I tried to stand. A hand shoved me back down. My palms scraped against the stone again, fresh pain blooming across my already raw skin.

"Where do you think you're going, reject?"

“Don’t call me that,” I replied.

The female snickered. "Ohhh I’m so scared. And what will you do? Even your fated mate didn't want you. What does that say about you?"

The other male laughed. "She's too big. I wouldn't want her either. Look at her. Disgusting."

The female spoke again. "Did you really think someone like Kael Moore would want someone like you? You're delusional."

The words hit deeper than they normally would. I was already bleeding from the rejection, and these bullies were pouring salt into the wound.

‘Don't listen to them,’ Zayna said, stirring inside me, trying to comfort me. ‘He wasn't worth you anyway. You're stronger than this. He's a blind jerk. A coward. You deserve better.’

But it didn't help. Their words settled into my bones, confirming everything I'd always believed about myself. Everything Lily had told me. Everything my pack had whispered. Everything I saw in the mirror I refused to look at.

Maybe they were right. Maybe everyone was right. Maybe I was too big. Too ugly. Too pathetic. Maybe the universe had made a mistake with me.

No.

Something snapped inside me. Something I'd been holding back for years. Years of being a doormat. Years of taking the hits and walking away. Years of letting people destroy me because I believed I deserved it.

Not anymore.

"Fuck off," I spat.

The words came out sharp, surprising even me. The three students blinked, clearly not expecting me to fight back.

"What did you just say?" the male who'd tripped me demanded.

I pushed myself to my feet, ignoring the sting in my palms, the ache in my knees. "I said fuck off. Are you deaf or just stupid?"

The female's eyes narrowed. "You think you can talk to us like that, reject? You're nothing. You've always been nothing. And your mate—"

"I said. Fuck. Off."

My voice cracked on the last word. I was shaking. Furious and embarrassed. But I was also tired. So fucking tired of being everyone's punching bag.

The male stepped closer, his wolf surging beneath his skin. His eyes flashed red. "You're going to regret that."

I braced myself. I knew what was coming. I'd been hit before. This would be no different.

But then-

"Enough."

The voice cut through the courtyard like a blade. Cold. Commanding. Absolute.

The three students froze. Their wolves cowered instinctively, submitting to whatever presence had just arrived.

I turned my head.

A man stood a few feet away, his silver eyes fixed on the bullies with an expression that could have frozen fire. He was tall, lean, with sharp cheekbones and dark hair that fell across his forehead in careless waves.

He wore the black and silver robes of a professor, but there was something about him that seemed... more. More powerful. More dangerous. More everything.

Professor Felix.

I'd seen him on the dais during orientation. He'd been one of the faculty members watching the Mate Ceremony. But up close, he was devastatingly handsome. The kind of handsome that made your breath catch and your brain short-circuit.

I dismissed it immediately. I was too broken to care about something like that.

"Professor Felix," the female bully stammered. "We were just—"

"You were just leaving," he said. His voice was calm, quiet, and somehow more terrifying than if he'd shouted. "Were you not?"

The students scrambled. They muttered apologies, bowed their heads, and scattered like leaves in a storm.

And then it was just me and him.

Professor Felix turned his silver eyes on me. They studied me. He offered me his hand. I hesitated. Kindness always came with strings. I'd learned that lesson the hard way.

But my palms were scraped and bleeding, and I didn't think I could stand on my own. So I took his hand.

His grip was warm. Steady. He pulled me to my feet with surprising gentleness.

"Are you okay?" he asked.

"I'm fine." The lie came automatically. I'd been saying it for years. "I'm fine."

His lips curved into something that wasn't quite a smile. "Fine? After being rejected by your mate?"

My cheeks burned. Of course he knew. Everyone knew. The gossip had already spread like wildfire.

"Right," I muttered, looking away. "Everyone knows how pathetic I am."

‘You're not pathetic,’ my wolf growled internally. ‘He's the pathetic one. He's the one who walked away. He's the one who didn't have the courage to-’

I pushed her voice down. I couldn't deal with her anger right now. I could barely deal with my own.

"I'm fine," I said again. Firmer this time. As though maybe if I said it enough, it would become true.

Professor Felix studied me for a long moment. His silver eyes seemed to see right through me, past the mask I'd spent years perfecting, straight to the crushed girl underneath.

"You are not," he said quietly. "You've just gotten used to telling everyone that."

I stilled.

No one had ever said that to me before. No one had ever seen through the mask. People only saw what I wanted them to see. I’d made sure of that.

