Early the next morning after Emma's special visit, she arrived at the company early. In the office, David was sitting at his desk when there was a knock on the door.
"Come in."
The man entered and handed him a folder; this man was Ren, David's longtime male assistant. They were quite familiar with each other due to their long working relationship.
"Director David, here are the documents you requested."
"Okay, just leave it on the desk."
David remained focused on his computer screen, although everyone knew him as a playboy heir, in reality, he never neglected his work.
Ren placed the documents on the desk but lingered without any intention to leave, catching David's attention. He looked up with a puzzled expression, questioning Ren.
"Is there something?"
Ren hesitated slightly under David's inquiry, his face turning downwards, unable to meet David's eyes.
When Ren didn't provide a response, David impatiently asked again.
"So, what's the matter?"
"The secretary has been chosen, sir."
Ren finally spoke up, and David simply nodded. He wasn't particularly concerned about this issue.
"Is that all? I thought there was something else?"
"Well, actually, the secretary..."
Ren was about to elaborate further when David swiftly interrupted him.
"Alright, just have her come in."
"Yes, sir."
Ren intended to tell David the truth, but he didn't get the chance. The secretary, Emma, reluctantly agreed and left the room.
"Director David wants you to come into his office."
As Ren left, he noticed Emma lying on the table and lightly tapped the desk to remind her before instructing her to enter David's office.
"He's calling for me?"
"That's correct."
Ren regarded her with suspicion; he couldn't understand why she was chosen. Ren had been David's secretary for a long time, but he had never seen a female secretary like Emma being chosen before.
Emma quickly stood up and adjusted her clothing; she had been awake since early morning to get to the company, only to find out she arrived too early. Every employee's gaze towards her was uncomfortable, clearly showing their dislike for her. Emma had no intention of winning David over; she even disliked him herself.
"Come in."
Emma adjusted her glasses and took a deep breath before stepping into David's office. He was lounging casually on the desk, looking relaxed. He had his legs propped up on a chair; David seemed to be here for leisure rather than work.
"Why is it you?"
David's eyes couldn't hide his astonishment; he immediately questioned Emma.
"Why are you here?"
"I'm your new female secretary. My name is Laura."
David was taken aback by this statement; he remembered this girl. He hadn't chosen Laura yesterday because she didn't meet the standards; neither her appearance nor her face was attractive.
Emma's makeup today was the same as yesterday, with a hint of freckles on her face, combined with glasses and hair covering half her face.
"Are you mistaken? We didn't hire you."
David knew very well he hadn't hired Laura; he was annoyed at how she ended up here. Around him were all beautiful girls, and this girl was just too ugly.
"I received the job offer letter. Chairman Jones has accepted me."
Emma faced David's unpleasant remarks without fear. She had been approved by Chairman Jones, who was also David's father.
"Chairman Jones..."
David's expression immediately turned sour, then he picked up the phone and called Ren. David had always chosen his own secretary, so it was unusual for his father to choose one for him.
"Who hired the secretary for me?"
"Um... it was Chairman Jones..."
Ren's voice on the other end sounded somewhat hesitant in response to David's angry tone. David was a playboy; he didn't care much about the company, so he only chose a secretary for fun.
Hearing his father's name only made David more unhappy; he took out his wallet and threw a stack of money onto the table in front of Emma.
"Quit."
David always liked to defy his father; he didn't want to follow his arrangements.
"What's this?"
"Severance pay. It'll help you live better."
Emma's face remained cold as she looked at the check on the table; she seemed to look down on David. David might be more detestable than she thought; he wanted her to quit on her first day of work.
"Really?"
Emma picked up the check on the table and looked at the numbers. It was indeed a large sum; if it were anyone else, they would take the money and leave. But Emma was different; she didn't work here for the money, especially since it was so difficult for her to get this job.
"How much are you mocking me?"
David noticed Emma's intense gaze fixed on the check, so he stood up, took the check, added a few more digits, and handed it to Emma.
"Is this enough? You don't need to be here."
Emma had been coldly smiling inside; she glanced at the check and then back at him.
"I'm sorry, but I don't need it."
David looked at Emma in surprise, then smirked contemptuously and propped his feet back up on the table, looking at Emma.
