MasukLena stared at Ethan's wrist.
The silver symbol was unmistakable.
Three lines crossing a circle.
The same mark that had appeared on her hand.
The same symbol from the notebook.
The same symbol belonging to the people hunting them.
"Ethan," she whispered.
He turned his wrist beneath the moonlight.
The mark pulsed once.
Then disappeared.
He looked at Lena.
"What just happened?"
"I don't know."
"You saw it?"
"Yes."
The stranger was still on the ground nearby.
Lena crouched beside him.
"What did you do to us?"
His eyes opened slightly.
"I didn't."
"Then who did?"
He looked at Ethan.
"You're connected."
"To what?"
"The system."
Ethan's expression hardened.
"What system?"
The stranger tried to speak again.
Before he could, headlights appeared through the trees.
"They found us," he whispered.
Ethan immediately pulled Lena behind him.
"Run."
They moved deeper into the forest.
Branches struck against their clothing as they pushed forward.
Behind them, voices echoed between the trees.
"Search the eastern side!"
"Check the road!"
"Don't let them reach the highway!"
Lena's breathing became heavier.
She looked back once.
Three flashlights moved through the darkness.
Then more appeared.
"There are too many," she whispered.
Ethan grabbed her hand.
"Keep moving."
They reached a steep slope.
At the bottom was an old dirt road.
A vehicle waited there.
Black.
Engine running.
The stranger had been telling the truth.
Ethan opened the passenger door.
"Get in."
Lena climbed inside.
Ethan followed.
The vehicle accelerated immediately.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then Ethan looked at the rearview mirror.
"No one followed us."
Lena released a breath.
"What now?"
"First, we find out what this mark means."
He glanced at the black drive sitting between them.
"Then we find out who is behind Aurora."
Lena looked out the window.
The city lights were beginning to appear in the distance.
Her thoughts returned to the notebook.
Memory transfer.
Consciousness.
Subject L.C.
May 15, 2026.
She had always believed she was simply lucky enough to receive a second chance.
Now she wasn't sure.
Maybe someone had given it to her.
Maybe someone had chosen her.
Or maybe someone had been experimenting with death long before the apocalypse ever began.
"Ethan."
"Yes?"
"If Aurora existed before the apocalypse..."
He looked at her.
"Then the apocalypse wasn't the beginning."
Lena swallowed.
"It was the result."
Neither spoke after that.
An hour later, they arrived at a private Cross Industries property.
Ethan drove through a security gate and parked beneath an underground garage.
The place was empty.
No employees.
No guards.
No cameras that Lena could see.
"Safe?" she asked.
"For now."
They entered a private room.
Ethan placed the black drive on the table.
His laptop was disconnected from every network.
"Offline," he said.
He inserted the drive.
A single folder appeared.
AURORA — SUBJECT FILES
Lena's hands became cold.
There were hundreds of files.
Ethan opened the first.
A photograph appeared.
Lena.
Younger.
Standing inside a laboratory.
She stared at the screen.
"No."
Ethan said nothing.
Another photograph.
Lena wearing a white medical gown.
Another.
Lena sitting beside a machine.
Another.
Lena unconscious.
She stepped backward.
"I've never seen this."
Ethan looked at her.
"But you recognize yourself."
"Yes."
The next file opened automatically.
A recording.
A woman's voice filled the room.
"Subject L.C. continues to demonstrate unusual neurological activity."
Lena froze.
The recording continued.
"Memory retention after induced temporal displacement remains unstable."
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"Temporal displacement?"
The woman continued.
"The subject must not be informed of the procedure."
Lena felt sick.
"What procedure?"
The recording continued.
"If successful, Subject L.C. will return to an earlier biological state while retaining selected memories."
Silence.
Then another voice entered the recording.
A man's voice.
"How far back?"
"Three years."
Lena stopped breathing.
Ethan slowly turned toward her.
The recording continued.
"Estimated return date: May 12, 2023."
The exact date Lena had awakened.
She covered her mouth.
"No..."
The screen went black.
Then another message appeared.
SUBJECT SUCCESSFULLY RETURNED.
A second line appeared beneath it.
SECONDARY SUBJECT: ETHAN CROSS.
Lena's eyes widened.
Ethan stared at the screen.
"What?"
The file opened.
A photograph appeared.
Ethan.
Then another.
Then another.
The final document contained one sentence.
SECONDARY SUBJECT WILL AWAKEN ONLY IF PRIMARY SUBJECT SURVIVES.
