Vivian

The shower was still running.

I wasn’t under it. I was sitting on the cold bathroom floor with my back against the wall, knees to my chest, listening to it. The sound filled the whole room. It filled my head.

If I kept the water on, maybe I wouldn’t have to think. Maybe I wouldn’t have to remember Alexander’s hands on my waist last night. Maybe I wouldn’t have to remember how he told me to leave at 5am like I was nothing.

I jumped when I heard the knock. Soft, but it still cut through

The call from Detective Harris came just after sunrise. I was still at the hospital, sitting beside Beatrice’s bed, when my phone rang. Alexander’s name appeared first in a separate message: *They have her. Come to the station. You need to hear this.*I arrived with two officers. Alexander was already in the meeting room. The distance between us remained, but the urgency in the air made it feel smaller. Detective Harris stood at the head of the table with a thick file and a laptop.“We have identified the woman,” he said without delay. “The voice analysis, the final money trail, and a recovered encrypted phone all point to the same person. Ella Monroe—Alexander Kane’s former fiancée.”The name landed hard. I looked at Alexander. His face was pale and set, but he did not look surprised. Only grim.Harris continued. “She used David Blackstone’s old accounts and forged links to Mrs. Beatrice’s care providers to hide her own involvement. She hired the drivers, the poisoner, and the peop

The first thing Alessandro felt was pain.It settled deep in his bones, heavy and relentless, making every breath feel like a struggle. His head throbbed, and a dull ache spread from the side of his neck where the needle had pierced his skin.He tried to move.A sharp groan escaped his lips instead."Don't."The voice was barely above a whisper.Soft.Gentle.His eyelids fluttered open.At first, everything was blurred. The ceiling above him was cracked, and a single beam of sunlight slipped through a broken window, scattering dust across the room. Then his vision slowly cleared.Sofia was sitting beside him.Her hair had fallen loose around her shoulders, and the sleeve of her blouse was torn. A bruise darkened one side of her face, and dried blood stained the edge of her cuff.Yet despite the exhaustion etched across her features, the moment she saw his eyes open, relief washed over her face."You scared me."Her voice trembled.Alessandro tried to sit up.The room spun violently.H

The recorded fragment left no room for delay. Detective Harris arranged for Beatrice to be brought in for questioning the following afternoon. Alexander insisted on being present. I insisted on coming with him. The silence between us in the car was thick and cold. We had barely spoken since the new evidence arrived. Every word from the day before still hung between us like a wall. The police station felt smaller than before. Detective Harris met us and led us to an observation room. Through the glass I saw my aunt sitting at a plain table. Beatrice looked older than the last time I had seen her. Her hands rested tightly in her lap. When she lifted her head and saw the mirror, her eyes searched for me even though she could not see through it.“She looks frightened,” I said quietly.Alexander stood beside me, his face unreadable. “They will be careful with her. But they have to ask the questions.”Two detectives entered the room and sat across from Beatrice. The conversation began slo

Alexander’s words hung in the air like a blade.“Beatrice’s name just appeared. Directly. In the new records they uncovered.”I stared at him. For a moment I could not speak. The safe room felt smaller. The walls seemed to press inward. My aunt—the woman who had raised me, protected me, and loved me when no one else remained—was now written into the same investigation that had already brought poison, knives, and threats into our lives.“Show me,” I said. My voice sounded strange to my own ears.Alexander turned the laptop toward me. I forced myself to look. The new document listed several transfers. Most still moved through shell accounts, but one recent chain ended with a clear reference to an account linked to Beatrice’s name. The amounts were not small. The dates sat close to the attack at the grocery store and the death of the witness.I shook my head. “This cannot be right. Someone is using her. They have to be.”Alexander’s face remained serious. “That is possible. The investiga

The threatening voice still echoed in my head the next morning. *Stop looking… or she dies next.*Alexander had not slept much. Neither had I. We sat in the safe room with cold coffee while Thomas brought the latest reports. One of the private investigators had sent a new file overnight. Alexander opened it on his laptop and read in silence for a long time. His expression grew darker with every page. Finally he turned the screen toward me.“There are money transfers,” he said quietly. “Small ones at first, then larger. They move through several accounts and end near people connected to your aunt’s medical care and her private nurses. The timing lines up with the start of the attacks.”I stared at the screen. The words and numbers blurred. “My aunt? Beatrice?”“The records do not show her name directly,” Alexander said. “But the path of the money passes close to her circle. The investigator flagged it as a possible link. We have to consider it.”The room felt suddenly too small. I st

Marta’s words stayed in the room long after she finished speaking.“I caught a scent. Cologne. The same one Mr. Blackstone used to wear when he used to visit months ago. I am sure of it.”Alexander asked her to sit down. His voice remained calm, but I saw the way his hands rested too still on the arms of his wheelchair. I sat beside him while Marta repeated everything she remembered.“Tell us again,” Alexander said. “From the beginning. Do not leave out any detail.”Marta nodded. “After the emergency lights came on, I was helping check the linen closet near the east hallway. When I passed the area outside your door, I smelled it clearly. It was not strong, but I knew it at once. Mr. Blackstone used that same cologne every time he came here. I used to notice it on his jackets when I hung them.”“Could it have been something else?” I asked. “Another type of cologne? One of the guards?”She shook her head. “No, Miss Vivian. I have a good memory for scents. That one is distinct. I am cert
