Richard’s smile didn’t waver, but his eyes darkened. Every gesture was measured, deliberate testing her.

“You think you can humiliate me in my own circle?” he asked, voice quiet, almost casual. “Do you even know what you’re risking?”

Katherine’s hand tightened on the Sutherland ring. She lifted her chin, meeting his gaze calmly. No tremor, no flinch. Every movement was precise, controlled. Let him underestimate me, she thought. He won’t see what’s coming.

Steve’s muscles tensed beside her, ready to react, but he didn’t move hastily. He let Katherine’s silent confidence set the tone.

Richard stepped closer, slow, dangerous. “I should remind you,” he said softly, eyes scanning her posture, her calm composure, “that I know how to make people regret their defiance. I’ve made them pay for much less.”

A flicker of unease rippled through the guests, but Katherine remained perfectly still. Her lips curved into the faintest smile.

“I’m not afraid of you,” she said quietly, letting the words carry more weight than a shout ever could.

Richard tilted his head, intrigued. Interesting. He thought. She’s not reacting the way I expected. She’s calculating.

Steve stepped forward subtly, placing himself between Katherine and Richard, his presence steady, protective.

“I suggest you leave,” he said quietly, every muscle coiled for defense. “She doesn’t need threats. And you won’t touch her while I’m here.”

Katherine’s eyes widened slightly. He’s defending me and he’s a complete stranger. It was the first time anyone had stood up for her like this, without hesitation, without fear.

Richard’s eyes flicked to him, sharp and appraising.

“Ah, acting like a guardian. Convenient,” he said, voice calm but venomous. He didn’t advance further, choosing instead to gauge Katherine’s response.

Katherine saw the subtle test. He wanted to see if she would hesitate, if fear would show. But she didn’t falter. Her fingers slid over the Sutherland ring in her palm. A silent, private promise: Not this time. Not ever again.

“You’re bold,” Richard said softly, his smile curling at the corners. “But boldness can be punished.”

“I know what I want,” Katherine replied evenly. “And it’s not you.”

Richard’s gaze hardened, but he didn’t speak. He circled them slowly, like a predator evaluating its prey, forcing Katherine to subtly adjust her stance, ensuring she remained in control of the room. Every step he took was a test. Every pause was a challenge.

Steve mirrored her movements, keeping an invisible shield between her and Richard, his eyes alert to any sudden action. He didn’t need to speak; his readiness alone was a warning.

Nerine tugged Katherine’s hand, her small grip reminding her that she had allies here. Katherine’s eyes softened ever so slightly, a glance to reassure the girl, then snapped back to Richard. She allowed a subtle shift of the Sutherland ring in her hand, a calculated move that drew Richard’s eyes.

That was all it took.

Richard’s lips twitched with irritation. “You’re playing a dangerous game,” he said, coldly amused. “One wrong move, and you’ll regret it.”

Katherine took a step closer to Steve, quietly letting her resolve transfer to action. “I’m not playing. I’m choosing,” she said softly, almost a whisper, but every word carried power.

Richard froze. Something in her voice, in the confidence she radiated, unnerved him. He had expected fear, hesitation, submission. Instead, she radiated calm authority, and it unnerved him.

Steve’s eyes flicked between her and Richard. The tension stretched, every second a test of wills. Then Katherine lifted the Sutherland ring and extended it toward Steve.

“Marry me,” she said, clear, unwavering.

The restaurant seemed to hold its breath.

Steve blinked, absorbing the weight of her words. His daughter’s hand gripped his, eyes wide with hope. He saw the determination in Katherine’s gaze, the silent power she wielded. This wasn’t impulsive or naïve; it was calculated, measured, inevitable.

Richard’s jaw tightened. He took a step forward, ready to object, to assert control.

“You are crazy!” Richard blurted. “You love me. How can you marry---”

Steve didn’t hesitate. Calm, deliberate, he took Katherine’s hand. “Yes,” he said firmly.

Richard froze mid-step, shock flashing across his features. “What?”

Steve’s grip tightened around Katherine’s hand. “Yes,” he repeated. “I will marry you.”

A hush fell across the restaurant. The storm outside raged on, lightning flickering through the windows. Shadows danced across polished floors, reflecting the tension, the new alliances, the silent battle lines.

Richard’s eyes burned with rage, but he did not advance. He studied them both, his mind calculating, already plotting his next move.

Katherine’s lips curved into the faintest, controlled smile. She had won the first round. Quietly. Without revealing her secrets.

And in that moment, the tide had shifted.

The silent game had begun.

“Do you always make life this complicated?” he asked, voice low but amused.

Katherine didn’t look up. “Not complicated,” she said evenly. “Calculated.” Her fingers traced the curves of the ring. “I’ve made mistakes before. I won’t repeat this time.”
