Chapter 8

Author: Perfect Timing
Ned grew agitated. "Mary, she's my wife!"

"Your wife? Don't make me laugh. You two never even registered your marriage. Who recognizes her as your wife?"

I said the very same words I said to Robbie.

He fell silent for a moment, unwilling to give up. His voice turned pleading. "Mary, just tell me! Don't you know how much Rachel loves me?"

I hadn't intended to waste another word on him, but at that, I stopped in my tracks.

"Loves you? You?"

My eyes swept him from head to toe, filled with nothing but contempt and ridicule.

"You really are full of yourself, just like your brother. What makes you two so sure our feelings would never change? What exactly makes either of you worth it?"

"Didn't we already say it before? Trash like you two aren't worth fighting over. Scarlett can have you."

Ned froze, unable to accept the reality that Rachel had never loved him. Yet even then, he instinctively tried to defend Scarlett.

"No, it's not what you think. This has nothing to do with Scarlett

Robbie forced the words out. "So the ones who saved us back then… it wasn't Scarlett at all. It was you and Rachel, wasn't it?"I gave a careless nod. "What now? You planning to repay me?"He lowered his head slightly, guilt etched across his face."I know now how terribly wrong I was. Mary, I'm sorry. If I'd known the truth, I never would've treated you that way. You're the one who saved my life. Will you marry me?"He dropped to one knee, holding out a glittering diamond ring. Not far away, Ned was baring his heart to Rachel as well. But what was their so-called sincerity worth? They had us once and never cherished us. Now that we were gone, they wallowed in regret. That wasn't love. That was pathetic.Rachel and I exchanged a look, equally disgusted."Weren't you humiliated enough last time?" I sneered. "Robbie, can't you see? I don't love you. You disgust me."Rachel's voice cut just as sharply. "Forget it. The day you made your choice, the door closed forever. There's n

Even knowing full well how shameless Robbie was, I couldn't help but applaud his audacity."Wow," I sneered, clapping slowly. "You want me to take care of the very woman who almost stole my spot at university? Robbie, you really are something else."I hadn't lowered my voice. Students passing by caught every word, and their condemning, disgusted stares pierced straight through him. His face flushed with humiliation—he looked as if he wanted the ground to swallow him whole."Family shame shouldn't be paraded in public. What are you doing?" he hissed, grabbing my arm.I jerked free. "Family shame? When you wanted to marry me, wasn't it because you were scheming to steal my admission letter? Back then, you didn't seem to care we were 'family.' Now suddenly it's shameful? Good thing we never registered that marriage. What bad luck that would've been."I scrubbed at the spot he'd touched with my handkerchief, the gesture as obvious as my contempt. But instead of losing his temper, Rob

Rachel and I parted ways at the train station.I headed north to Maturin City, determined to begin my university life. Rachel, with her usual boldness, decided to travel south and see the world for herself. Before we separated, Rachel shoved bills into my hand."Take it. University isn't cheap, and your parents aren't about to give you a cent for living expenses. Think of it as a loan. When you've made something of yourself, you can pay me back."My eyes burned. I knew she said it that way so I wouldn't feel the weight of her generosity. She was striking out on her own too; how could she possibly have money to spare? Yet I didn't refuse. I tucked the bills solemnly into my pocket, treating it like treasure. Before boarding, we hugged fiercely."You'll always be my best friend, Rachel.""And you mine, Mary."No, not just friends. We were comrades-in-arms—the only ones who knew each other's secrets, the only ones who understood the crushing burdens we carried from our past liv

The Stark brothers lingered outside their home, rooted at the doorway far longer than usual.A door that normally yielded with the lightest push now seemed unbearably heavy.Ned sighed. "Robbie… do you think we've gone too far?"True, there had never been much real affection between them and Mary or Rachel, but they had married them. For better or worse, they were bound for a lifetime.A flicker of guilt crossed Robbie's face. Yet when he recalled the look of pure joy on Scarlett's face as she received their gifts, the guilt faded. In its place rose a conviction—it had been worth it.After all, when they were boys, Scarlett had saved both his and Ned's lives without asking anything in return. She was kind and selfless. She deserved the very best the world had to offer."Don't overthink it. At worst, we'll just make it up to them. Mary and Rachel care for us deeply. They'll come around."His gaze dropped to the fish he carried in one hand. When Mary came back with spinach, he tho

  • Reborn with My Bestie   Chapter 4

In my previous life, it was around this time that my admission letter should have arrived. And it was also around now that Ned first brought up the idea of needing money to buy a house. These past few days, Rachel and I had been playing our roles well—obedient, compliant, just like before, acting as if we couldn't live without the Stark brothers. So when I offered to go out and buy groceries, they didn't suspect a thing. Before I left, Robbie smiled, his eyes curved in that gentle arc he was so good at faking."Mary, thank you for your hard work. Buy some spinach while you're out. I remember it's your favorite."Spinach? Not anymore.Because Scarlett hated spinach, our household hadn't seen a single leaf of it in thirty or forty years in the previous life. Even if I had once loved it, I no longer recognized the taste.I nodded calmly, but instead of heading to the market, I took a turn and made straight for the school.Admission letters were always delivered there in bulk.
