Chapter 3

Author: Vast Ocean
I closed my eyes, hardened my resolve, and decided to gamble my life on one last desperate swim toward the border.

Suddenly, commotion erupted from a rescue boat in the distance before a voice boomed. "Hurricane landfall imminent! Rescue team's final patrol! If you're in distress, signal with your lights!"

With the last of my strength, I hauled myself onto the deck and slammed on the light switch. The rescue team spotted me and began turning their boat in my direction.

Just as it drew near, the cargo ship's lights went out with a sharp click. It wasn't just the lights, but all electrical systems on board had shut down.

The radio lay on the deck. Melanie's voice was colder than the sea as it came through. "Pathetic. I told you that swimming over is your only option."

Refusing to give up, I mustered every ounce of strength and roared, "I'm here! There's someone in the water who needs rescue!"

But the sea was too dark, and I could hear confused voices coming from the rescue team. "Why did the lights suddenly go out? Did we imagine it?

"Anyway, the hurricane's coming. Let's move!"

As the rescue boat drifted farther away, the sea was once again swallowed by darkness.

The hurricane lashed at my face, and the cargo ship was violently tossed in the waves. It creaked and groaned, already showing signs of breaking apart.

This was just a Category Two hurricane. By the time it reached Category Five, I wouldn't stand even the slimmest chance of survival.

Weakly, I picked up the radio, and my voice was hoarse with pain. "Melanie! We've been married for five full years…

"Can't you just let me go, even if it's just for old times' sake? I'll actually die here!"

What came through was Darell's sharp laughter. "What marriage are you even talking about? Did you seriously think that the five-dollar marriage certificate was real?

"Let me tell you the truth—just the night before you two signed the papers, Melanie and I were playing Truth or Dare. My dare was for her to buy a cheap fake marriage certificate and trick you with it."

His words seemed to explode in my ears, and I felt like I had just been struck by lightning.

It hit me that that was why she hadn't shown up on our wedding registration day. Instead, she had sent a lawyer to handle the paperwork.

The lawyer's expression had been strange, and she had repeatedly suggested that I post the marriage certificate online. I thought she just wanted people to congratulate us, but it turned out that she had been warning me that the marriage certificate was fake.

Five years… Melanie had lied to me for five whole years.

The radio crackled as the water seeped in. Melanie's voice came through in broken fragments, but each word carved deep into my heart, leaving dense wounds.

"It's been five years, and I've long gotten sick of you, Clifton. You're shallow, and money is all you can see. You don't have a romantic bone in your body compared to Darell.

"I'm so done with you."

I curved my lips into a self-mocking smile. "Fine. Since you've had enough of me, let's just die together today. No one gets to live!"

Staring at the sea that could swallow everything, I smiled, gripped the knife, and charged recklessly toward the aft.

Melanie was betting on my sense of duty and that I would never sink the ransom. Once I drowned, the rescue boat she had arranged would arrive to take the ransom I had escorted to the border. Every bit of credit would go to Darell.

Well, I refused to let them have it.

I pressed the knife against the ropes. Below it were ten full crates of gold bars.

When I began slicing through the ropes, panic finally broke out in the control room. "Clifton, stop!"

"You're about to die! Are you trying to get us killed, too?"

"Hugh will hunt us to the ends of the earth! Drop the knife, now!"

Only Melanie continued flirting with Darell and indifferently said, "He loves me too much to put me in danger."

"Exactly! You're all just overreacting. His family's lives are still in Mr. Zimmerman's hands…"

They continued mocking me until they saw the rope snap on the monitor and the ransom began to sink into the sea. That was when they immediately panicked and screamed, "Calm down, Clifton! I'll send the rescue team over now!"

"Drop the knife!"

I looked straight into the camera and gave a cold laugh. "Too late!"

With the last of my strength, I severed the final rope.

As the ten crates of gold bars sank into the sea, I closed my eyes and leaped after them.

