Shadows of the Alley

The blinding high beams transformed the underground utility expanse into a flashing arena of white light. Engine thunder roared off the low concrete ceilings, vibrating through the soles of Ethan’s shoes. Sixty miles per hour.

Ethan didn't try to outrun the machine. His eyes locked onto the black hood, calculating the trajectory with cold, split-second precision.

Right as the steel front bumper was about to crush his ribs, Ethan threw his body sideways.

He launched himself over the hood of a parked utility van, twisting in mid-air. The black sedan missed his feet by inches, its side mirror snapping off against the van’s steel frame with a deafening crack.

Ethan crashed hard onto a stack of abandoned wooden freight crates at the edge of the alleyway service ramp. Wood splintered violently under his weight. Dust, rotten timber, and rusted nails tore through his suit jacket as he tumbled across the damp concrete floor, rolling three times to absorb the impact before slamming shoulder-first into a brick support column.

Gasping for air, Ethan pushed himself up onto one knee. His left shoulder burned with white-hot agony, and fresh blood scraped from his forearm soaked into his white dress shirt.

Fifty feet down the ramp, the black sedan screeched to a halt, its tires smoking as the driver slammed on the brakes. The vehicle pivoted sharply, blocking the alleyway exit entirely.

All four doors of the sedan swung open simultaneously.

Three tall, broad-shouldered men stepped out into the murky shadow of the service alley. They wore dark tactical jackets, leather gloves, and heavy combat boots. The driver held a long, rusted iron water pipe in his left hand, while the two men flanking him pulled heavy suppressed pistols from their waistbands.

"Target’s alive," the lead attacker barked into a collar mic, his voice raspy and devoid of emotion. "Initiating cleanup."

Ethan dragged himself to his feet, leaning his back against the cold brick column. Rain from the street above trickled through the overhead ventilation grates, dripping onto his bruised forehead.

"Julian’s getting cheap," Ethan spat, wiping a smear of blood and engine grime from his cheek. "Sending three mercenaries to do a job he didn't have the guts to do himself."

The lead mercenary stepped forward, tapping the iron pipe against his palm with a dull, rhythmic beat.

"Julian Sterling didn't hire us to talk, kid," the lead gunman sneered, racking the slide of his suppressed pistol with a crisp clack. "Orders are simple. Break your legs, put two rounds in your chest, and dump you in the river. No body, no trial, no Vance inheritance."

"You think you're the first execution squad I've faced?" Ethan asked, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying register.

His eyes swept the alley in a fraction of a second. A shattered wooden pallet to his left. An open industrial breaker box behind him. A heavy two-foot steel scaffolding pipe lying half-buried under a pile of gravel four feet away.

"You're in my domain now," Ethan whispered.

"Shoot him," the lead man commanded.

Two suppressed rounds spat fire into the dark. The bullets cracked into the brick column right where Ethan’s head had been a microsecond before.

Ethan had already dropped flat. He lunged across the wet gravel, his bleeding fingers locking around the cold steel scaffolding pipe.

He didn't hesitate. Swinging the heavy steel bar in a brutal upward arc, Ethan slammed the metal directly into the knee of the first gunman advancing on his right.

The mercenary screamed as his kneecap shattered, his leg bending backward at an impossible angle. He dropped his weapon, falling face-first into the wet concrete.

Before the second gunman could adjust his aim, Ethan exploded off the ground. He grabbed the falling mercenary’s tactical vest, spinning the grown man around to use him as a human shield.

The second attacker fired twice, his suppressed rounds slamming directly into his own partner’s body armor.

Ethan kicked the dying shield forward, shoving the dead weight straight into the second shooter. The impact knocked the gunman off balance, sending his pistol clattering across the wet gravel.

Ethan closed the distance in a heartbeat. He slammed the flat of his palm upward into the second shooter’s jawbone.

The man’s head snapped back violently, his eyes rolling into his head as his body went limp, crashing unconscious onto the hood of the black sedan.

Two down. Four seconds.

Ethan turned slowly, his chest heaving, his hands slick with rain and blood as he gripped the heavy steel pipe.

The lead mercenary, the driver, stood ten feet away. His cocky smirk was completely gone. His face had turned ashen white as he stared at his two fallen men. He raised his suppressed pistol with both hands, his fingers trembling on the trigger.

"Don't move, you bastard!" the driver yelled, his voice shaking with sudden panic. "I'll put a bullet right between your…."

Ethan didn't wait for him to finish.

He ripped an iron breaker box door off the wall behind him and flung it like a spinning steel disc directly at the driver’s face.

The heavy metal square slammed square into the driver’s nose, shattering bone and showering his vision with red. The driver fired wildly into the air as he stumbled backward.

The round ricocheted uselessly off the concrete ceiling.

Ethan stepped into the driver’s blind spot, ducking beneath the trailing arm, and jammed his elbow directly into the man’s throat.

The driver choked, gasping for air as his pistol slipped from his fingers. Ethan caught the falling firearm in mid-air, reversed his grip, and slammed the heavy steel butt of the gun down onto the driver’s collarbone.

The driver collapsed against the side of the sedan, screaming in agony as his shoulder gave way.

Ethan kicked the driver’s feet out from under him, slamming the heavy man face-first against the side window of the car. The glass cracked into a spiderweb pattern under the impact.

Ethan grabbed the mercenary by his thick collar, hauling him up until his boots barely touched the ground. He slammed his forearm across the man's windpipe, pinning him against the crushed sedan.

The alley went deadly quiet, save for the rhythmic dripping of rainwater and the mercenary’s frantic, desperate gasps for oxygen.

Ethan’s face was inches from the killer’s. Blood trickled down Ethan’s temple, staining his collar, but his dark eyes held a cold, predatory light that made the mercenary tremble in absolute terror.

"Listen to me very carefully," Ethan growled, his voice a razor-blade whisper that vibrated against the man's throat. "Julian Sterling didn't know I was taking the service stairwell. Nobody knew except the person who gave me the keycard."

The driver clawed at Ethan’s forearm, his eyes bulging as he tried to find air. "I... I don't know what you're talking about"

Ethan tightened his grip, pressing his forearm harder into the man's neck until his face turned purple. He raised the suppressed pistol, jamming the cold steel barrel directly into the mercenary's right kneecap.

"Give me a name," Ethan ordered, his voice devoid of humanity. "Give me the name of the person who called your squad and gave you my exact exit route from Mercer Holdings. Three... two..."

"WAIT! WAIT!" the driver choked out, tears of pain bursting from his eyes as the steel barrel bit into his shattered bone. "It was an encrypted text! A direct ping from inside the executive suite!"

"Who sent it?!" Ethan barked, pressing the gun harder.

The driver gagged, coughing up blood onto Ethan’s sleeve as he gasped out his final breath of terror.

"Mercer!" the mercenary choked out. "The tip came from Chloe Mercer!"

It's an alliance of survival," Chloe replied smoothly.
