Elara

The white silk of my mating dress clung to my skin like a shroud.

I stood on the raised platform in the center of Silvermoon's ceremonial grounds, my bare feet freezing against the stone, while three thousand pack members watched in silence. The full moon hung low and swollen above us, casting silver light across the gathered wolves. Every eye was fixed on me the wolfless Omega who had somehow, impossibly, been chosen as the Alpha's fated mate.

I had spent three years praying for this moment.

Three years of enduring whispered insults in the pack hallways. Three years of being shoved aside at the water well, of being given the smallest portions at communal meals, of being told I was lucky the Alpha even allowed a defect like me to remain in the territory.

But none of that mattered anymore.

Because Kael Draven, the most powerful Alpha in the Northern Territories, had looked at me across a crowded room six months ago and frozen. I'd felt the bond snap into place like lightning striking my chest. His eyes had widened. His wolf had howled inside him.

And then he had walked away without a word.

I'd spent the next six months in agony, the mate bond pulling at my chest like a fishhook. Every night I'd lain awake, wondering if I'd imagined it. Wondering if perhaps I was so broken that even fate had made a mistake.

But then the invitation had come.

The mating ceremony would take place on the next full moon. I was to wear white. I was to stand before the pack and be claimed.

I had never been so terrified or so hopeful in my entire life.

Now I stood on the platform, and Kael walked toward me with measured steps. He looked like a god carved from marble tall, broad shouldered, with that sharp jaw and those piercing silver eyes that had haunted my dreams. His black ceremonial robes billowed behind him, embroidered with the silver wolf sigil of his house.

His expression was unreadable.

"Elara Voss," he said, his voice carrying across the silent crowd. "You stand before your pack. You stand before the Moon Goddess. Do you accept me as your fated mate?"

My heart pounded so hard I could barely breathe. "I... I accept, Alpha Kael."

A ripple of murmurs ran through the crowd. Some were kind. Most were not.

Kael stepped closer, close enough that I could smell the pine and smoke scent of him. His eyes met mine, and for just a moment, I saw something flicker there—something that looked almost like pain.

Then it was gone.

"Three years ago," he continued, his voice cold as winter steel, "I was told I would find my mate among the wolves of this pack. I was told she would be strong. Worthy. Capable of bearing the next Alpha of Silvermoon."

My stomach dropped. "Kael?"

"I was told," he pressed on, "that the Moon Goddess would never be so cruel as to give me an Omega. A wolf with no wolf. A woman who cannot shift. A mate who is less than nothing."

The crowd was completely silent now. I could feel their eyes on me like brands.

"Kael, please—"

"You are not my mate, Elara Voss." His voice rose, sharp and cutting. "You are a mistake. A defect that fate somehow overlooked."

"No." The word came out as a whisper. "No, you felt it too. I know you did. The bond—"

"The bond was a mistake." His eyes blazed silver. "One I am correcting now. I reject you, Elara Voss. I reject you as my fated mate. I reject you as my Luna. I reject you as a member of this pack. You are nothing to me. You have always been nothing."

The bond shattered.

It wasn't a clean break it was a tearing, a rending, as if something vital was being ripped out of my chest. I screamed. I couldn't help it. The pain was so immense, so all-consuming, that my body gave out beneath me.

I collapsed to my knees on the cold stone. Blood dripped from my nose onto the white silk of my dress. My vision swam with black spots.

Through the haze, I heard Kael's voice one last time.

"Get her out of my sight."

Hands grabbed me. Rough hands. Unkind hands. I was dragged off the platform like refuse, tossed onto the hard ground at the edge of the ceremonial grounds. The pack members stepped back as if I was diseased, forming a circle around me.

I lay there, broken and bleeding, while the mating ceremony continued without me.

Kael turned to the crowd, his silver eyes scanning the assembled wolves. "I have found another," he announced. "One who is worthy of an Alpha's mark. Seraphina Blackwood, daughter of Beta Councilman Marcus Blackwood. Step forward."

A woman emerged from the front row beautiful, elegant, with raven hair and golden eyes. Seraphina was everything I was not. Pure blooded, powerful, with a wolf that could level mountains.

She walked up the steps to the platform and took Kael's hand. He looked at her with such tenderness that something inside me finally, truly broke.

"I accept you, Seraphina Blackwood," he said. "I accept you as my fated mate. I accept you as my Luna. I accept you as the mother of my children."

The crowd roared with approval.

And I lay in the dirt, bleeding, utterly forgotten.

Three years of hoping, I thought as the darkness crept in at the edges of my vision. Three years of praying to be accepted. And this is what I get.

I should have known. I should have known that no one would ever want a defect like me.

No wolf. No pack. No mate. No future.

I am nothing.

I am less than nothing.

