**Chapter 24**

I do not give Luca the vial.

I do not throw it away either. I slide it into the hem of my sleeve, where the glass lies against my wrist like a cold coin, and I walk to the terrace with my face arranged.

Luca has set breakfast for two at a small iron table in the sun. No family. No guards within earshot. A pot of coffee, a plate of bread and figs, and two cups, one of them already sweetened to the exact wrong amount I seemed to like last night.

He stands when he sees me. "You are

**Chapter 28**I wait until the chapel is empty.Dante lets himself be led out by two guards, still sobbing, still gripping Luca's sleeve until the last second. When the door closes behind him, the candles seem to burn lower. Luca stands by the tomb with his head bowed. I watch his shoulders and know he is grieving, truly, for an uncle he barely liked and a cousin he has loved since they were boys.I pick up the silver bell and put it in my pocket."Luca.""Not now.""It has to be now."He turns. His eyes are red. "Elena, I have just watched Dante lose his father. Whatever it is, give me an hour.""Dante knew."He goes very still."He said he did not know his father was dead. The skill marked it at three percent." I keep my voice low, though we are alone. "He knew, Luca. He has known since last night."For a long moment he does not speak. I see the refusal rise in his face, and I see the effort it takes him to push it down. He crosses to the nearest pew and sits heavily."We were rais

Chapter 27 Nobody moves for the space of a breath. Matteo's hand is still reaching for Luca's arm. Twelve of Enzo's men stand in the doorway like a wall of black coats. Behind them Giulia waits with her bandaged hand raised, smiling the small smile of a woman who has already won. I feel Luca shift beside me. He is calculating the distance to the side door, the count of guns, the number of men who would have to die so I could live. I know because I have learned to read his shoulders. "Don't," I whisper. "Elena." "Whatever you're about to do. Don't." "They will take me." "I know." My fingers find the silver bell in his palm, the tiny one from the empty tomb. I do not know why I take it. Something in the blue ink, maybe. The bell was only to wake them. "Let them think you'll come." His eyes cut to mine. "You have a plan." "I have a bell." He almost laughs. It is a terrible sound, but it is real, and it steadies us both. Matteo steps closer. Sweat runs down his temple, and his

**Chapter 26**We run.Luca takes the stairs two at a time with his hand locked around mine, and I hold up the skirt of my dress and do not slow down. Salvatore cannot keep the pace. He calls after us to go on, and Luca shouts for a guard to carry the old man, and then we are out the side door and crossing the lawn toward the chapel. The bell is still ringing. Thirteen, I counted. It stopped on thirteen. Now the only sound is our feet on gravel and my own breath sawing in my throat. The chapel stands at the edge of the grounds, a squat gray building with a slate roof and a single narrow tower. The bell rope hangs from the tower into the nave. When Luca shoves the heavy door open, the rope is swinging gently back and forth.Nobody is holding it."Stay behind me," he says."No.""Elena.""I told you. I'm in this."He looks at me for half a second. Then he nods, once, and steps inside with me at his shoulder. The nave is cold and dim. Candles burn in iron stands along the walls, dozens o

**Chapter 25**I open the library door with my sleeve pulled down over the blue smear on my thumb.Luca stands in the corridor with his phone in one hand. He looks at my face, then past me at the narrow staircase to the old study. Salvatore has already vanished. The only sign of him is the faint smell of cold tea."You are shaking," Luca says."It's nothing.""You said that on the first night.""And it was true then, too."He does not smile. He takes my wrist, turns it over, and finds the blue streak on my thumb. His eyes narrow, but he only says, "Come and look at the bag. Then you can tell me what it is not."---The man at the gate is young, maybe twenty-five, thin and sunburned, with Bruno's jaw and none of Bruno's calm. Two guards hold him by the elbows. A canvas bag sits at his feet.I know it before I am close enough to touch it.The strap has a tear near the buckle. I caught it on the bed frame, the night I packed it, and told myself I would stitch it later. Seeing it in dayli

"You are pale.""I didn't sleep well.""You slept for nine hours.""Badly, then."He studies me with that steady, unnerving attention. I pour coffee so I have something to do with my hands. My sleeve shifts and I pull it down fast."Your father," he says. "What did he want?""To see my mother."[Truthfulness: 40%.]The number appears and vanishes. I wish I could turn it off. I look at the figs.Luca does not call me on it. He butters a piece of bread, sets it on my plate, and says, "I have asked a doctor

**Chapter 23**I wake with a blanket over my shoulders and a man in the armchair.Luca has not gone to the couch. He sits slumped against the wing of the chair with his jacket off and one hand still holding the black iron key, his head tipped back, his mouth slightly open. In sleep he looks about nineteen.I lie there a long time and do not move.*Eighty-eight days. Find another bride, or make him stop loving you.*Last night, in the dark of the vault, I did not hear the second half. I heard his hand close around mine and I held on. This morning the words come back clear and cold, and I do the arithmetic I should have done then. If Luca stops, he lives. If he keeps going, the door takes him. A man cannot be saved by a woman who lets him fall further.I decide, lying there, that I will be unkind. It does not take long. He opens his eyes, finds me looking, and the sleepy softness crosses his face before he can stop it. He smiles. A small, unguarded thing.I look away."Good morning," he
