06 TRAGEDY

BINTA

Aisha got up and headed out in a hurry.

"Where are you off to?" Nana called after her.

"I have to go and bring my father. He can help me with this. He is the only one that can help." She answered, heading out.

We were all scared and confused. What seemed like a story suddenly became real to us. This had happened right in front of us. The cause of my father's death was mere speculation that was proved genuine in seconds. We had all seen the deity in action; we had heard her voice. This was serious. I became scared.

I saw Mairo packing her bags. She wanted to run away, and I didn't blame her. This was not her problem. She was an in-law here. If she stayed any longer, she ran the risk of exposing herself and her family to the wrath of the deity. I wouldn't ask her to risk that neither would my mother.

"Promise you'll visit me when you can." I heard her say to my mother. My mother smiled and hugged her. She and I understood Mario's fear, and we were not going to judge her for leaving. She hugged me and took her to leave.

Mimi did the same, but Gogo stayed behind to care for my mother as she was still mourning. Gogo was unmarried and had no children; therefore, she had nothing to lose. I was the closest she had as her child; it made me realise how important we were to her.

Suddenly I had an idea, and I went over to discuss it with my mother.

"Mama, don't you think it's only wise we ask Mai'Aljanu to come and fix this since he was part of it in the beginning?" to my surprise Nana and Kawu heard me, which meant they had been eavesdropping on our conversation. How insecure could anyone get? I thought to myself.

"What do you know, little girl?" Nana cautioned me. "Do you think you are wiser than your elders?" I noticed the anger in her tone. I was furious. She was the reason why we were in this mess. I wanted to snap back, but I dared not, so I remained silent. Kawu placed his hands on Nana's shoulders in an attempt to calm her.

"You need to relax, Nana. That's your granddaughter. With the way things are, she is all you have. Don't make her hate you. She meant well, and I believe she's right. Mai'Aljanu is the only one that can give us a reliable explanation and even a solution to this predicament we are in." Kawu said calmly.
