Max’s cold voice cut through the air. "David Morrison, if you don’t accept the result, you can go to Stardust and protest there. Stop embarrassing yourself by spreading how foolish you are in front of others."
David was shocked. He turned to Max, who was already standing beside him. An awkward smile crossed his lips as he stood and patted Max on the shoulder.
"Oh, Max, when did you get so... so... tall?" David playfully asked, trying to sound casual and ignoring Max’s sulking.
Aurora stifled a laugh at David’s silly comment but remained quiet.
"What do you mean, David? I’ve always been this tall. I’m a few inches taller than you..." Max said coldly, shooting him a get-lost expression.
David chuckled as he scratched his head, realizing Max had ignored his joke. "Right, right! Sorry, I didn’t notice you had grown this tall!" He cleared his throat before continuing hurriedly. "Hey, do you want to join us for lunch?"
Max sighed heavily, feeling drained from the conversation with this foolish David.
Ignoring Max’s annoyance, David continued to tease Max, "To be honest, we’re finished. You can join us for lunch next time. Right, Aurora? Let’s go..."
David grinned at Aurora, picked up his cell phone from the table, and gestured for her to follow him.
Walking beside David, Aurora leans closer and whispers, "Why bother to talk to him like that, David?"
"Well, I’m just trying to be nice. You know, to protect us from him." David smiled, walked faster, and left the cafeteria. Aurora remained silent but followed him as they walked toward the door.
Max stood in disbelief as he watched them walk away, completely ignoring him while he was still speaking.
Grinding his teeth in frustration, he called out, "Wait, Aurora Spencer! I need to talk to you!" as he hurried toward them.
"Just ignore him..." David whispered. He pulled Aurora out of the building.
Aurora halted her steps and released David’s hand. "David, you go ahead; I need to hear what he has to say—"
"No way. Are you falling for his charm again?" David was surprised to hear Aurora’s still curious voice, wanting to hear Max’s words.
"Wait for me outside," Aurora said firmly as she turned to Max. "What do you want to talk about?" she asked.
Max didn’t rush to respond; instead, he stared at David, standing behind Aurora like a bodyguard. After giving David an intense glare, he turned back to Aurora. "We need to talk alone!"
Aurora glanced at David, who shot a glare back at Max. She couldn’t help but laugh inwardly as she watched the two men seemingly compete with their eyes.
"It’s fine. You can talk here. David can listen if he wants," Aurora said casually, noting the broad smile on David’s face. He was pleased that she had allowed him to stay.
"Go ahead, Max! You don’t need to be afraid of me. I won’t harm you, man," David said, crossing his arms over his chest and narrowing his eyes at Max. "As long as you haven’t harmed Aurora, I won’t beat you."
Aurora stifled a laugh.
Max glared at David, disbelief written all over his face. He couldn’t believe that this shameless man dared to threaten him. ’Does he even know how to fight?’ he thought.
Ignoring David, Max turned his attention to Aurora. "Are you sure about this? It’s personal..."
’Personal?’ Aurora raised an eyebrow, curiosity appearing briefly before she dismissed it. She didn’t have time to waste listening to Max’s nonsense.
Her calm expression shifted to one of sharp determination as she urged him to continue, "It’s fine. Hurry up and speak... I need to go somewhere."
"Aurora, I need you to stop pursuing me." Max’s profound, commanding words almost made Aurora laugh, but she maintained her composure, holding her laughter inwardly.
When Max noticed her lack of reaction, even after deliberately pausing to give her a chance to respond, he heard no words from her lips. There was no flicker of anger or sadness in her eyes, which she typically displayed in similar situations.
"I know this hurts and may make you sad, but you must accept it, Aurora. I’ve often told you I don’t have feelings for you because someone else has my heart. You need to stop now. Stop hoping that one day I will fall for you. I won’t!"
Aurora can’t believe Max has the audacity to say those words.
’What the heck! Geez, this little Max rejected me?’ Aurora felt a laugh bubbling up inside her. It was amusing to hear a man reject her for the first time, especially since she had always been the one to reject men in her past life.
But again, before she reminded him she never fell for him, she remembered her new identity as Aurora Spencer. She could only vent her frustration while maintaining her calm expression.
David was shocked to hear Max’s harsh words directed at Aurora. He felt conflicted about how to respond. On the one hand, he was overjoyed that Aurora would stop liking Max. Still, on the other hand, he felt terrible seeing her rejected like this.
’She must be sad, right? Oh no, she might cry again...’ David wondered as he looked at Aurora. However, his jaw almost dropped to the floor when he saw her calm expression—no anger or sadness was on her face.
He was too worried to notice Aurora standing like a statue, her gaze fixed on Max before he leaned closer to Aurora and whispered.
"Aurora, are you alright? Do you want me to punch Max’s handsome face for you?" He narrowed his eyes at Max. "I don’t mind fighting with him..."
Aurora ignored David, her eyes still locked on Max. Slowly, a calm smile spread across her lips as she stepped forward and halted in front of Max.
They stood so close that Max was left shocked and unable to move.
Seeing her this close, Max felt frozen, and her alluring smile stirred something in his heart. He clenched his hands tightly, trying to maintain a straight-face as he waited for her to say something.
