ADIRA’S POV
The pack members stood around watching us do something we had never done before. The air was thick with tension as they waited for my reply. Fear started to slip into my mind, and my courage faltered. What was I thinking? I should have just minded my business like I have done ever since. “No!” my wolf yelled in my head. “We are not going back to living that way again. Remember that we have a plan, and we need these omegas on our side.” she said to me “I am not strong enough to face off Ryder.” I replied. “Have you forgotten everything he did to us? Have you forgotten how you died?” she yelled. Those words seemed to knock me back to my senses. The omega whimpered behind me, and as I turned and saw her, my courage returned. I took a deep breath and replied, “No, I am not…” I said, but my voice shook lightly. Kaida burst into laughter, and others in the hall snickered. It is just like I remembered; they always loved to ridicule me. Ryder smirked. He must think that I am about to succumb again fearfully. But he has something else coming. “And I don't want to be. Like I said before, there is nothing special about you.” I added. My voice was firm and unwavering, just like before. “What is wrong with you?” Ryder blurted out angrily. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “Why is he angry? He never wanted me, but he wants me to want him?” I ignored him and looked around the hall. “Now I will sound this as a note of warning to everyone,” my voice boomed in the hall. “No one! I repeat, no one! Is allowed to treat an omega as they wish. From now on they must be treated well. If I get any report that anyone has broken this order, that person will be dealt with squarely.” I said firmly and authoritatively. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy. “Did you eat something bad? Since when did you dare speak with authority? You don't have such a right!” Xena spat. “On what grounds are you making this order?” Kaida asked, smirking. “I rank above everyone here except Alpha Ryder. I am the next in line to the alpha position of the Crescent-End pack, and currently I unofficially stand in the position of the Luna of this pack, as Lumina’s mother. So I can make the order, right, Alpha Ryder?” I grinned at him. His face was coated with annoyance and a deep scowl. “Right…” he replied reluctantly. I smirked. I could see the flicker of irritation in his eyes. He hated how much control I was commanding; he hated my boldness. As I looked around, I could see faces filled with surprise and shock. All they knew me as was the weak girl that followed Ryder around begging for love. But not anymore… “Kaida, did you hear that?” I asked with a little smirk. “I wouldn't want to repeat myself again.” I said, my tone sharp. “I know you want him so bad; you want to be his little plaything,” I said. Gasps filled the hall, and people started to murmur. Anger flashed in Kaida's eyes, and she clenched her fist. “But no matter how much you crave it, you will have to wait till I am gone. For now you are just a pack member who has her eyes on her alpha, who clearly doesn't want her.” I taunted her with a small grin. I could feel her anger radiating off her and Ryder’s hot stare on me. But I didn't care. I turned and stretched my hand to the omega. Her eyes widened, and she moved backwards, clenching her hands together. I withdrew my hand, understanding her fears. “Let's go…” I said to her, She bent to carry the bowl of laundry, but I immediately stopped her. “Leave them. Xena will take care of her own clothes.” She turned to me unsure of what to do. I gave her a reassuring nod, and she finally followed me. The sea of people parted, and I walked right through with bold steps like I fucking own the place. Why didn't I live like this in my past life? I can't believe I allowed all these weak people to walk all over me. I helped the Omega, who was limping back to her quarters. Immediately her friends saw her, and they rushed to her. Their faces filled with concern for her. One of the omegas walked up to me. “Thank you…” she said sincerely. “She would have returned with worse injuries if you didn't intervene.” She said, her eyes brimming with tears. As I watched them, it suddenly struck me. “These people are like me in my past life. They have no one to protect them. Protecting them should have been my duty in my past life, but I was too busy chasing after Ryder to actually do anything meaningful. But I am going to change that now. I will protect them from now on…” “Can we protect them? We have so much on our plate already.” My wolf? asked sadly. “Life is all about give and take. If I am going to make them my allies, then I need to keep them safe.” I replied. I stayed with them for the rest of the day. Made sure the young girl got treatment and they all ate before I decided to return home. Lumina’s nanny already took her back home after she slept off, so only I walked back home. It was already dark outside, and the omegas quarters was built a little bit farther away from the pack house, so it got lonely at night. As I walked down the pathway, I felt eyes on me. I snapped around, but no one was behind me. I continued to walk, but the feeling didn't go away. I didn’t hear anything, but I felt it. That cold, crawling weight of being watched and followed. I immediately increased my speed, my heart pounding in my chest. But the eerie feeling increased; I could no longer bear it and started to run. My heart pounded against my ribs as I ran without looking back.ADIRA'S POV“Lady Adira.” I heard Rose’s voice and a quick knock on the door.“Come in, Rose,” I replied.“We have a pack meeting in the big hall. I think the Alpha has an announcement to make. It was announced through the pack link, so I thought to come tell you because you might not be aware,” she said.I nodded. “He is going to announce it tonight? I thought he would want to delay it as much as he can,” I thought to myself.“Did something happen in the pack today? I asked. "I noticed a little bit of unrest when I was sitting by the window." “Apparently dead animals were found at the border. According to the people that got to see it before others were asked to leave, the dead animals looked like they were exhumed and then dropped at the border. That's quite disturbing. It's only been a few days since the last unfortunate event,” she said with worry.“It's probably Elder Theo’s doing. He is trying to cause unrest in the pack to aid the rumor,” I thought to myself.“That's quite uns
