VIVIENNE'S WARNING

Vivienne Hale had always been good at reading rooms, and the room she walked into that evening — Damian's penthouse, lights low, half a bottle of scotch already gone from the decanter on his desk — told her everything she needed to know before he said a single word.

"You've been distracted since that meeting," she said, closing the door behind her. "Don't insult me by pretending otherwise."

Damian didn't look up from the window. "It's not what you think."

"It's exactly what I think." Vivienne crossed the room and poured herself a glass, unbothered, because three years of a political engagement had a way of stripping away the pretense of surprise. "Elena Marsh walked back into your life today, and I felt the bond flare from two floors away. Do you think I haven't noticed you've barely spoken to me in a week?"

He finally turned to face her, and whatever he saw in her expression made him pause. Not jealousy, exactly. Something colder. Calculating.

"You knew," he said slowly. "About the bond. This whole time."

"Of course I knew, Damian. Rejected mate bonds are supposed to sever cleanly. Yours never did. I've felt the scar tissue of it every time we've stood in the same room together for three years." Vivienne's smile was thin, humorless. "I chose not to mention it because, unlike you, I understand the value of patience."

"Then why marry me at all, if you knew the bond was never fully dead?"

"Because our marriage was never about your bond, Damian. It was about territory, resources, and my family's very specific interests." Vivienne set her glass down with deliberate precision. "But I'll admit, things have gotten more complicated than a simple political alliance now that Elena Marsh has apparently returned with a Fortune 500 company and — from what my sources tell me — something in her blood that's making certain very old, very dangerous families take notice."

Damian went still. "What do you know?"

"I know more than you'd like, and less than I need." Vivienne studied him with the patient, predatory calm of someone who had spent her entire life navigating pack politics. "My family has spent generations tracking bloodline rumors precisely because they're valuable currency. An Ashwood reawakening isn't just gossip in certain circles, Damian. It's the kind of news that starts wars."

"How long have you known what she is?"

"I suspected the moment I heard about a rejected omega whose eyes turned gold at a territory border three years ago. Word travels, even when elders try to keep it quiet." Vivienne's expression sharpened. "I've kept that information to myself out of, let's call it, strategic patience. But patience has limits, Damian, and my family has already begun asking questions about why the merger negotiations with Solaris Dynamics haven't been shut down."

"You're threatening to expose her."

"I'm warning you that other people already suspect, and my restraint has a price." Vivienne stepped closer, her voice dropping low and hard. "End the merger talks. Send Elena Marsh back to whatever corner of the human world she crawled out of, quietly, before word reaches packs who won't be nearly as gentle about it as I've been. Do that, and I'll make sure my family's interest in her bloodline goes no further than this room."

"And if I don't?"

Vivienne's smile turned cold. "Then I stop protecting a secret that isn't mine to protect, and you can explain to your council why the last living Ashwood descendant is suddenly the most hunted woman in three territories — because you couldn't let go of a rejection you apparently regretted the moment you made it."

She turned and walked toward the door, pausing only once, her hand on the handle.

"For what it's worth, Damian, I don't actually want to see her hurt. I'm not the villain in this. But I have my own reasons for needing this marriage to happen, reasons that have nothing to do with you, and I will protect my family's interests by whatever means necessary." She glanced back at him, something almost sympathetic flickering behind the calculation in her eyes. "You have one week to convince Elena to walk away from Ravenshade. After that, I can't promise what happens next — because my family won't be the only ones who've started asking questions."

The door clicked shut behind her, and Damian stood alone in his penthouse, the city lights blurring beyond the window, understanding with sick clarity that the rejection he'd thought was the worst mistake of his life had only been the beginning.

  • THE ASHWOOD LEGACY    ELENA AND DAMIAN

Late that same evening, Elena found Damian on their private terrace — the same terrace, she realized with a pang of old memory, where he'd once confessed his love for her nineteen years earlier, moments before everything had exploded into violence."You're thinking about that night," she said, joining him at the railing. "I can tell.""The parallels are hard to ignore." Damian's voice carried old weight, tangled with fresh worry for their daughter. "Watching Aurelia face down a threat because of who she is, watching her power awaken under crisis, watching us have to decide, in real time, whether fear or trust would guide our choices." He glanced at her. "We chose differently than my mother did. I keep waiting for that choice to prove itself wrong.""It hasn't," Elena said firmly. "Aurelia trusted Rowan, and Rowan proved himself just as trustworthy as she believed. Seraphine chose loyalty to genuine connection over faction politics, and that choice may have saved our daughter's life. T