"You don't need to create any excitement to attract me. How much did Chairman Jones give you? I'll double it."
Emma slowly approached the table opposite David, tossing the check onto the table.
"I made a promise to Chairman Jones, and no matter what, I'll keep it. I know you're very generous, but you should use that money for beautiful girls or those who need it."
After saying her piece, Emma turned and left; she couldn't stay and face David. If she stayed, she might not be able to resist hitting him. She had thought David would see her as normal, but in the end, he treated her like the other girls and threw money in front of her.
As Emma angrily left David's office, she bumped into Ren, who was about to enter. Seeing David's displeased expression and Emma's angry face, he spoke up.
"Is something wrong, Director David?"
"Why did you hire her?"
David's voice was low as he looked at Ren, who reluctantly spoke the truth.
"This was Chairman Jones's idea... He personally called me to hire Laura."
David wanted to fire Emma, but he had no way; behind Emma was his father backing her up. Emma wasn't an easy girl to deal with, and she had no love for money.
"Alright, I'll find a way to make her quit on her own."
An idea popped into David's head; he would use his own methods to make Emma quit without needing to use money. David didn't realize that the girl named Laura was actually Emma in disguise.
Emma sat on a desk outside, took out a stack of papers, and began doodling to relieve her frustration. She had been pampered all her life, but today, coming here to work, she was provoked by David, making her furious. He underestimated her.
From morning till now, Emma hadn't had to do anything. She knew this female secretary position for David was just for show, not for actual work. No one had come to tell her what to do; Ren even handed her a work schedule. Basically, her job was to make coffee and tea for David.
Emma felt utterly powerless with this working style; she saw that David didn't care about the company at all. But in her previous life, David had been very good at organizing and developing this company, making Mark fearful and wary.
Emma was still absentmindedly staring at the papers she had doodled on when a stack of documents was placed in front of her."Director David said you have to complete this work today."Emma glanced at the stack of documents in front of her. It was clear that David was deliberately making things difficult for her, perhaps hoping she would give up the job."Alright."Emma didn't think much of it and agreed. She wasn't afraid of hard work and was determined to make David stop disliking her.Ren, who had dropped the papers on her desk, returned to his own workspace, feeling a bit puzzled as to why David was giving Emma such a hard time. He couldn't help but glance back at Emma, finding something intriguing about her."Do you think you can play hardball with me, David? Well, you're wrong."Emma tried to boost her own spirits; today, she was Laura, not Emma. Her desk faced Ren's.Emma put on her eyeglasses, took off her high heels, and began to work. It had taken some scheming to get into t
Despite her strong dislike, Emma tried to work as best as she could, as she was the only one left at the moment. Emma looked around, and seeing no one, she got up, gathered the pile of papers, and headed home, unaware that someone had been watching her all this time. When Emma reached home, she plopped onto her beloved bed. Since she agreed to interview at David's company, she had moved to a different apartment. Emma feared that her guise would be exposed, upsetting her mother.Just as she was about to get up to take a shower, her phone rang, so she quickly went to find it."Are you back from work?"The voice belonged to Roger. He had been waiting for Emma to reach out, but since she hadn’t, he decided to call her."I just got back."Emma replied without enthusiasm; she was exhausted and didn’t feel like talking to him."Can we meet?"Mark noticed Emma’s change in demeanor, but he was trying to stay in her good graces. If Emma wasn’t happy, it could spell trouble for his company.Emma
The next day, Emma was awakened by the ringing phone. She picked it up, her eyes still lazy and unfocused."Laura, could you make breakfast for Director David today?"Before Emma could reply, the caller abruptly hung up. She was about to go back to sleep when the phone rang again."Emma, about last night... did you get home safely?"This voice made her fully awake. Emma sat up, looked at the phone screen, and began to calm down."I got home on my own.""Last night... I think I drank a bit too much."Emma chuckled to herself; Mark had called her early in the morning, indicating he was quite alarmed. Emma's plan had thrown his off track."Yeah, you got pretty drunk last night. I had someone take you back to the hotel."Mark became even more worried upon hearing this. He couldn’t understand why he had gotten so drunk. He recalled not drinking that much last night. Emma knew he was very confused, so she added more detail."Don't you remember? You kept drinking bottle after bottle of wine.
