CHAPTER 13 HE REMEMBERED

last update publish date: 2026-10-03 19:33:59

"I remember the bridge."

Lena couldn't move.

Those words had haunted her for months in the first timeline.

She had remembered Ethan's voice.

The broken bridge.

The chaos.

The moment they had realized there was nowhere left to run.

But now Ethan was standing in front of her, alive, three years before the apocalypse.

And he remembered too.

"What do you remember?" she whispered.

Ethan closed his eyes.

His breathing changed.

"I remember you."

Lena's eyes filled with tears.

He opened his eyes again.

"I remember running toward you."

She stepped closer.

"What else?"

"People were everywhere."

His voice became quieter.

"The city was burning."

Lena looked away.

She didn't want to hear the details.

Not again.

Ethan continued.

"I remember holding your hand."

Lena's fingers trembled.

"And then?"

He stared at her.

"We fell."

The room became silent.

That was enough.

They had both been there.

They had both died.

But Ethan's memories were returning differently.

Not all at once.

Like pieces of a shattered photograph slowly finding their places.

He suddenly grabbed the edge of the table.

Lena moved toward him.

"Ethan?"

He shook his head.

"Wait."

The silver mark on his wrist brightened.

The laptop screen flickered.

A new file appeared.

Neither of them had opened it.

MEMORY SYNCHRONIZATION: 3%.

Lena stared.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know."

The number changed.

4%.

Then 5%.

Ethan's eyes widened.

"I can feel it."

"What?"

"Memories."

He looked at Lena.

"Your memories."

Lena stepped backward.

"Mine?"

He nodded.

"Not everything. Just fragments."

Another number appeared.

6%.

Lena suddenly heard a voice inside her mind.

Not Ethan.

A woman.

Calm.

Controlled.

"If both subjects synchronize, the timeline becomes unstable."

Lena grabbed her head.

"Ethan!"

He reached for her.

"What happened?"

"I heard a voice."

"What did it say?"

"Something about synchronization."

The laptop displayed another message.

WARNING: TIMELINE DEVIATION 8.7%.

Ethan stared.

"We're changing things."

"We already knew that."

"No."

He pointed at the screen.

"It's measuring it."

Lena's eyes widened.

"The system is tracking the timeline."

"And someone can see the changes."

She immediately thought about the lodge.

The watcher.

The message.

The people chasing them.

"They know."

Ethan nodded.

"Then we need to move."

"Where?"

"Somewhere they won't expect."

Lena looked at him.

"The lodge?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because they already found it."

He closed the laptop.

"We need another location."

Lena thought for a moment.

Then remembered something.

"Your warehouse."

Ethan looked at her.

"Which one?"

"The old one near the river."

His expression changed.

"How do you know about that?"

"You told me."

"In the first timeline?"

"Yes."

"That building was sold two years ago."

Lena shook her head.

"Not anymore."

Ethan stared at her.

"What?"

"The sale never happened."

He immediately checked his phone.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

"You're right."

Lena smiled faintly.

"That's another change."

"No."

He looked at the screen.

"The buyer withdrew yesterday."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Lena's smile disappeared.

"Maybe because we changed it."

Ethan nodded.

They gathered the drive, notebook, and Aurora files.

Before leaving, Lena looked at the laptop one final time.

The synchronization number had stopped.

9.2%.

Then a new message appeared.

PRIMARY SUBJECT LOCATED.

A second line appeared.

SECONDARY SUBJECT ACTIVE.

Then:

RECOVERY TEAM DEPLOYED.

Lena's stomach dropped.

"They're coming."

Ethan picked up the keys.

"How long?"

The message changed.

17 MINUTES.

He looked at Lena.

"We have seventeen minutes."

They left the building.

The underground garage was silent.

Ethan started the car.

As they drove away, Lena looked through the rear window.

Nothing.

No vehicles.

No headlights.

Yet she couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching them.

After several minutes, Ethan spoke.

"There's something else."

"What?"

"I remember another place."

"Where?"

"The laboratory."

Lena turned toward him.

"You remember it?"

"Not clearly."

"What did you see?"

He tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"You."

"Me?"

"On a table."

Lena went silent.

He continued.

"There were people around you."

"Doctors?"

"Scientists."

"What were they doing?"

"I don't know."

He looked at her.

"But someone kept saying the same thing."

"What?"

Ethan's eyes met hers.

"Don't let her die twice."

Lena's breath caught.

Before she could respond, the car's dashboard suddenly went dark.

Every light disappeared.

The engine stopped.

They rolled to a halt.

Ethan tried the ignition.

Nothing.

Lena looked ahead.

Three vehicles were blocking the road.