  • THE ASHWOOD LEGACY    A QUIET MOMENT

Amid the mounting tension of the ongoing hunt for Marcus, Aurelia and Rowan found small pockets of ordinary peace — a rare, precious commodity given everything unfolding around them."Show me your sketchbook," Aurelia said, one evening, finding him alone in the training compound's quiet garden, a worn leather book resting unopened on his lap. "You promised, remember? Back before all of this started."Rowan hesitated, old vulnerability crossing his features, before finally handing the book over. Aurelia paged through carefully rendered landscapes — mountain ranges she didn't recognize, quiet forest clearings, a handful of rough portrait studies that included, she realized with a soft jolt, an unmistakable sketch of her own face, drawn with measured, tender attention to detail."When did you draw this?""The night after the summit attack," he admitted, color rising in his cheeks. "I couldn't stop thinking about you. Drawing helped me process it, I think. Or maybe I just wanted an excuse

  • THE ASHWOOD LEGACY    THE HUNT BEGINS

Two weeks passed with no trace of Marcus Vane, his careful disappearance frustrating every combined effort from Cross, Ashgrove, and Ashwood security forces working together for the first time in the alliance's history."He's gone underground," Kade reported, during a strategy session that had become a regular fixture of Aurelia's week since the council session attack. "No scent trails, no financial activity, nothing. Whoever's helping him hide knows precisely how to avoid detection.""That suggests outside support," Seraphine said grimly. "Marcus didn't act entirely alone within my faction, but I've confirmed the loyalists who participated in the extraction attempt. None of them possess resources sufficient to help him disappear this completely.""A fourth faction," Elena said slowly, old dread creeping into her voice. "Someone we haven't identified yet.""Or someone we dismissed as irrelevant, nineteen years ago," Seraphine said. "There were other bloodline factions scattered during

  • THE ASHWOOD LEGACY    AFTERMATH

The council session resumed, eventually, in a heavily secured location, the assembled dignitaries shaken but largely unharmed thanks to the swift response of combined Cross, Ashgrove, and Ashwood security forces working in real, unprecedented cooperation. "This changes things," Vivienne said, joining Elena and Damian in a private debrief following the session's conclusion, her decades of political instinct fully engaged despite her own visible shock at the day's violence. "An attack this brazen, during a formal council session, demands a coordinated response beyond just increased security for Aurelia." "Agreed," Damian said. "Seraphine's faction needs to formally address the fracture Marcus's actions represent. If there are more loyalists sympathetic to his methods, we need to know before they attempt something similarly dangerous." "I'll handle that personally," Seraphine said, having joined the debrief despite the obvious exhaustion evident in her posture. "Marcus's betrayal cut

  • THE ASHWOOD LEGACY    FULL POWER

Aurelia moved into the chaos with her mother at her side, silver-white power crackling visibly around her clenched hands, and felt, for the first time in her entire life, the strange, exhilarating sensation of her power responding exactly as she directed it, rather than surging unpredictably beyond her control. She reached Rowan just as one of Marcus's loyalists raised a weapon toward his exposed back, and released a controlled pulse of power that sent the attacker flying backward without lasting harm — precise, deliberate, nothing like the desperate, uncontrolled bursts of her childhood. "You came," Rowan said, breathless, blood trickling from a shallow cut above his eyebrow. "Obviously. You're mine to protect too, you know. That's how bonds work." Aurelia positioned herself at his side, back to back, facing the remaining loyalists with fierce, unshakable resolve. "Where's Marcus?" "Gone. He retreated the moment your mother's forces started overwhelming his extraction team." Row

  • THE ASHWOOD LEGACY    ROWAN'S CHOICE

Marcus Vane emerged from the chaos personally, having clearly anticipated exactly this level of resistance, his expression carrying the same cold, ruthless calculation Rowan had watched build for weeks without fully understanding its final shape. "Rowan." Marcus's voice carried sincere, unsettling calm despite the violence erupting around them. "I'd hoped you would understand, eventually, that this faction's survival matters more than a bond you didn't choose. I see now that hope was misplaced." "You're attacking innocent people, Marcus. Explosives in a crowded political summit. This isn't strategy. This is just the kind of ruthless extremism Seraphine spent two decades trying to move this faction away from." "Seraphine's caution has made us weak. I am making us strong again." Marcus's gaze flicked past Rowan, toward Aurelia standing protected behind Elena's defensive position. "Step aside, Rowan. This doesn't have to end in violence between us. Help me secure her, and I promise y
