LOGINSharon stared, convinced that she hadn't heard her clearly. The beating she had received had obviously damaged her hearing.
"I am sorry my Luna." Gaia said softly, "I know it hurts to hear it, but Mona Wales is now living with the Alpha. She moved in a day after your arrest." Sharon felt as if someone had plunged a knife into her own chest, like she was being accused of doing to the Agba Luna. Mona! Her best friend? The woman who's son she had cured of the meningitis that threatened to kill him? How could she do this to her? And Alpha Jerry, the man who claimed to love her and called her the best thing that ever happened to him. Had he forgotten about that love so soon? "That's not possible. Why would the Alpha move another woman, especially my best friend, in so quickly. He loves me." Sharon said aloud in her despair. Gaia looked uncomfortable and Sharon guessed she knew the answer. "Gaia," she said, her voice trembling. "Is there more you are not telling me?" Gaia nodded sadly. "Luna I don't want to break your heart but you need to know. On the day of your arrest I overhead Beta Frank telling Mona that this was the time to move in. That the evidence against you was overwhelming and you were not going to escape your punishment, so she should hurry and secure the Luna spot. He said that it would be easier for her because," she hesitated. "Because Kyle was the Alpha's son." "What!" Sharon yelled as loudly as she could. Thankfully her voice was so weak it couldn't rise very high. "Not so loud my Luna." Gaia said fearfully glancing at the door. "This dosen't make sense. How can Kyle be the Alphs son? Mona had said she had been impregnated by a wolf she didn't know after a drunken one night stand." Sharon asked, her head threatening to explode in confusion. "She obvious lied Luna." Gaia said firmly. Suddenly it all made sense. "Obviously she has something to do with the Agba Luna death. It makes sense. Her father is the pack Beta, he is the one supervising my torture. This is all his plan to get rid of me and have his daughter take my place." Sharon said aloud. "You may be right Luna. Beta Frank could be the killer. But the Alpha would never believe us if we told him." Gaia began gathering the plates and water bottle. "I have to go now my Luna, although I hate leaving you like this. Now that we know who framed you is there anything more I can do to help you regain your freedom?" Sharon thought quickly. "Aside from you, who else is on my side in the palace?" "Alpha Jerry's sister, Gamma Judy. She is your strongest supporter. She has been raising hell since your arrest. She insists you didn't kill the Agba Luna and wants you released." "Then we need her. "Sharon said urgently. "Get a message to her, but don't sign your name and don't speak to her directly, it's too risky. Instead leave a note in her room telling her I have discovered who the real killer is and I need to speak to her. Can you do that?" "I am not her maid so getting to her room will be difficult. " Gaia said in a worried tone. "But if it will help free you, I will do it." "Thank you Gaia. If I get out of here I must reward you." "I don't need a reward my Luna," she said, shaking her head. "You already saved my mother's life. And you have always treated us with kindness and respect. It is a shame others have forgotten." She said sadly. "Don't worry about it. Just get a message to Judy as quickly as you can." "Yes my Luna." She kissed her broken fingers as a sign of respect and hurried out. Alone, Sharon let her head rest back against the wall. The pain in her body throbbed with every breath, but her mind was racing. Mona had slept with her husband and bore his child? She still couldn't believe it. She was like a sister to her. They had grown up together and Sharon always protected her from bullies mocking her because she was a late bloomer. They had shared meals, dreams, and laughter. Both of them had apprenticed under the same healer. But while Sharon had excelled and become one of the most popular healer in the land, Mona had been dismissed after a month for incompetence. Still, Sharon made sure the difference never affected thier friendship. When she had married Jerry Mona had been her maid of honor, and was a regular vistor to the palace until she came crying to her one day that she was pregnant. "It was a stupid drunken one night stand! I don't know who the father is! " She