“Don't shoot.”

Clara kept her rod raised as a man slowly stepped out from behind the shelves.

“Relax, it’s not a gun,” she said with a chuckle.

He looked nothing like the threat she had expected. His clothes were dirty and torn, his face was covered in dust, and his greasy hair hung messily over his forehead.

He looked exhausted, almost as though he had been hiding there for days.

Clara let out a quiet breath of relief, feeling some of the tension leave her shoulders.

“Who are you?”

Clara parked several streets away from the pharmacy and continued on foot, keeping close to the walls of the abandoned buildings as she moved through the quiet streets. She kept one hand near her weapon while her eyes constantly searched the surrounding area for anything that seemed out of place. When she reached a position where she had a clear view of the entrance, she crouched behind a broken wall and raised her binoculars.Nothing seemed unusual. There were no unfamiliar vehicles parked nearby, no strangers waiting around the entrance, and no suspicious movement between the surrounding buildings. Everything appeared exactly as it should.Maybe she had been wrong about Rachel.Perhaps Clara had allowed fear to cloud her judgment.Clara watched the empty street for a few more seconds before finally turning away. One location had been clean. Two remained. After another thirty minutes, Clara arrived at the warehouse, but nothing about the place suggested that anyone had been there re

The next morning, Clara waited until most of the survivors were busy with their usual tasks before finding Marcus. He was near the entrance, checking the weapons with two of the defenders. The moment he noticed Clara approaching, he handed one of the guns to the man beside him and stepped away from the others.“What is it?” Marcus asked quietly.Clara glanced around to make sure no one was close enough to overhear them before lowering her voice.“I did something last night.”Marcus studied her face, his brows drawing together.“That sounds worrying already.”Clara almost smiled, but the tension sitting heavily in her chest made it difficult.“I gave three people different information about today's supply runs.”Marcus's expression changed immediately.“Who?” He asked.“Rachel was told about the pharmacy. Another survivor was told about an abandoned warehouse, and Derek was told about a food supply location.”For a moment, Marcus simply stared at her. Then understanding slowly appeared

Derek returned a few minutes later with a small medical kit in his hands. He crouched beside Clara and opened it, his expression still tense from what she had told him.“Let me see,” he said.Marcus was already gathering the survivors.Something about his expression told her this wasn't another training session.“Everyone, come here,” Marcus called. The survivors slowly gathered around him, some looking confused while others exchanged uneasy glances. Clara walked over and stood beside Elena.Marcus waited until everyone was paying attention before speaking.“We're changing a few things.”A murmur moved through the group.Marcus raised his hand, and the conversation gradually died down.“From now on, nobody leaves the station alone,” he announced. “If you need to leave for any reason, you tell me, Clara or Elena first. Nobody walks through those gates without us knowing.”One of the men raised his hand.“What if someone just wants to look around the area?”“No,” Marcus replied firmly.

Clara drove back to the fire station faster than she normally would, her hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly that her knuckles had begun to ache. Every few seconds, her eyes flicked toward the rearview mirror. The road behind her was empty, but she still expected to see the same man following her.She forced herself to take a slow breath. She had escaped. That was what mattered.Yet the words kept replaying in her head.By the time the fire station came into view, Clara's pulse had finally begun to settle. She drove through the gates and parked near the entrance, but the moment she stepped out of the car, Marcus noticed her.He had been helping two survivors carry bags of supplies across the compound, but he immediately stopped and stared at her.“Clara?”She didn't answer. She shut the car door and started walking toward the building, hoping she could reach somewhere quiet before anyone noticed how badly shaken she was. Marcus quickly handed the bags to the nearest survivo

Clara folded the list and slipped it into her pocket.“I’m going into the city.”Marcus looked up from the rifle he was cleaning. “For what?”“Gardening supplies.”His expression changed immediately. “I’ll come with you.”Clara paused. For a moment, she almost agreed. Having Marcus with her would make things easier. He was strong, experienced, and capable of handling himself, which meant she wouldn't have to worry about watching her back every second. Then the System warning flashed through her mind.[MARCUS WEBB CANNOT ACCOMPANY THE HOST.]Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table as the System's warning echoed in her mind. She couldn't take Marcus with her, not this time.“I'll go alone.”Marcus frowned. “Why?”“I'll be quick.”“That wasn't what I asked.”Clara met his eyes. “I need you here.”Marcus lowered the rifle onto his lap. “Why?”“Because Elena is busy with the research, and someone needs to keep an eye on everyone.”He glanced toward the research room before looki
