Lila’s POV

For several seconds, I could do nothing but stare at him.

Elias.

He was standing right in front of me, close enough that I could see the faint shadows beneath his dark blue eyes, the slight tension in his jaw, and the familiar crease between his brows that appeared whenever something displeased him. His face was no longer pale, his breathing seemed steady, and there was no sign of the weakness that had terrified me the night he collapsed.

He looked well.

More than well, actually. He

Lila’s POVFor several seconds, I could do nothing but stare at him.Elias.He was standing right in front of me, close enough that I could see the faint shadows beneath his dark blue eyes, the slight tension in his jaw, and the familiar crease between his brows that appeared whenever something displeased him. His face was no longer pale, his breathing seemed steady, and there was no sign of the weakness that had terrified me the night he collapsed. He looked well.More than well, actually. He looked like himself again, perhaps even better than I remembered, as though the two weeks he had spent recovering had done nothing to diminish the commanding presence that seemed to follow him wherever he went.I knew he was alive. My mother had told me he was recovering, and I had repeated those words to myself enough times that they had gradually become something I could accept without questioning. But knowing he was alive and seeing him standing before me were two entirely different things.T

Lila's POV“The light catches in your eyes,” he continued, glancing toward the sun slipping between the trees. “It's like sunlight finding its way through a room that's been kept dark for too long. For a moment, everything looks a little warmer.”My face grew hotter.“That was unnecessarily poetic.”“Was it inaccurate?”I tried to come up with a response, but nothing came to mind quickly enough.Adrian smiled. “I'll take that as a no.”I looked away, pretending to be interested in the fountain again. The water caught the fading sunlight, scattering it into small, trembling reflections. I could feel my cheeks cooling, though the warmth in my chest lingered. It had been a long time since someone had spoken to me without asking for anything in return.Elias's attention had once meant everything to me. I had spent so much of my life searching for signs that he saw me, that I mattered to him, that I wasn't simply a girl who happened to share a bond with the future Alpha King. I had learned

  • Reborn As The Alpha King’s Rejected Mate   Twenty-Five

Lila’s POVAnother two weeks passed, and I made a promise to myself.I would stop asking about Elias. It sounded simple enough when I first decided on it.I would no longer search for news from the palace, question merchants who might have heard something, or linger whenever someone mentioned the royal household. I had already learned that he was recovering, that the physicians were satisfied with his progress, and that he was expected to return to his usual duties once he had regained his strength. That was all I needed to know.He was alive. He was getting better. And I had no reason to ask for anything more.At least, that was what I kept telling myself.I was genuinely relieved that he had survived. Whatever had happened between us, whatever hurt I still carried from my first life, I couldn't pretend that his death would have meant nothing to me. I had seen him collapse with my own eyes. I had watched the color drain from his face, and for two weeks afterward, I had lived with the

Lila’s POVFor years, I had thought of Victor as a man who wanted control over the people closest to him. He wanted my mother obedient, Clara favored, and everyone else too frightened to challenge him.I had assumed his cruelty ended wherever his personal interests ended. Now, I wondered whether I had mistaken the limits of his ambition for the limits of his character.“How long has he been planning this?” I asked.“We don't know. Nessa heard enough to understand that it wasn't a new idea. They discussed alliances that had already been secured and payments that had already been made. There were names she didn't recognize, places she had never heard of, and references to shipments that were supposed to arrive without being recorded by the royal accounts.”Adrian paused.“She also heard them discuss the palace itself. They wanted people inside who could pass information to Victor, interfere with royal orders, and make sure the wrong people were blamed when something went wrong.”My mind

  • Reborn As The Alpha King’s Rejected Mate   Twenty-Three

Lila’s POVThe old chapel stood beyond the eastern gardens, where the royal grounds gradually gave way to a stretch of neglected woodland.I had passed it only once before, years ago, when my mother took me on a walk through the area. Even then, it had looked forgotten. Its stone walls were weathered by years of rain, and ivy had climbed around the narrow windows until they seemed almost part of the building itself. A faded crescent moon was carved above the wooden entrance, its edges worn smooth by time. The chapel had been built long before Silvermoon became the kingdom it was today. According to an old plaque near the entrance, it had once been a place where royal families came to pray to the Moon Goddess before important journeys, battles, and ceremonies. When a larger temple was constructed closer to the palace, the little chapel was abandoned.Only a few people visit it now. Perhaps that was why Adrian had chosen it.The sun was sinking behind the trees when I arrived. The air s

  • Reborn As The Alpha King’s Rejected Mate   Twenty-Two

Lila’s POVThe market was crowded that morning. It was the best place to hear news, especially when the palace had become so secretive. Merchants spoke to suppliers, servants occasionally visited to purchase household goods, and gossip traveled faster than any royal messenger could carry an official announcement. If something had happened to the Crown Prince, surely someone would know. Even a rumor would have been better than nothing.I stopped at a bread stall and pretended to examine the freshly baked loaves. The warm smell of bread drifted through the air, but I had no appetite. I picked up one loaf, turned it over in my hands, then set it down again.“So,” I asked casually, “Have you heard anything from the palace lately?”The seller glanced at me.“About what?”I forced a small smile. “Anything interesting. I heard the royal household has been unusually quiet.”“That isn't my concern.”“Of course. I was only asking.”He returned to arranging his bread. I waited a moment before tr