"Emma, do you know how much I truly despise you? Lily is much better than you," Mark said as he plunged a sharp knife in her heart.“I truly waited for this day and for you to die,” he finished speaking, laughed loudly, and stood up, leaving Emma to embrace the knife that was slowly dripping blood out of her heart."I never loved you; it was all just a drama for everyone. You loved me, right? Then die to prove it."The atmosphere in the house was both cold and rigid, and the room was now filled with the scent of fresh blood. Emma's body was covered in wounds, and she helplessly looked at him with eyes full of disgust, regretting that she couldn't rise and stab him. Emma hated him to the core. She never expected that this marriage was initially his plan, and her love for him had vanished completely. If someone were to ask her the biggest regret of her life, Emma would not hesitate to answer: loving him and marrying a scoundrel like him."Emma, why do you look so gloomy since you came b
After bringing Nancy home, Emma found herself standing in front of the Green mansion, a place both familiar and estranged, five years ago.Unable to restrain her emotions, Emma's feelings surged as she entered the grand hall, seeing her parents' portraits, their eyes filled with tears. If it weren't for her misguided marriage to Mark in the past, her parents wouldn't have met such a tragic end. The accident that year was Mark's conspiracy, resulting in the deaths of both her father and mother. Emma, fortunately, survived, embraced by them but left with the agony she didn't want to remember or relive."Emma, weren't you supposed to be at Mount Denali, praying for Mark's happiness? Why are you back so soon?" Her mother, Mabel, asked gently.Emma struggled to hold back tears in her eyes. She approached her mother, smiling faintly, realizing that everything had changed. Emma would make Mark pay for his deeds, and the William family would soon be ruined by her hands, ensuring that no one w
Today, Emma wore a shoulder-bearing dress that showcased her alluring figure. Her everyday tied-up hair was now gently let loose, adding to her allure. She glanced around; in her previous life, she never visited places like this, always holding a hint of disdain. Her phone chimed with a text message, and she picked it up."Where are you?" It was a message from Nancy, who had planned to go shopping together but couldn't find Emma at home."I'm at the nightclub."On the other end, Nancy almost dropped her phone. Emma, who had never come to such places before, was now here on her own."Who are you with?""Alone."Nancy, worried for her friend, quickly got in her car and headed to the nightclub. Emma placed her phone down, continued scanning the surroundings, and took a sip of her drink, frowning."If you can't handle it, don't drink it."A deep, low voice echoed in Emma's ear. She turned her head and recognized David. Today, Emma's purpose for coming here was to meet David. She had resea
Upon returning from the nightclub, Emma hurriedly took a shower. She lay on her beloved bed, holding the black card she took from David's wallet. This man was truly unpredictable, but he was the one who would help Emma seek revenge.Emma recalled the scene just before her death. At that time, she had returned from studying abroad, complying with her family's intention to arrange a marriage. The predetermined marriage filled Emma with resentment. She loved Mark, but he married her only for the wealth of the Wilson family.FLASHBACKThe car was navigating through the heavy rain on a difficult road, carrying Emma, her parents, and Mark back to the mansion."Dad? The road seems challenging.""Yes, you and your mother should sit carefully."Normally, the family's private driver would take them, but today, Emma's father insisted on driving himself. Suddenly, the brakes failed, and the speed increased rapidly. Outside, heavy rain made the road even more challenging."Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"The
The entire night, Emma found it difficult to sleep. Early in the morning, she woke up to find that she was late, hastily grabbing her phone."Damn it, why hasn't David contacted me?"Emma thought David would get in touch eventually, but there was no sign of any communication from him. Annoyed, she tossed David's black card into her wardrobe before heading downstairs."Miss, where are you going?"The butler was already there, waiting for Emma. She had returned from studying abroad just a few days ago. Mark was on a business trip at the same time, so they hadn't had a chance to meet. Though Emma, having come back to life, knew Mark was lying, she paid no attention."I'm going to the company.""The master said you should rest. Tonight, we need to meet the young master Mark's family."Hearing this, Emma furrowed her brows, looking around to ensure no one was present before turning to the butler."I know, I'll go to the company and talk to my father.""Yes."Finally, after Emma spoke, the