My throat tightened. I didn't know what to say.

"Follow me," Professor Felix said.

And then he turned and walked away, clearly expecting me to obey.

I spread my legs. Maybe I shouldn’t have. But it didn’t matter now, not when I was bared for him already. My mind was a blur of fear and want and something I couldn't name. Then I felt Felix's fingers brush against my inner thigh. His touch was featherlight, teasing."Look at you," he murmured, and I could hear the smile in his voice. "Soaking wet for me already. And you tried to lie to me.""P-professor F-Felix-" I started, but the words died in my throat as his fingers finally found me.I gasped. His touch was gentle but firm, sliding through my wetness with an ease that made my cheeks burn."Shh," he murmured. "Just feel. Don't think. Just feel."His fingers traced slow circles around my clit, and my hips bucked involuntarily. The sensation was overwhelming, too much and not enough all at once."Look how your body responds to me," he said, his voice low and rough. "You're dripping for me. Isn't that right?"I couldn't speak. Could barely breathe. I nodded frantically."Words, hun.

I didn't move.I couldn't. My body was frozen, caught between every instinct screaming at me to run and something deeper, something I'd never felt before, urging me to stay.No one had ever wanted me. Not even my own mate. At least not like this. Not with the kind of raw, undeniable desire I could still feel behind me.But he was my professor. Could I do this? Could I let this man, this stranger, see me the way no one else ever had?I almost regretted talking back.Almost."I won't repeat myself," Felix said. His voice was calm. Measured. But there was an edge to it that made my stomach flip.‘You have two options.’ My wolf's voice cut through the chaos in my mind. ‘You run. Or you finally feel something we've lacked all our lives.’I wanted to run. I wanted to flee this room, this man, this terrifying possibility and pretend none of this had happened. But I also wanted him to touch me. To fuck me. To take something no one had ever desired to take.I just… I just needed to be craved.

I followed him.I didn't know why. My instincts screamed at me to run, to find a dark corner to hide in, to disappear until the humiliation faded. But my feet carried me forward, trailing behind Professor Felix like I had no choice in the matter.Maybe I didn't.He led me through winding corridors, past portraits of ancient werewolves, up a narrow staircase I hadn't noticed before. The academy was a labyrinth, and I was following a stranger into its depths.Stupid. This is so stupid. But I kept walking anyway. He stopped in front of a heavy oak door and pushed it open. Inside was a study—warm and inviting, nothing like the cold stone corridors we'd just walked through. Bookshelves lined every wall, filled with leather-bound volumes that smelled of age and knowledge. A fire crackled in the hearth, casting golden light across a large mahogany desk and two leather armchairs. The room felt safe. Comfortable.I didn't trust it."Why did you bring me here?" The words came out sharper than

The sound echoed in the empty corridor, too loud, too final. My heart pounded so hard I could feel it in my throat. I'd spent the entire walk here convincing myself this was the right decision. That I deserved answers. That maybe, just maybe, I'd been wrong about what I'd seen in his eyes. The door swung open.Kael stood before me, golden eyes widening in surprise. He'd changed out of his formal uniform, wearing only a loose white shirt and dark trousers. His hair was slightly damp, as if he'd just washed his face."Emery," he said, and the sound of my name on his lips sent a shiver down my spine. "What are you doing here?""I need to talk to you." My voice came out steadier than I felt. "About the ceremony. About what happened."His jaw tightened. "There's nothing to talk about.""There is." I stepped forward, and to my surprise, he stepped back. Let me in. "You felt it. I know you did. The bond. We're-""Don't." His voice was sharp, but there was something underneath it. Something t

The gates of Blackthorn Academy rose out of the fog like something out of a legend. Wrought iron twisted into wolves howling at the moon, stone pillars carved with ancient runes that pulsed with faint silver light as our carriage rolled past them.I felt it before I understood what I was feeling. A prickle down my arms, sharp and electric, like static gathering before a storm. For one heartbeat, I could have sworn the runes brightened as we passed, just slightly, but enough that I turned to see if anyone else had noticed. No one had. Lily was too busy adjusting her gloves to look at anything but her own reflection in the carriage window. It’s just your imagination, I told myself. You're exhausted, you're terrified, and you're hoping for a miracle. That's all this is.I smoothed my dress over my hips instead of dwelling on it. Navy blue. Simple. The best I could afford. I'd saved for months, skipped meals, told myself I didn't need new shoes when my old ones still had a few months left