cried. "My dad has ordered me out of the house so I won't bring shame to our family." "He should temper justice with mercy, we all make mistakes." Sharon said trying to soothe her. "Let me talk to him." "No. His mind is made up. I have to leave." "Where will you go? How will you cope alone and pregnant?" "I will probably die, which is a good end to my miserable life." She said, tears rolling down her cheeks." "You won't." Sharon had smiled. "Move into the palace, there is enough room. I will give you a job as the palace store keeper. It's easy work and you get to live here. Also no one will call you names because your child dosen't have a father." Mona had hugged her, brimming with gratitude. Sharon had helped her deliver Kyle and cured him of life threatening meningitis. When the former Beta died and Jerry was looking for a new one, Sharon had insisted he pick Mona's father. "Why bring in someone new when you have a fearless, loyal man here who can serve you as Beta?" She had asked. Thinking of those words she smiled bitterly. Loyal my foot! After all she had done for Mona, her father, and that ungrateful pack, this was her reward. Betrayal, torture, and humiliation. Tears filled her eyes but she blinked them back. Thanks to Gaia she now knew who hee enemies were and they would regret plunging this knife into her back. The door open and Beta Frank and the Omega walked in. The sight of them made her so angry she couldn't even feel the pain of her wounds. "Are you ready to confess Sharon?" Frank asked. It won't be long now you snake. She thought. "I have nothing to say to you. I am innocent!" She said firmly. Frank's expression darkened. He gave a short nod to the Omega, who raised his whip and came towards her."Ruto, I wasn't expecting you." Nic told his brother."I know. I came to wish you luck, but met your Retainer who told me you went to find some limestone to shine your sword. Is that true?"Nic almost rolled his eyes. Had his Retainer forgotten the lie?"Yes. It is true. My sword needed a little more sharpness.""Where is the limestone?" Ruto asked staring at his empty hands."I didn't find any.""Really? Oh wait," he slapped his forehead. "Your Retainer actually said you went to relieve yourself, so which is it?"Nic stared at him, realizing he had been tricked. Ruto laughed."You know, I don't think you went to do either, I think you went to see Alpha Goreys' pretty daughter. Am I right?""Keep your voice down. If you already know why ask?" Nic said, sitting on the bed beside him.""I want to see your blush when you talk about her." He laughed again.Nic playfully punched his arm."She came to wish me luck," Nic explained, "and she gave me this." He brought out the fan, from where h
Nic sat in his small tent polishing his sword, his heart pounding with excitement. The roar of the crowd was so loud it seemed to shake the ground. The Annual Lunar Games were always a time of excitement. All twenty packs of Wolf Kingdom gathered together while their young nobles competed in archery, swordsmanship, racing, and other contests for the coveted, Lunar Medal. Nic was the reigning champion and was determine to keep his title. Black Fang was the poorest of the twenty packs, bringing them glory in the Games was the least he could do. His retainer entered the tent. "My lord, you have a visitor." "Later. I'm busy." The retainer lowered his voice. "It's Lady Fira. She's waiting at the edge of the tournament grounds. She says it's urgent." Nic stood up immediately. “Stay here. If anyone asks for me, say I went to relieve myself.” He instructed the retainer. He hurried to the woods surrounding the training ground, where he knew Fira would be. On the way he ra
"So my Luna, what did you want to talk about?" Nic asked, as they walked away from the palace and into the garden. "Like I said, our common enemy. Som." "I didn't know you loathed that despicable son of a vampire as much as I did." "Of course I do. Didn't you see how he humiliated me the day the Alpha came back from the Moon Pool? Before then he encouraged a servant to disrespect me. And he is insufferable! Strutting around as if he were the Kingdom Beta, when he is nothing more than the Alpha of a pack not even half as worthy as yours. He needs to be taught a lesson in humility. Unfortunately Jerry is too weak to do what needs to be done. Wolf Kingdom needs a strong ruler." "And who do you suggest is strong enough?" Nic asked cautiously. "My son of course. Kyle will be the strongest Alpha to ever rule Wolf Kingdom. Have you seen him at the training? He is already showing promise." Mona said proudly. Last I heard, you nearly tore the palace apart when the Alpha suggested the boy