Black SUVs.

Their doors opened simultaneously.

Men stepped out.

Ethan reached for his phone.

No signal.

Lena's palm began glowing.

A new message appeared on the dead dashboard.

RECOVERY BEGINS NOW.

Then another line appeared.

LENA CARTER — PRIMARY SUBJECT.

ETHAN CROSS — SECONDARY SUBJECT.

Lena looked at Ethan.

He looked back.

For the first time, neither of them had a plan.

Then the SUV doors opened.

And someone stepped out of the middle vehicle.

Lena recognized him immediately.

The man from the laboratory.

The man whose voice she had heard in her memories.

He looked directly at her.

"Hello, Lena."

He smiled.

"Welcome back."

"Ethan!"Lena screamed it.Her voice bounced off the metal walls.Nothing. No answer. He was just... gone. One second his hand was almost in hers. The next second, empty air.Daniel ran to where Ethan had been standing. "Don't! Don't touch the floor!"Lena froze mid-step.A thin circle of silver light had bloomed under her feet. It pulsed. Once. Then it was gone, like it was never there. The older Lena was staring at that spot, her face grey."He was taken.""By what?" Lena snapped. "By what? Tell me!""The system.""Then get him back! You know how this place works, get him back!"The older woman shook her head slowly."You don't get it. Ethan wasn't taken because he was weak, Lena."She turned and looked at the seventh door."He was taken because he's the key."_CLICK._A loud, heavy metallic click echoed through the whole chamber. The seventh door had unlocked itself.Lena didn't think. She just started walking toward it.Daniel grabbed her shoulder. "Wait. Lena, wait.""My husband

7.The countdown didn't stop.Lena couldn't breathe. The name on the screen was still there, burning white.ANCHOR: MAYA CARTERDaniel's voice cracked beside her. "Maya Carter?"Lena shook her head. No. No, that was wrong."That's not her name."Everyone turned to look at her.She had to force the words out."Maya's last name was Bennett. It's always been Bennett."Ethan's jaw tightened. His eyes never left the screen."Then why the hell is the system calling her Carter?""I don't know," Lena whispered. "I swear I don't know."6.The screen glitched.A photo popped up.Lena's stomach dropped. It was her old apartment.May 12, 2023.Maya by the kitchen window, holding that chipped blue mug she always stole."I remember that morning," Lena said. Her voice sounded far away, even to her.Daniel moved closer. "What happened that morning?"Lena stared at the photo like it might disappear."She came home around eight. She was late for work, she was pissed about traffic. She brought coffee. T

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 30 — THE THING BEHIND THE SEVENTH DOOR

The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. "Lena, whatever you do, don't go near that door."Lena looked at him, her eyes wide, tears drying on her cheeks. "You said we were never supposed to open it. Why? Tell me

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 29 — THE ANCHOR

The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 28 — THE SEVEN VERSIONS

"I remember everything."Daniel's voice echoed through the enormous underground chamber, bouncing off metal and concrete and a thousand dead machines.Lena stared at him, her hand still clutching Ethan's.The seven figures remained motionless behind their open doors far below. Seven versions of her. Seven identical faces staring up at the platform. Seven silver marks glowing faintly in the dark, like eyes.Ethan slowly raised his weapon, his arm tight against Lena, pointing it straight at Daniel's chest."Daniel, stay where you are. Don't come any closer."Daniel ignored him completely. His silver eyes remained locked on Lena, and there was something terrible in them - pity and fear and guilt all at once."You shouldn't have come this far, Lena," he said quietly. "You were supposed to stop at Version Seven. Eight was never meant to wake up."Lena stepped forward, even though Ethan tried to hold her back. "You said you remembered everything.""I do.""Then tell me the truth," she said,

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 27 — THE REAL ETHAN

Lena fell. There was no floor. No walls. No up or down. Just endless black and the roar of air rushing past her ears, tearing her hair back. She didn't even have time to scream. Then something grabbed her wrist.Hard. Real. Flesh and bone and desperate strength."LENA!"She looked up, gasping, hair whipping across her face.Ethan.Not the silver-eyed copy from the hospital. Not the clean-suited stranger from the apartment. The _real_ Ethan. His face was bruised, a cut on his cheekbone, his clothes covered in gray dust and grime as if he'd been digging himself out of rubble. But his eyes - those dark, warm, worried eyes that had always found hers in a crowd - were unmistakable. They were _his_."Ethan!" She cried his name like it was air.He pulled her toward him with both arms, yanking her onto something solid. For a moment, neither of them spoke. She just held onto him, fists clenched in his shirt, breathing him in - dust and sweat and real, alive Ethan."You're real," she whispered
