CHAPTER TWO: THE MAN WHO KNELT

last update Date de publication: 2026-07-24 01:04:41

The ballroom doors swung open.

A cold breeze swept through the hall as every conversation died instantly.

Outside, fifty identical black Rolls-Royces stretched down the street like a royal procession.

Men in tailored black suits stepped out in perfect formation, each wearing an earpiece. Their expressions were emotionless, their movements disciplined.

Then the back door of the first limousine opened.

A pair of polished black shoes touched the ground.

The man who emerged carried himself with quiet authority. He was tall, impeccably dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, with sharp features and piercing gray eyes that seemed to miss nothing.

A murmur spread through the guests.

“That’s Damien Blackwood…”

“It can’t be…”

“Why would the chairman of Blackwood Global come here?”

“Ethan doesn’t have the status to invite someone like him.”

Even Ethan’s confident expression faltered.

Damien Blackwood rarely attended public events. He was known as the billionaire who could make or destroy companies with a single decision.

Yet here he was.

And he wasn’t looking at Ethan.

He wasn’t looking at the guests.

His eyes were fixed on Sophia.

Sophia frowned, confused.

Do I know him?

Damien walked into the ballroom, his bodyguards following several steps behind before stopping.

He continued alone.

The silence became suffocating.

He stopped directly in front of Sophia.

Without saying a word…

He slowly bent one knee.

Then the other.

The most powerful businessman in the country knelt before a woman who had just been abandoned by her husband.

Gasps echoed across the ballroom.

“No…”

“Did he just kneel?”

“This has to be a dream.”

Vanessa grabbed Ethan’s arm.

“Why is he kneeling to her?”

Ethan couldn’t answer.

Damien lowered his head respectfully.

“Miss Sophia Kingsley…”

His deep voice carried across the room.

“My name is Damien Blackwood.”

“I have searched for you for twenty-six years.”

Sophia blinked.

“You’ve mistaken me for someone else.”

Damien looked up.

“I never make that mistake.”

He reached into his jacket and removed an old photograph.

The picture showed a smiling little girl no older than four, standing between a handsome couple.

The little girl’s face…

Looked exactly like Sophia.

Her breathing became uneven.

“Where… did you get this?”

“It was taken three days before your parents disappeared.”

Sophia’s hands shook.

“My parents died in a car accident.”

Damien’s gaze darkened.

“That is what they wanted you to believe.”

The room exploded into whispers.

“What is happening?”

“Didn’t she grow up in an orphanage?”

“Who exactly is she?”

Damien stood and nodded toward one of his assistants.

The assistant stepped forward carrying a polished wooden briefcase.

Click.

The locks opened.

Inside were neatly arranged documents bearing official seals.

Damien handed the first file to Sophia.

“Your original birth certificate.”

She stared at it.

Her fingers trembled as she read the words.

Name: Sophia Amelia Kingsley.

Father: Alexander Kingsley.

Mother: Isabella Kingsley.

Her vision blurred.

“This…”

“This isn’t possible.”

“It is,” Damien replied calmly.

“You were kidnapped twenty-two years ago.”

“The people who raised you were never your biological family.”

A loud laugh interrupted the moment.

Ethan stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.”

He looked at Damien with forced confidence.

“Mr. Blackwood, surely someone has deceived you.”

“My ex-wife is an orphan.”

“I’ve known her for seven years.”

Damien slowly turned toward him.

“You know nothing about her.”

Ethan folded his arms.

“If she’s truly some missing heiress, prove it.”

Damien gave a faint smile.

“I expected you to say that.”

He nodded once.

Another assistant entered carrying a sleek silver case.

Inside was a portable DNA testing device.

The technician spoke calmly.

“Miss Kingsley.”

“If you permit us, we can compare your DNA with samples preserved by the Kingsley family.”

“It will take less than fifteen minutes.”

Every eye in the ballroom turned to Sophia.

She looked down at the photograph again.

The smiling child.

The loving parents.

The face…

It was hers.

For the first time in years, tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

“What if…”

She whispered.

“What if everything I’ve ever believed is a lie?”

Damien’s voice softened.

“Then let us show you the truth.”

Sophia slowly extended her trembling hand toward the DNA technician.

“I’ll do it.”

The technician collected the sample.

The machine powered on.

A countdown appeared on the screen.

15:00

Fifteen minutes.

Fifteen minutes until the truth that would change Sophia’s life forever.

But across the ballroom, hidden behind a marble pillar, a man in a black cap quietly raised his phone.

He made a call.

“They found her.”

There was a brief silence before a cold voice answered.

“Then don’t let her leave that building alive.”
