors with bunker codes report to sector 7. Repeat, safe zones expanding.'"

Safe zones expanding. Cure phase two complete. After nine months of apocalypse, the world was trying to come back.

I looked at Tiny Elena asleep on her mother, at my belly with two boys who would be born into a world that might be rebuilding, at Killian who lost a brother yesterday and gained a niece today.

"EVA, record this," I said. "Day 87 of apocalypse. Infant Elena Thorne cried for first time. Real cry. Weight 1.42 kilograms. Father Keon Thorne died yesterday trying to reach us. Mother Bianca Cole holding her skin-to-skin. Father figure Damian Cole in isolation with fever 38.7. Mother Elena Thorne pregnant with two sons, five months. Bunker father Killian Thorne standing. We are alive. We are family. End record."

EVA: "Recorded."

Tiny Elena sneezed in her sleep, and kept sleeping.

Outside, the Seattle wind howled over the burned highway where her father died yesterday. Inside, she was warm.

The next day, I woke up feeling happy.Yesterday was a good day. Nobody fought. Everybody was calm. Damian even helped Bianca. I thought maybe he had really changed.I was wrong.I woke up in Killian's arms again. He was already awake, watching me."Good morning, my love," he whispered. He kissed my forehead."Good morning," I said. I smiled. "Today I feel strong. The twins did not disturb me too much last night."He smiled. "Good. That means they slept well."He helped me to sit up. He held my back."Eva," he said, "turn on the camera and audio for our room."But Eva did not answer.Killian frowned. "Eva?"Still no answer. The room was quiet. The small light on the wall was not blinking like it used to.Killian stood up. He walked to the speaker. "Eva, are you there?"Nothing.I looked at him. "Killian, what happened to Eva?"He shook his head. "I don't know. Let me check."He walked to the main room. I followed him slowly.Leo was already awake. Bianca was holding Tiny Elena. Damian

I slept in the afternoon. Not deep sleep. Just small rest, the way Killian always tells me to rest. His hand was still on my belly when I woke up. He had not left me.He was sitting beside the bed, watching me. When he saw my eyes open, he smiled."You are awake, my love," he said softly. "Did you sleep well?""yes, I did," I said. "The twins were kicking me. I think they don't want me to sleep."He laughed small. "They are like their father. Stubborn."I laughed too. "Killian, so you know that you're stubborn."He helped me to sit up slowly. He held my back, the way he always does. He gave me water. Eva had already prepared warm water through the automated kitchen. Killian brought it to me himself. He does not let anyone else to bring water for me. He likes to bring it himself."Drink slowly," he said.I drank slowly. He watched me."Eva," he said, "turn on the camera and audio for the main room."Eva answered, "Yes, Killian. Main room camera on."We could hear Leo laughing in the ma

The door closed behind them.I stood there for a few seconds, just looking at the door. My hand was still in the air, where Killian's hand was before.I felt empty immediately. Even though I know he will come back, my heart always beats fast when he goes outside.Bianca looked at me. "Are you okay?" she asked.I nodded. "Yes. I am okay. I just... I always worry when he goes out.""I understand," she said. "I used to worry like that too."Leo pulled my dress small. "Elena, don't worry. Killian is strong. He will beat everybody."I smiled. "I know, Leo. He is strong."I sat down slowly on the chair. My belly was heavy this morning. The twins were moving small small. I placed my hand on my belly to calm them."Eva," I said, "show me outside camera."Eva answered, "Yes, Elena. Showing outside camera now."The small screen on the wall came on. I could see Killian and Damian walking outside. The outside was quiet. The sun was just coming up. The road was empty. No raiders. No noise. Only th

  • REBORN 7 DAYS BEFORE MY BILLIONAIRE HUSBAND LEFT ME TO DIE    CHAPTER 29: THE MORNING AFTER

CHAPTER 29: THE MORNING AFTERI woke up slowly. The room was still dim. The soft light from the wall was still on low, the way Killian likes it at night. I did not open my eyes at first. I just stayed there, listening. His breathing was steady. His arm was still around me. His hand was still on my belly. He had not moved all night.I opened my eyes a little. He was awake and was looking at me."Good morning, my love," he whispered.I smiled. "Good morning. You still did not sleep?"He smiled back. "I didn't sleep much. But I woke up early to watch you. You were sleeping like an angel again."I laughed small. "Killian, you always say that.""Because it is true," he said. He kissed my forehead. "How is your body? Did the twins disturb you at night?""just a little" I said. "They kicked once, then they slept again. I think they like sleeping on your chest too."He laughed. His laugh was low and soft, so it would not wake the whole bunker. He rubbed my belly slowly, in small circles. "Goo

  • REBORN 7 DAYS BEFORE MY BILLIONAIRE HUSBAND LEFT ME TO DIE    CHAPTER 29: BACK TO OUR ROOM

It was bedtime in Bunker 3.Everyone had already cleaned up. The day had been long and heavy, and the bunker finally felt quiet. Killian had washed off the mud from the run. Leo had washed his hands and face, and his shoes were by the door drying. Damian had wiped his pipe clean and kept it beside him. Bianca had changed Tiny Elena's small cloth, and the baby was now resting peacefully. The generator was steady. Eva had dimmed the lights for the night, and the whole bunker had that soft, sleepy feeling.I was in the inner room with Bianca and little Elena to make sure that her body is finally calm and at the same I was waiting for Killian to finish up so we can go back to our room. Tiny Elena was asleep on Bianca's chest. Her fever had gone down. Her little chain was still around her neck, resting gently against Bianca's skin. Bianca looked tired, but she looked peaceful too, the way a mother looks when her baby is finally sleeping. Then Killian came in.He did not whisper. He spoke

  • REBORN 7 DAYS BEFORE MY BILLIONAIRE HUSBAND LEFT ME TO DIE    CHAPTER 27: THE INCUBATOR

The drum changed everything. After Killian dragged it in and Damian sealed the three locks, Eva connected the fuel line herself. She is not just a voice on the speaker. She has arms in the walls. She plugged it in, checked the pressure, and the generator stopped coughing. The yellow light got brighter. Not bright like before the world ended, but steady. No more flicker."Power stable at 68%," Eva said. "We can run the incubator now."Bianca looked up from the mattress. Tiny Elena was in her arms, burning up. Her little body was hot, too hot. She had been crying in that small, tired way for hours, and her breathing was fast."We need to build it now," Bianca said.Killian was already moving. He had been saving parts for this for weeks — a clear plastic box from the old clinic, a small heater, some wires, a soft blanket. Damian, even with his arm still sore from the Day 1 bite, helped him carry the box to the inner room. Today is Day 88, he is almost recovered, so he could lift with one