As Hugh tightened his fingers on the trigger, a chill ran down my spine, but I steeled myself and said, "Only I know where Ella is right now. Are you sure you want to kill me?"Once I'm dead, she'll truly slip out of your control. And besides, you don't have the guts to pull the trigger in broad daylight, do you?"Hugh sneered and cocked the gun. "Stop trying to push me. I'm the law in Starbury, while you're just a hired hand. No one cares if you die, and I have the money to deal with anything."Just as the words left his mouth, sirens blared along the coastline. Ella arrived with the police and confronted Hugh head-on. "Oh? Does that include dealing with your biological daughter, too?"When Hugh turned around and saw the whole fleet of police officers and snipers, he finally panicked and slipped back to the devoted-father persona he had set up for the cameras."E-Ella! You're alive!"Come here so I can take a good look at you! You must've suffered so much!"Unfortunately, eve

Melanie immediately panicked. With tears and snot running down her face, she clung to me and refused to let go."I'm sorry, honey. Don't send me back because I'll go crazy in there. Darell's dead, and I don't want to die, too! "I swear I'll never look at another man again. Just let me stay, and please don't send me back to the psychiatric hospital!"After sending Ella away, I turned around to deal with Melanie. It was obvious that she was traumatized by whatever she had endured in the psychiatric hospital and kept muttering under her breath, "Don't hit me! Let me go! I'm sorry!"Hugh hadn't shown an ounce of mercy. He had orchestrated the entire drama himself, yet he acted as if he was truly avenging his daughter. Human life meant nothing to him at all.Seeing what he had done to Melanie made me worried if Ella could actually keep her promise to protect me.When Melanie noticed that I was lost in thought, she cried and pleaded, "Please don't kick me out, Clifton. After everything was dealt with, Hugh looked in my direction and coldly said, "I heard you used to be a lifeguard. Do you still want to guard the sea?"You know too much, but since you were in the recent kidnapper news, I won't touch you for now. Go to the border. Better yet, disappear from my sight, or I can't guarantee what I might be capable of."Hugh had made arrangements for me, so I nodded and accepted everything.Just before leaving, I asked, "What about the kidnappers? Are you just letting them go?"With his back to me, he was silent for a long time before finally saying, "I have my own ways of handling things."I was sent back to the border waters to resume rescue work.Five years ago, I had been a lifeguard, but I sustained severe injuries after saving Melanie. My arms could no longer withstand prolonged seawater exposure, so I had to leave lifeguarding and join the technical team.I knew how cruel the sea could be, which was why I trained the team with harsh disciplin

Melanie grabbed her coat and instinctively bolted for the door."If you're not buying the tickets, forget it. This threat isn't fun at all, so stop trying to give me a fright."I don't even know what you're talking about. It has nothing to do with me at all…"Darell was trembling with so much fear that he couldn't even hear the word "Hugh" without flinching. As the two tried to flee, I clapped my hands before a dozen bodyguards poured in and surrounded them. "As I said, you're not getting out of here. None of us is escaping responsibility for Ella's death, especially you two!"The bodyguards dragged them before Hugh and forced them to their knees."Do you know what you've done?" Hugh asked, polishing a gleaming dagger with clear, unmistakable sharpness. For a man as wealthy as Hugh, money could fix anything. Human lives were just numbers that didn't matter to him at all.Cameras were set up. His revenge on them was likely just another way to reinforce his devoted-father imag

The kidnapper jeered. "I gave your daughter an extra 30 minutes to live, so you should thank me for that."If you want her body intact, bring another 20 million dollars!"Hugh was already on the rescue ship as he tearfully agreed. But the moment he turned away, he ordered the ship to leave the border.Reporters hidden on the rescue ship emerged and showed him the footage they had just captured. "We've decided on the headline. 'Tycoon nearly driven insane with fear while trying to ransom his daughter. Greedy kidnappers demand another 20 million dollars after taking the money…'"Hugh nodded in satisfaction. "Good work. Everyone gets a bonus once this hits the front page. "It looks like I'll make quite the headline this time."I stood behind him and found the entire scene incredibly tragic. All his concern and devoted father act was just a performance for the headlines. When I turned and looked back toward the compound, I saw Ella standing up from the pool of blood.I rubbed my

I swam down to the crates filled with gold bars and opened them one by one. Someone as calculating as Hugh would have anticipated every possible outcome. I refused to believe that he would willingly hand over ten full crates of gold.Sure enough, I found oxygen supply in the ninth crate. It hit me that he had wanted to temporarily placate the kidnappers with the gold bars. Once Ella was rescued, he would have his men retrieve the gold bars from the sea. With the oxygen gear, I could hold on a little longer.Sure enough, voices from the rescue team soon broke across the surface of the sea. "Clifton! The rescue team is here! We know you're still alive!"Bring the ransom up now!"When I surfaced, the rescue team risked the hurricane to haul me onboard.Hugh was also on the rescue ship. When he noticed that I was wearing the oxygen gear, his expression immediately darkened."Where's the ransom? If a single bar's missing, I'll throw you back into the sea myself!"I removed the oxy