RYDER'S POV“Wow, talk about a woman that can stand her ground against bullies. That was a real turn-on,” my wolf swooned.I stood mute, my eyes still glued to the staircase where she had disappeared from. Something about her attitude stilled me and made me feel...Mum's loud hiss rang out, cutting me off from my train of thought before I could figure out how the entire exchange made me feel.I turned to her. “What is this really about?” I asked. Her eyes narrowed. “I am surprised that you are asking me that, Ryder. That woman accused me of spreading the rumor about her. Can you believe that?” Mum snapped.“Well, did you?” I asked. She was taken aback by the question, but I didn't really care. I too wanted to know who started this rumor, and a part of me knew Mum was capable of doing it because she doesn't like Adira.“How can you ask such a question?” Her nose flared. “Or are you supporting her and accusing me of something?”Her defensiveness almost made me believe that Adira might b
ADIRA'S POVAfter the discussion with Lyra, I walked into the house hoping to find quiet solitude to have some time to myself before Lumina's nanny would bring her back. But to my greatest surprise I saw Mrs Willow and Claudia in the house.I stopped in my tracks as I saw them waiting to get served by the omega that was cooking. It had been a while since they did something like this, and today of all days I really didn't want to see any of them.I released a deep sigh and continued on my way. On days like this I would have gone to the cave, but I haven't been able to return there since Lumina's kidnap.“Traitor,” I heard Claudia mutter under her breath. The word forced me to stop. “What did you just say?” I snapped.“Why are you glaring at her like she said something wrong?” Mrs Willow interjected.“She didn't?” I asked her.“Of course not, she didn't. She only stated a clear fact. Are you not a traitor?” she asked, her voice daring.“Why would I be a traitor? What did I do that would
THIRD PERSON POVAfter I left the office, I headed to the nursery to see Lumina first before anything else. I stood by the door and watched her play for a while without her seeing me.And true to Ryder's words, four warriors were guarding the vicinity for Lumina's safety.“Thank you for your good work,” I greeted them. They inclined their heads slightly. “It's our duty to protect her,” they replied.I turned to leave, but something crossed my mind, and I turned back. “I heard the story going around the pack that I am involved with the rogues, and I also heard that it was our warriors who started the rumor. Is this true?” I asked straight to the point without mincing words.Their eyes widened as I caught them off guard. “N…no, Lady Adira. Actually, we heard the story too. The only part we contributed to was that you go for a run occasionally, and that's the only time you leave the pack. I don't know how the story suddenly changed,” one of them replied.I nodded. “Thank you.” I turned a
ADIRA'S POV“What is it that you wish to speak of?” Ryder asked.“My son is one of the scouts that was sent down south to patrol the area, and yesterday while speaking to him, he told me that rogues have settled close. Apparently, they come and go occasionally,” Elder Theo said and paused.“Well, get to the point, Elder Theo,” Ryder said impatiently.“Ohh, sorry for the delay; I am getting somewhere. Were you aware of this?” the elder asked.“Yes, of course I was aware; I am the alpha of this pack. I was informed of this. Is there a reason you brought this up in this meeting?” Ryder asked, voice clipped. Now I was intrigued too. Ryder had mentioned those rogues some time back and how there might be spies in the pack.“Yes. I have two things to say about this. First is a question directly to you. If there is something this serious happening, why didn't you inform us?” Elder Theo asked.Ryder's brows arched. “Are you insinuating that I report to you?” Ryder growled lowly.Elder Theo imm
ADIRA'S POV“What do I do? We are about to be tied down to this life again. We have not even found any clues about our death in our past life,” I asked my wolf.“We may be about to be tied down, but certainly we are not the person we were before. Make the rules, drive the bargain, and make sure we do not fall into misery a second time,” my wolf replied.I turned around and walked over to the end of the office. I leaned on the wall and weighed my options.“Why is Lumina at the center of everything? In my past life, at the moment of our death, I had begged them to let Lumina live, but they had refused,” I thought to myself. Now again she was almost kidnapped. Is she the target, or am I the target? Or are we both the target?Does staying in this pack protect her, or will leaving protect her? Just like in past lives, the men who had caused us harm came from outside. So many thoughts ran through my mind. I could not figure out what to do.Mum’s face suddenly filtered into my mind, her word
