I knew that I was letting my guard down—which probably wasn’t a good idea, given that I’d been forced to come here. But it was so hard to keep my hackles up. The women were all so kind.

They saw the marks Lucas had left on me and thought surely I must’ve been an abused slave who suffered at the hands of a vampire. Miriam did her best to make me feel safe and comfortable in the cave.

She had taken to braiding my hair while we fell into a deep discussion about dragons. I couldn’t help but fall into the gentle tug of her fingers. It reminded me of my own mother.