Watching the door close behind her, Aurora sighed softly as she looked around Alex’s vast but nearly empty office. After a few moments, she walked over to the seating area. She settled onto the large and comfy single sofa, waiting for him to arrive. This was the first time she had been in Alex’s office, waiting for him. Usually, she accompanied him everywhere, even into important meeting rooms. The only time she didn’t go with him when she was guarding him was when he visited the bathroom.A faint smile graced her lips as she imagined her precious life; she had devoted herself entirely to him. But now, she returned here not as his assistant but as his wife. She never thought this would happen, yet here she was. After a few more minutes of waiting, Aurora started to feel anxious. She had waited almost thirty minutes, yet the tightly closed door stayed shut."Did he forget about me?" Aurora stifled a laugh, imagining Alex completely overlooking her and rushing off to handle his work.Ho
"Miss Aurora, you can get in the car now..."Aurora was taken aback when she heard Alvin’s voice. "Thanks..." she responded briefly before looking at Alex. She gently bowed her head to Alex and settled beside him.She felt her heart race. Her cold hands, resting on her lap, were tightly clenched.Sitting beside Alex again, Aurora found it difficult to describe her feelings. It felt surreal; she had faced death, yet here she was, even though she did not appear as Aurora Moon. After a few more seconds of waiting, she noticed that Alex seemed to be avoiding her gaze. Unable to bear the silence, she greeted him first."Mr. Graystone... Good morning," her soft, weak voice prompted Alex to glance at her."You don’t need to speak formally to me. Just call me Alex," he replied coldly before turning to Alvin and asking him to drive the car.Aurora sighed quietly as she gazed at Alex’s icy expression. All the words she had prepared vanished from her mind.Seeing Alex continue to ignore her made
Aurora’s unexpected question surprised Renata and Danny. They exchanged glances, seeking to bolster each other’s courage before explaining to the girl why she had decided to close her restaurant: she needed time to mourn her best friend, Aurora Moon. However, after a few moments of silence, Renata looked struggling to respond."Sis Renata, I apologize if my question seems insensitive and offends you. If my question makes you uncomfortable, please forget I ever ask..." Aurora smiled apologetically and as sincerely as possible.Seeing her friends looking so sad made Aurora’s heartache. Two of her best friends must be in shock and mourning over her sudden and painful death.Just thinking about how they would react when they found out about her death made her eyes slowly blur.Aurora tried hard to suppress her emotions, hoping she wouldn’t cry in front of them. Otherwise, they might become confused and suspicious of her again.Renata let out a soft sigh before replying, "No, Aurora, your
’Danny...’Aurora’s lips trembled as she whispered his name. She wanted to run to him and tell him she was still alive. However, she dismissed the idea. All she could do was express her sadness inwardly and attempt to soothe her overwhelming emotions. As Aurora struggled to control her emotions, Danny suddenly stopped and gazed in her direction, causing her to freeze in shock at their eye contact."Who are you?" Danny asked, his expression puzzled. He vividly remembered Renata saying she would close her restaurant for a week to mourn Aurora’s death. But why was there a customer here? And why was she sitting at their favorite table?Aurora pretended to be confused as she looked at Danny. However, her hands, hidden beneath the table, were tightly clenched, and her heart raced. They exchanged a momentary stare until Renata emerged from behind the kitchen door. She was taken aback to see Danny standing near the entrance, blocking her way."Danny! You finally came..." Renata said, smiling
Aurora almost fainted. For a brief moment, she lost herself, overwhelmed by her emotions, upon seeing her best friend again.’I’m sorry, Rena. I apologize if I made you feel sad. I’m truly sorry...’ Aurora expressed her sorrow as she watched Renata hurry to the kitchen, leaving her alone in the seating area. She felt heartache and a tsunami of emotions overwhelmed her like something inside her mind engulfed her eyes’ tear duct, making her want to shed tons of tears. She tightly clenched her hands and tried hard to calm herself.Aurora refused to cry, fearing it would confuse Renata....When Renata finally returned with a glass of water, Aurora quickly averted her gaze from her friend and pretended to check her cell phone—she feared Renata would notice her teary, damped, red eyes."Ehm, Young Lady, please have a drink," Renata said, placing the glass on the table before sitting across from Aurora. When she saw Aurora finish the glass, she smiled and continued, "Even though we are clos
’Did they read the news about my accident?’ Aurora wondered. She recalled two articles that had appeared online about her incident. However, the coverage didn’t attract much attention and was soon buried under celebrity gossip and other business news.Although Aurora didn’t care much about the articles, she was concerned that someone needed to inform her friends if they hadn’t seen the news. Otherwise, they might be confused about her sudden absence from their lives.Aurora sighed softly, feeling the weight of her thoughts as she remembered her best friend.Lost in deep thought about her friends, Aurora was startled when David’s voice echoed, breaking the silence."Aurora, can I ask you something?" he asked, keeping his gaze fixed on the road ahead. She turned to look at him. "Yes, of course..."David glanced briefly at her, trying to read her emotions, but what he saw remained unchanged. She appeared calm and confident, just as when confronting Max in the cafeteria."Are you... serio