“Then let’s begin. The first step is killing Jerry –“ “Shhhh…I know. But wait.” “Again? You said once Jerry came back from the Moon Pool –“ “We'd kill him. I know. But the ceremony didn’t go as planned. Give it some time. Let’s see what happens. If Lupus Tenebris doesn’t show his face again then the threat is really over, and we can continue with our plan.” “How long do we have to wait?” Mona asked gnashing her teeth. “Till we are sure the evil wolf is no more. Meanwhile leave the gathering of allies to me. Your concern should be getting the people to like you. It will help make the throne more comfortable when you eventually sit on it.” There was a knock and a servant brought in the pie. Mona mumbled an excuse and stalked out. She managed to contain her anger till she entered her solar. The nanny was there, playing with Kyle. One look at the Luna's face and she fled with the child. She had worked with Mona enough to know when she got like this no one, not even her
Don’t you see eating here is better father? There is peace and quiet. No Alphas behaving like children. Imagine the disgraceful way Nic and Som were behaving.” Frank shrugged. “Their animosity goes back decades. I doubt even the Goddess can bring them together.” “Is it so bad that Nic would oppose a good idea just because Som suggested it?” She asked, pretending not to know the answer. “My dear, Nic would watch his pack burn if it meant accepting water from Som. That’s how bad it is.” Her eyes widened. “Hmmm…. Everyone knows Som is the Alphas strongest supporter. And Jerry admires him too. Don’t you think Nic would support anyone who tried to destroy that friendship? Say if someone tried to take the throne away from the Alpha?” She asked carefully. The piece of meat Frank had been about to swallow suddenly got stuck in his throat. So this was why Mona had personally brought him his lunch, to pitch her ill thought out ideas. “Think about it father.” She said eagerly. “Ni
The uproar in the Great Hall could be heard across the courtyard. As usual the loudest voices belonged to Alpha Som and Alpha Nic. “Silence!” Jerry yelled impatiently. “This meeting was called to decide how to move forward from the failed ceremony at the Moon Pool, instead it had degenerated into a shouting match. Let’s have some order.” “We would have order if this incompetent wolf wasn’t a part of the council.” Nic said, glaring at Som scornfully. “I know you are not addressing me Alpha Nic, a wolf like you whose whole life screams incompetence can’t call anyone else’s incompetent.” Som said calmly. “An Alpha of a waste pack like yours, shouldn’t be here.” Nic retorted. “Waste pack? How is your wife by the way? I’ll need a sack to carry the waste from my pack. Is she available?” There was a burst of laughter from the other Alphas. Nic’s dark face darkened even more. His claws came out and he began to shift, ready to rip Som’s head from his body. “Enough!” Jerry roared,
It was a red noxala. Seeing a one wasn’t unusual . The winged creatures were messenger birds created by the Moon Goddess to carry messages between the kingdoms. But what shocked them was seeing one killed violently. Killing a noxala was forbidden, the violators were punished by the Moon Goddess her
“Do I need to repeat myself?” Mona barked. “I said leave.” Anna froze, terror flooding her pale face. “Yes Luna. I will do that immediately.” “No you will not!” A voice behind them thundered. Both women turned to see councilman Som striding toward them, his silvered hair catching the sun
That had been weeks ago. Jerry wasn’t afraid of the rouges, but he felt it best to warn his subjects to keep away from the wastelands. Now he was being forced to go against his own warning.“Fine. The wastelands it is.” He nodded.“We should take more men.” A general suggested. “If the rouges try t
Shouldn’t we be attacking again? At least attack the palace and kill Jerry.” Judy asked Lupus Tenebris as she restlessly paced the cold stone floors of her throne room. Her red eyes burning with impatience. It was a week since their last attack and she was hold up in White Hollow, impatient to do mo