I am

ElaraThree days after Kaelen's vision, the champion walked through our gates. She came alone, unarmed, her hands open at her sides. A young woman barely more than a girl with hair the color of burnished copper and eyes that shifted between green and gold. She wore the simple leathers of a traveler, worn and dusty from a long journey. Around her neck hung a pendant I had seen only in ancient texts the sigil of the old Council. The pack bonds hummed with warning as she approached. Every wolf in the courtyard felt it the ancient power that radiated from her, the weight of centuries pressing against the air.I stood on the steps of the great hall with Riven at my side, our son behind us. Naia stood nearby, Lyanna in her arms. Soren and Lyra flanked us, their silver fire blazing. The girl stopped at the foot of the steps and knelt. Not in submission. In acknowledgment."I am Arya," she said, her voice clear and steady. "Last daughter of the old Council. I have come to speak with the King

ElaraThe first sign that something had changed came on the morning of Kaelen's eleventh birthday.I woke to the smell of smoke—not the acrid bite of burning wood, but something warmer, sweeter. Like the first breath of a fire being born. I sat up in bed, my hand reaching for Riven, and found the sheets beside me empty. The bond was humming with something I had never felt before. Not danger. Not fear. Something deeper.Riven?Come quickly. It's Kaelen.I was out of bed before the thought finished, my silver fire blazing to life. I crossed the corridor in three strides, my bare feet slapping against the cold stone. The scent of smoke grew stronger, mingled with something else—something ancient and powerful.I found them in the nursery.Kaelen was sitting cross-legged on his bed, his small hands resting on his knees. His eyes were closed, his face peaceful, but the air around him shimmered with heat. Silver fire—not the gentle pulse that had always lived under his skin, but something br

Elara The first year of our new kingdom passed like a dream. Spring melted into summer, the green fields blooming with wildflowers and the forests alive with the songs of birds. The fortress that had once been a place of blood and fear had transformed into something else entirely a home. The walls were still high, the gates still strong, but the shadows that had once haunted the corridors were gone. In their place was light. In their place was hope. I stood on the balcony of our chambers, my son cradled in my arms, and watched the wolves below. They moved through the courtyard with purpose and joy, their silver fire blazing softly under their skin. They were no longer just survivors, just rogues, just refugees. They were a kingdom. A family. A future. Kaelen stirred in my arms, his amber eyes blinking open. He was beautiful perfect in every way. His dark hair was soft as silk, his skin warm against mine. The silver fire that lived in his blood pulsed gently, in rhythm with my

ElaraThe sun rose over a world that had been reborn.I stood on the highest wall of the fortress, my hand resting on the curve of my son, and watched the light spill across the land. The frost was gone—not retreated, not hiding, but truly gone. The fields beyond the walls were green with new growth, the trees budding with leaves, the air warm and soft and filled with the scent of blooming things.Spring had come. Not the spring of the natural world—though that was part of it—but the spring of something deeper. The old laws were broken. The forced bonds were shattered. The ancient chains that had bound our kind for centuries were gone. And in their place, something new was growing.I could feel it through the pack bonds—the silver fire that now lived in every wolf, the connection that tied us all together. But it was different now. Lighter. Freer. The bonds were not chains anymore. They were threads. Threads that could be woven, rewoven, chosen. The children had done this.My son and

ElaraThe blood moon rose on the fifth night.I felt it before I saw it a pull in my blood, a hum in my bones, a pulse of ancient power that resonated through every fiber of my being. The silver fire under my skin blazed brighter than ever before, responding to the call of something older than the moon itself.I rose from the bed, my hand pressed to my belly. The child inside me was restless, kicking and turning, as if he could feel the change in the air. Across the fortress, I felt Naia stir, felt her daughter respond to the same call.Riven was already awake, his silver fire blazing, his eyes fixed on the window."It's time," he said.I crossed to him, my hand finding his. Together, we looked out at the sky.The moon was rising, full and round and terrible. But it was not silver. It was not white. It was the color of blood—deep and dark and ancient, a crimson eye staring down at the world below. The blood moon had come.---RivenThe fortress woke to the sound of howling. Not in fea

  • REJECTED LUNA, CLAIMED BY THE ROGUE KING    Chapter 47: The Calm Before the Storm

ElaraThe fortress woke to silence on the sixth day.Not the heavy, waiting silence of the frost line creeping closer. Not the tense, watchful silence of wolves preparing for battle. This was something different—a gentle quiet, like the world itself was holding its breath before something momentous.I lay in Riven's arms, my body still humming with the aftermath of the resonance. The silver fire under my skin pulsed softly, in rhythm with our son's heartbeat. I could feel Naia through the binding, her presence calm and steady. The two unborn hybrids were quiet, their power settled into a gentle hum."They know," Riven murmured against my hair. "They know what's coming."I turned in his arms, looking up at him. His scarred face was soft in the morning light, the hard edges of his features blurred by sleep. But his eyes were sharp, watchful."The blood moon," I said."The blood moon. The old laws. Everything we've been preparing for." He paused, his hand finding my belly. "And whatever