Lena turned toward him.
"That's why you have the mark."
Ethan looked at his wrist.
The silver symbol appeared again.
Brighter this time.
Then his eyes suddenly changed.
He staggered.
Lena caught his arm.
"Ethan?"
He looked at her.
But his expression was different.
For one second, he seemed lost.
Then he whispered a sentence Lena had heard only once before.
On the Brooklyn Bridge.
Three years in the future.
"I remember."
Lena froze.
"What?"
His eyes filled with recognition.
"Lena."
Her heart stopped.
He looked directly at her.
"I remember the bridge."
To be continued....
"Ethan!"Lena screamed it.Her voice bounced off the metal walls.Nothing. No answer. He was just... gone. One second his hand was almost in hers. The next second, empty air.Daniel ran to where Ethan had been standing. "Don't! Don't touch the floor!"Lena froze mid-step.A thin circle of silver light had bloomed under her feet. It pulsed. Once. Then it was gone, like it was never there. The older Lena was staring at that spot, her face grey."He was taken.""By what?" Lena snapped. "By what? Tell me!""The system.""Then get him back! You know how this place works, get him back!"The older woman shook her head slowly."You don't get it. Ethan wasn't taken because he was weak, Lena."She turned and looked at the seventh door."He was taken because he's the key."_CLICK._A loud, heavy metallic click echoed through the whole chamber. The seventh door had unlocked itself.Lena didn't think. She just started walking toward it.Daniel grabbed her shoulder. "Wait. Lena, wait.""My husband
7.The countdown didn't stop.Lena couldn't breathe. The name on the screen was still there, burning white.ANCHOR: MAYA CARTERDaniel's voice cracked beside her. "Maya Carter?"Lena shook her head. No. No, that was wrong."That's not her name."Everyone turned to look at her.She had to force the words out."Maya's last name was Bennett. It's always been Bennett."Ethan's jaw tightened. His eyes never left the screen."Then why the hell is the system calling her Carter?""I don't know," Lena whispered. "I swear I don't know."6.The screen glitched.A photo popped up.Lena's stomach dropped. It was her old apartment.May 12, 2023.Maya by the kitchen window, holding that chipped blue mug she always stole."I remember that morning," Lena said. Her voice sounded far away, even to her.Daniel moved closer. "What happened that morning?"Lena stared at the photo like it might disappear."She came home around eight. She was late for work, she was pissed about traffic. She brought coffee. T
The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. "Lena, whatever you do, don't go near that door."Lena looked at him, her eyes wide, tears drying on her cheeks. "You said we were never supposed to open it. Why? Tell me
The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—
"I remember everything."Daniel's voice echoed through the enormous underground chamber, bouncing off metal and concrete and a thousand dead machines.Lena stared at him, her hand still clutching Ethan's.The seven figures remained motionless behind their open doors far below. Seven versions of her. Seven identical faces staring up at the platform. Seven silver marks glowing faintly in the dark, like eyes.Ethan slowly raised his weapon, his arm tight against Lena, pointing it straight at Daniel's chest."Daniel, stay where you are. Don't come any closer."Daniel ignored him completely. His silver eyes remained locked on Lena, and there was something terrible in them - pity and fear and guilt all at once."You shouldn't have come this far, Lena," he said quietly. "You were supposed to stop at Version Seven. Eight was never meant to wake up."Lena stepped forward, even though Ethan tried to hold her back. "You said you remembered everything.""I do.""Then tell me the truth," she said,
Lena fell. There was no floor. No walls. No up or down. Just endless black and the roar of air rushing past her ears, tearing her hair back. She didn't even have time to scream. Then something grabbed her wrist.Hard. Real. Flesh and bone and desperate strength."LENA!"She looked up, gasping, hair whipping across her face.Ethan.Not the silver-eyed copy from the hospital. Not the clean-suited stranger from the apartment. The _real_ Ethan. His face was bruised, a cut on his cheekbone, his clothes covered in gray dust and grime as if he'd been digging himself out of rubble. But his eyes - those dark, warm, worried eyes that had always found hers in a crowd - were unmistakable. They were _his_."Ethan!" She cried his name like it was air.He pulled her toward him with both arms, yanking her onto something solid. For a moment, neither of them spoke. She just held onto him, fists clenched in his shirt, breathing him in - dust and sweat and real, alive Ethan."You're real," she whispered
